Happy belated New Year, everyone! It's been a while since the last project snapshot and we've seen an entirely new Pod formed in that time, so I think that it's a good time to review the status of the project as a whole.
--- Honored Soul-Guides - TestingPOD 0 UNITS: This design lets you bring back your destroyed small/medium Unique Heroes for one last round. Also has Stealth Flying. They're currently our cheapest unit. Statline: 2 Figures, 5 Move, 1 Range, 2 Attack, 5 Defense, 50 points Key Features: Mid-cost, Synergy with Unique Medium Heroes, Stealth Flying Ozuul - Testing Ozuul is focused on pulling in figures two spaces away and then hitting everything adjacent with a heavy Special Attack. He's pretty close to completion; we mostly need additional tests to see if a bump to 6 move is warranted or if he's already punching at his current cost. He's the only unit in the ~200 point range currently, and is the "big bad" of the set. Statline: 8 Life, 5 Move, 1 Range, 6 Attack, 4 Defense, 190 points Key Features: High cost, Multi-targeting SA, Pull in Figures Tetsuo Tyrell - Testing He's a high-risk, high-reward character with a scaling chance to steal turns with opposing heroes based on his current wounds. He can self-inflict a wound to increase his attack to 5 dice at range and boost his chances. He mostly counters Unique Heroes, which we currently have 8 of. He is in need of additional testing to show that he is both satisfying to play and not stealing the Mind Flayer Mastermind's thunder. Statline: 6 Life, 5 Move, 5 Range, 3 Attack, 2 Defense, 110 points Key Features: D20, controls Unique Heroes, and ranged offense Velnesh Alphas - Testing They're focused on teleporting and mobility. Most feedback has been positive on their simple but thematic direction. They're geared towards a tricky/offensive playstyle currently. We need just a couple of more tests here to make sure that 90 points is good, but they're very close to completion. Statline: 3 Figures, 4 Move (+2 space teleport), 1 Range, 4 Attack, 4 Defense, 90 Points Key Features: Mobility, Solid Stats POD 1 UNITS: Velkhor - TestingHe's a demon with a negative defense aura to nearby opponents; it penalizes figures with a higher defense more. When killed, he has a Spirit effect to permanently reduce 2 from the defense of a Unique Army Card. He also has Flying. There is some concern over whether his aura and spirit powers should match mechanically, along with his price and utility within the Master Set. This is the main "cheerleader" unit in the set currently. Statline: 5 Life, 6 Move, 1 Range, 3 Attack, 3 Defense, ~110 Points Key Features: Debuff Cheerleader, Flying, Wolves/Acolytes bonding Dienekes - Testing Combat Challenge forces engaged opponents to target Dienekes. He can also pull in figures that end their movement within 3 spaces of him on a lucky roll. He's the only "defender" type of unit currently. Initial testing shows concerns that he might be too hard to play optimally and dependent on having flat terrain. Statline: 6 Life, 5 Move, 1 Range, 3 Attack, 4 Defense, 90 Points Key Features: D20, Defender, Pull in Figures Pyria - Testing Pyria has a dual-Fireline Special Attack that can target two lines of 3 spaces. She also has a solid ranged normal attack. She's dedicated to dealing damage currently. She could still use additional testing of course, but she's very close to completion. Statline: 6 Life, 5 Move, 7 Range, 3 Attack, 2 Defense, 120 Points Key Features: Multi-targeting SA and ranged offense Ukushia Pride - Editing This is a hunting squad with a high offensive punch and (potentially) solid defense. They're marked by a high movement and an attack bonus when staying engaged--they're also our only double-spaced squad. Statline: 3 Figures, 7 Move, 1 Range, 3 Attack (+2 conditionally), 4 Defense, 90 points Key Features: High move and attack, clumping together, Lava Resistance POD 2 UNITS: Durnipia - Public FeedbackThis is our healer, themed around an official character from several bios. She's still in Public Feedback officially, though most people seem to be happy with the mechanical design. There has been some significant debate over whether she should be Durnipia or a new character following another general such as Aquilla. We can sort this out as more units are defined and there's a better idea of the spread between general units. She should be ready for Editing and Testing fairly soon. Statline: 5 Life, 5 Move, 1 Range, 3 Attack, 3 Defense, 80 Points Key Features: D20, Healing, Water/Terrain