The Index 2.0: Mmirg's Index of Excellent Scaper Threads

Due to the number of excellent threads that I have to search for again and again, I decided to make an index of threads I consider excellent or use often. (I put it in my sig to make it always easily available to anyone--thanks to Kroc for the inspirational example; everyone is welcome to include this thread in their sigs as well--availability of information is my goal).

I believe it is now time to reconceive the Index, this time using spoilers and directional entries to help make searching much easier. The Index has grown a lot, but it is still not as copious as I’d like. Please suggest other threads that I can and should include in the new Index 2.0. (The Index 2.0 is still rough--it has been in process for months and I realized that it would be that way for months yet, if I didn't just post it and get it working here. All comments, notices about errors, etc. are welcome.)

Praise for the original Index (I hope the Index 2.0 will be similarly helpful :) ) -

If I were new to this site and wanted to plunge, full force, into the heart of the very best of HeroScapism; the first post in this thread would be the best reading list possible at the moment. - Revdyer

 - Cavalier

Whether unfamiliar or versed in the game, The Index is requisite lore for any and every 'Scaper. - Soul Shackle

Again, I welcome suggestions for any significant threads that I may have missed—I know that I have missed a lot in recent months; I've been busy. I also welcome suggestions for “see also/other” entries. I know that we don’t all search the same way, so if you didn’t find something where you expected it to be; let me know, so I can put a “see XXX” statement where you (and likely others) expect the information to be found.

Note: Dark Red threads are ones I consider to be indexes/hubs themselves (they contain many links to further threads on a given topic)

*This is a continual work in progress*

Good work as always 1Mmirg.

May I suggest my Playgrounds of Valhalla thread for possible inclusion under "maps"?

Re: The Index 2.0: Mmirg's Index of Excellent Scaper Threads

Thanks, ollie--and to everyone else who has PM'd me suggestions as well. I believe I have added in everything suggested.

In several cases the threads were already here, so I added a "see also" indicator or tried to make things otherwise easier to find. Please continue to let me know about new threads to add and new terms to use to help make finding excellent threads easier. Thanks!!

Re: The Index 2.0: Mmirg's Index of Excellent Scaper Threads

Added several more threads and other resources, including things like AliasQTip's Heroscape Site, which I feel silly for never knowing existed. The more I look around, the more I realize how many excellent threads and resources there are for Scapers.

Hope this thread is proving useful for many. Feel free to include it in your sig, so it is always an easy click away.

If you're ever looking for a great thread and find it--PM me or post it here and we'll see about adding it, so that you won't be digging for it again.

Well I am now linking to your index in my signature. Saves time that way.

Added links to dok's work on mapmaking, lefton4ya's single PDF compilation of all current official maps/scenarios, and several other threads (as well as some new pointers to other sections).

PM me if there is something you use often that isn't included in the Index. Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions so far.

Forgive me if I missed it, but is there a section for Marvel threads like the BoM?

1Mmirg May 20th, 2010 03:51 PM

Re: The Index 2.0: Mmirg's Index of Excellent Scaper Threads

I've got a section for C3G under customs and I believe the BoM are under the Maps section, but, yes, I have to admit that Marvel is a weakness of mine--I don't play it much or know it as well. I'll work on getting Marvel better representation and visibility (working now, will get to it soon). (Suggestions for threads are welcome.)

Thanks for the idea, rednax; I appreciate it.

Alright, I went ahead and took a shot at a Marvel section. Hope it is helpful and I welcome PMs on other suggested threads. Thanks, again, rednax, for the suggestion.

Added the new FAQ, to both Rules and to Recommended Threads at the top of the page. Sorry for the triple post, but I think it's important all players know the new FAQ is out. (Blog entry.)

Re: The Index 2.0: Mmirg's Index of Excellent Scaper Threads

With the addition of How do I effectively use multiple Common Squads? to The Index I'm up to 5 threads here. 8)

I think that The Index would be easier to look through if each heading got it's own spoiler block, instead of blocking them alphabetically. Right now, at a glance, the OP looks like it has all the threads organized by title, instead of topic, which is a bit daunting when trying to quickly look for something. Additionally, it's difficult to scan through the topics with them hidden.

