Utah Monthlies 2017

[The Dewk]

UTAH MONTHLY May 2017

Location: Fongo Bongo Games (1751 W 12600 S, Riverton)

When: May 27th, 11 AM

Cost: $5 (100% of entries will go to prize support! And donating prizes is always quite welcome as well, of course.)

Format: WANDERING MONSTERS
Each map will have at least one neutral unit ("the wandering monster") located somewhere on the terrain. After round one, both players may place Order Markers on a Wandering Monster's Army Card. When an Order Marker is revealed for a Wandering Monster, that player controls that figure for the duration of its turn. After that turn, the figure becomes Neutral and is not controlled by either player. While the figure is Neutral, all players treat it as an opponent's figure. A Neutral figure cannot attempt to pick up or activate any Treasure Glyphs, but like all figures, it can stand on a Treasure Glyph. And remember, if time is called, and you need to determine points killed, monsters add to that total!


- 500 point armies
- 24 figure limit (we don't discriminate against Dumutef Guards)
- At least one 50+ point unique Hero required
- SoV & C3V allowed, official Marvel allowed.
- Glyphs: Initiative+8, Defense +1, D20 +1, Move +2, Common +1, Unique +1 (we'll be extra careful about stray Glyph's of Astrid floating around this time)
- Four 50 minute rounds
- Keep track of how many wandering monsters you kill, as The Monster Slayer will get a cool prize

Would love to offer up some of my maps for consideration for this next tournament. I just updated my map thread...so all my work is there, and I think there are a few gems among the rough cut stone.

I will for sure be going through your maps @Sir Heroscape ! If you have any specific maps you would like considered then you can shoot me a PM with them. In fact, if anyone has maps they would like to play or suggest shoot me a PM with them. We like to announce maps a couple weeks in advance so within the next week and a half would be prime because that's when I will be thinking of maps and playing on new ones. That's not an absolute guarantee we'll use it as I do have a couple maps in mind as well, but I can at least consider it and put it on the list for future events.

Well, it's been about a week, which seems to be about the time I tend to finish up my battle report, so here we go.

I’ll keep the origin story quick this time. First off, True couldn’t make it, but if he had, he was going to run:

Domo konnichiwa, honorable ‘Scapers. My thanks to you for joining me, ShogunBullfrog, on my journey through this April tournament. Although my Ashigaru soldiers are weak individually, they have coordination and board presence unmatched by most armies. Even the Kozuke Samurai are often overlooked for their weakness in comparison to other samurai, such as the honorable Kaemon Awa, but in the past they have served me well so I have allowed them to join me on this crusade. Together, we may not be the strongest band, or the highest ranked to win, but we shall fight with honor.

What’s that? We have 10 points remaining? Well then, why don’t we let the honorably dishonorable Isamu join our ranks. What what? We have too many people? Well then, let’s drop the ninja. Hey, Isamu-san, why don’t you make yourself useful and scout the enemy?

Game 1

Isamu-san, what have you to say about our first opponent? Ah, so it is the honorable Sir Heroscape’s cousin, Saints_Wrath, is it? Yes, I know this man well. He is the one who, with Scaperedude, destroyed my alter ego BiggaBullfrog’s army last month. Yes, he is a worthy opponent. And I see he brought with him an army of those blue-and-white metal men. Let us see how those metal carapaces hold up.

Saa, rook arive men! Those robots outrange us, so we shall have to play a more aggressive game here. Now quickly, Harquebus, take the nearest high ground you can. Yari, start moving forward. All together; if we string out the snipers will only pick us off.

It seems the robots are trying to go towards the hill on our left. Saa, then let’s take the glyph on the right. It’s the movement glyph! Yoshi! This shall give us a great edge in taking the main hills before the metal men are able to. Let’s also take the other glyph. Now defense is boosted as well! These two boosts are huge for us! Now secure that hill on the left before those short robots can get a foothold. And shoot the big one!

Kuso! The bullets aren’t working on the big one. But the small ones are being repulsed easily enough. I sense that is ironic somehow…

Anyway, since we can’t hurt the big one with bullets, we shall change tactics. Continue to shoot the small ones as they advance! If we can keep them away, the snipers will have a harder time hitting us. Yari, gather together on that hill! Yes, I know they keep shooting you off. But they only have so many attacks at a time and our numbers are greater so soon enough we’ll have enough of you there to rush them!

There’s a straggler there! And one there! Pick them off! Saa, there are enough of you Yari on the hill now, and we have the board! Now charge that robot! Charge him with your sticks and perform that secret special attack:

And the big robot man is destroyed! Yoshi! Saa, let’s run and finish off the others before they can recuperate. Yes, one by one they fall! And now we see Saints_Wrath conceding with one sniper remaining on the field. Well done men. We have brought honor to our names.

Where is that ninja? He is supposed to have news of our next opponent. When I see that son of a 忍者 I will — Wait, is that the honorable Sir Heroscape’s wife: Lady Heroscape? Holy schnikes ! It is such an honor to meet you Lady Heroscape! I am rike your biggest fan! May I get your autograph? Yes, please sign my tournament sheet! Oh thank you so much! Oh what’s that? We are up next as opponents?

Well then, it is with honor that we shall duel.

There you are, Isamu-kun! Yes, I know our next opponent is Lady Heroscape, I already got her signature. What’s that? Her army is comprised of British, Italian, and American forces? And she even has one of our samurai? How strange…

Alright men, the battle has started! It seems that those redcoats are the first to come against us. But as we have the initiative, we can take the high ground before they do. Harquebus, shoot them down before they get close! If we shoot them from a distance their defenses are low enough that we can power through them quickly. It is when they get close to us and survive our attacks that we need fear. But if we shoot them first — ah, yes, just like that! Wow, they fall quickly. What’s that? Lady Heroscape is the self-proclaimed Queen of Blanking? Oh, I’m sure it’s not that bad. Just bad luck. For… the entire first round. It’s difficult for Marcus to boost people when none of them survived our attacks. Poor guy.