powers Katryn Vade - Public Feedback She's an Icarian Champion themed around Zelrig. She has his trademark anti-squad explosion, but at 1 range, along with optional Huge immunities and a power that rewards being positioned near wounded friendly heroes. She's in Public Feedback right now, with concern directed towards the necessity of all three powers. Statline: 5 Life, 5 Move, 1 Range, 5 Attack, 3 Defense, 140 Points Key Features: Multi-targeting SA, anti-squad, large/huge immunities Alabaster Sentinels - Public Feedback This is another simple squad with good stats. They conditionally get extra defense dice and can nearly double their move if they move in a straight line. They're still in Public Feedback, but most comments have been positive and they can probably move on to Editing soon. Statline: 3 Figures, 4 Move (+3 conditionally), 1 Range, 3 Attack, 4 Defense (+2 conditionally), 60 Points Key Features: Mid-cost, solid defense, conditionally fast Vlad III - Design This one is still seeing some changes, but it looks like the current direction is a Warlord with an adjacency attack boost and a way to bypass defense. I didn't see a general from skimming the thread, so I'm assuming Utgar for now. Shout at me if I'm wrong. --- Glyph of Healing - TestingGLYPHS: Removes one wound from each friendly hero. Temporary Glyph. Still needs more tests and scenarios. Glyph of Knowledge - Testing Before rolling for initiative, you can look at a random Order Marker from each opponent. Permanent Glyph. Still needs more tests and scenarios. Glyph of Recall - Testing Revives a previously destroyed squad figure. Temporary Glyph. Still needs more tests and scenarios. There is also ongoing discussion about designing the other glyphs for our box so that all glyphs provide unique options for existing players (and potentially synergize better with our units). These glyphs are pretty much all bottlenecked at Testing right now, but they would greatly benefit from us starting some actual maps and scenarios that rely on them. TERRAIN/SCENARIOS: The consensus is in favor of setting AotV in the Sea of Sand, but few other details about the surrounding story have been set right now. The Pillars of Hár Destructible Objects are pretty solid at this point: they are essentially risky towers for ranged figures that can be destroyed. Once they make it through Editing, we'll be in good shape to start designing some scenarios! --- We've hit a bit of a bottleneck with the project, as these statistics should show:SUMMARY: Threads in Design: 1 Threads in Public Feedback: 3 Threads in Editing: 2 Threads in Testing: 10 Hopefully we can increase our testing output to start finishing off some of these designs and get them ready for testing compatibility together. The units that are the nearest to completion in my opinion are Ozuul, the Velnesh Alphas, and Pyria. Tests focusing on these units are the most useful right now as a result, and they shouldn't need much more testing at this point anyway. We noticeably only have two "mid-priced" units that are under the ~100 point range, and one of them is based on maximizing the value out of more expensive heroes. The other one is a solid melee squad. This is something to keep in mind as future units enter Design. The distribution of units amongst the generals is below. It's a fairly balanced spread currently, especially when considering that future Pods are likely to include an Ullar and Aquilla unit. =3, =3, =2, =2, =2 That's all for now. Time for an exciting update here!
Our new Maps & Scenarios subforum is live! Please feel free to jump over there and weigh in on the discussion for how we should define our process for map creation. The aim here is twofold: we want players to be able to play games sooner rather than later with AotV units on maps without being forced to build custom ones, and we want to provide a slightly faster creation process so that the community can stay engaged. The AotV Project Leads would like to welcome
@Captain Stupendous
to the team as a new Project Lead! With the recent departures of many of the original PLs, we are looking to keep things moving, and we'd like to have more than just four active Project Leads to maintain a high level of collaboration.
Captain Stupendous has been a consistent supporter of AotV for a long time now, and he will be stepping in to cover as the second Pod Leader for Pod 2 so that we can finish out those units. We're looking forward to his contributions and help! Proud Member of Platyfly!