Also, why hasn't this thread been stickied?

Thanks for the ideas. I'm always looking for ways to make the Index more useful.

I didn't do separate spoilers for each topic b/c I fear the post would simply get too huge and unwieldy (as the first Index did, imo). I will add a note, though that lets people know that the list is by topic not title (didn't even think about how confusing that could be for a reader).

And I will spread out the alphabetical sections as the Index keeps growing, so that no spoiler section gets too large.

Tell me what you think of the changes and thanks to everyone who keeps helping to work on this (not so) little project with me. Much appreciated!

I just read what you wrote in the Common Units thread about expanding on sub-headings and cross-referencing, so I came over here to add a "Nevermind, that'll make it HUGE!" to my post, but you beat me here.

I think that a note explaining the organization will work well, but to help skim through the topics it might be useful to bullet-point the threads listed under each topic. That way the topic titles will jut out to the left and be a little less buried between the thread titles (since they're all bolded, colored and underlined they tend to overwhelm everything else). Plus that's less than a tenth of the work of spoiler-blocking everything, which, as a fellow compiler of lists, I can definitely appreciate.

Two topics that seem endlessly discussed that need their own heading in your list are...

1. Taelord: Why does he Cost so much?
2. Pirates in Scape.

I have seen so many posts about these topics Taelord and Pirates must be the most Non-searched Thread topic.

In all seriousness this is an awsome resorce, Everyone needs to check this out.

Thanks, wriggz. :)

I'm afraid I haven't found an "excellent" thread that deals with either of those topics--any suggestions? ;)

I'm just glad you made the Library. It is the best one-stop place for the best of the best in theoryscape and most of what really excites and drives Scapers. Your Library made me feel better about taking a bit more comprehensive and broader approach to my own Index. I felt like a truly excellent (and shorter) highlights thread was now available. Love what you did!

Thanks for all your work on your project!

Re: The Index 2.0: Mmirg's Index of Excellent Scaper Threads

I look at the Two threads as complemtary as well, I can't believe I haven't created a link here (consider it done).

I think of your list as THE DEFINITIVE LIST of Heroscapers. If people want to know about Building a Winning Army (or just want a fun read) they should check out my list. If people want to know about: Making maps, making customs, fourm rules, how to search, what to buy, how to store, or anything else scape This is the place.

I've added the newest FAQ and xraine's excellent work with the official scenarios (thought I'd already done that--you guys have to point out obvious errors like that), as well as the new Warzones of Valhalla.

Shameless Self Promotion:
Links to all Heroscape Websites
At least you could put something under W-X-Y-Z now - Websites!

Also note, I added the heroscape links you had under "Purchasing Scape" to my list so that helped - you can reciprocate by adding links from my more complete list of store links and add to the "Purchasing Scape" if you want too.

If you're looking for topics that keep coming up again and again and again and have great responses out there somewhere (couldn't think of where at the moment), you might try something on boats in Heroscape.
Also, great stuff here! I always enjoy reading your threads. :-)

Added several new items--thanks dok for some great suggestions and for the nudge--including the SoV, more draft options, ollie's rolling rumble, Heroscape: Legacy, etc.

There is a lot more. I haven't added C3V, since I'm not yet sure where to point people to.

As always, I'm open to suggestions. Thanks for your help on making this Index the most useful it can be!

So sad. WGHQ was perhaps the most actively supportive site at one point. They were excellent to work with. (I still have one of their t-shirts.) But, you are right, they are out of Scape. :(

You might wanna take off the links to heroscape.com, such as official scenarios and thorgrim's journal. However, my scenario compilation, and the heroscape compenduim fill those voids.

My "links to all heroscape websites and online stores" has a lot more weblinks you could copy to this index if you so desired, in place of WGHQ.