Saa, we have the initiative again! Men, take those glyphs! The extra movement and attack will be instrumental to our success! Yes, her troops can easily take us off of them, but when we can take a turn with Yari first to then boost our Harquebus, we need not worry! I mean, yes, you’re dying, but at 10 points a piece that’s kind of what you’re made to… Nevermind! For honor!

Ha! We are sweeping those redcoats from before us! Hey you Harquebus! Yes you! Shoot someone! The redcoats are all out of range now? Then shoot that Roman. He’ll probably block it - he’s in shadow and all - but it’s worth a shot. Ha! English pun!

Oh… And that was a good shot… And bad defense… Poor Roman is half dead after one attack… But, that’s just how the dice roll sometimes!

Now we must get creative. Those rocks and ruins are starting to seriously impede my sight lines. Take the flanks as much as possible and continue the advance! Our numbers are dwindling, but we shall press our advantage! And… They will all die. More blanks, huh? Well… Maybe that self-proclaimed title isn’t far off…

Rook arive! The samurai is coming to fight now. Dishonorable of you Kaemon! Turning on your own nation! We shall destroy you and all that you stand for! Oh, wow, you can do some damage. But nevertheless, we shall shoot you! And… It shall be much easier when you blank as well. Thanks, I guess. For helping your kin.

Saa, it is cleanup from here. The cowboy won’t last long. And now there is only one redcoat remaining. We shall simply take him out and — Hey! You actually got someone! What happened to that blanking stuff? Fine, charge him! Oh… And he actually defended. And got another one of my men! You stop that! It’s only a matter of time until…

Yeah, a blank.

Saa, well done men! We have triumphed our first two rounds when we thought we wouldn’t have much chance of success! And isn’t it funny how our first two opponent’s were both kin of the honorable Sir Heroscape? I mean, how funny would it be if our next opponent ended up being… What was that, Isamu?

Ah. It seems he is coming for blood.

Quickly, take those hills! Those skeletons may be able to move large groups and return from the dead, but their slow move and our ranged weapons should give us an edge if we are careful! Yari, form up in front! Yes, I know you’ll probably die there, but at 10 points a piece that’s what you — Nevermind!

The tension on the field is strong. Sir Heroscape is being very careful, and so must I. A wrong move on either of our parts - a bad opening - will surely decide the battle. We are doing well at holding our ground, but our numbers are being whittled. And not all of those skeletons are being reanimated, but enough are that we cannot ignore this issue. Something must be done about the vampire. But where is the opening we need? Continue rolling forward. Hold the ground, and pick off what skeletons you can. Yari, move closer. We need to be prepared to rush them.

What? The Marro are coming? I did not expect that! And they are picking off some of our forward Yari. Return fire! No good! And they’re attacking again! But… All of our Harquebus survived the attacks.

Seize the initiative! It is time! Yari, take the glyphs! Run forward with extra movement and engage the Marro! Now, Harquebus, shoot those alien creatures! One by one and… They have fallen! All of the Marro gone! Sir Heroscape has lost a full round! And it is here that he is conceding the game. Well fought, honorable Sir Heroscape, Knight of the Hexes. It seems that when you’re lucky enough, rusty swords and plasma guns cannot defeat our paper mache armor.

Here we are men. We have done far better than could have been expected of us, but it seems fate has smiled upon us. We look forward to the next battle with honor, for it is with the honorable The Dewk that we shall clash. That Isamu-yaro has briefed me on the composition of The Dewk’s army, and right now only one thought passes through my in the form of a haiku:

Rats have no honor
And really tie up my men
Should have brought Awa

Saa, everyone! Rook arive, for this is it! Claim the hills, quickly! Shimatta! The Rats are already climbing all over them. And they have taken the glyphs of movement and defense! Shoot that rat! Wait, bad idea, now there are more. Be careful, we cannot afford to have too many up here.

The big fire robots are coming! We must prepare our positions! Quickly, you Yari! Surround that Rat on the move glyph! It’s time for:

It worked! I would rate that a six skull attack! Now you! Shoot that rat on the defense glyph! They have left an opening, and no rat can claim it as they scatter. Success! But our troops are getting tied up.

Seize the initiative! Take the glyph of defense! It is more important for us to deny it to the enemy than to hold it for ourselves. Those big robots can burn through us easily enough, and they are coming to do so! Harquebus, shoot them down! Our first priority is to destroy those robots before they can be established on height! Yes! Yes! Their systems are failing! Soon they shall fall. But they’re retaliating, and our men are falling quickly as well. Keep attacking. And one of those fire mechs has fallen!

We have the right-side hill! But the left-side hill still has two big robots. Not to mention those rats still sneaking around. But never mind them, destroy the mechs! And watch out for the flamethrower — ah, too late. Well now we know! You, Yari! The mech is close! You know what to do!

Yes! Another has fallen! And with some patience… Yes, the other has as well! Things are going well. But continue to ignore the rats — they will only keep us from focusing on the more important troops about to assault us…

This is getting difficult. Again these rocks and ruins are blocking my sight, and I can’t tell you all what to do if I can’t see at least your spear or gun. But we shall have to sacrifice some of that for the purpose of getting better attacks on those Marro-robot-thingies. But they defend well, and their attacks are strong. Our men are falling quickly! Yoshi! Some of those robos are falling, but at great cost. Aha, one has exploded! But it seems most are attacking multiple times. Continue to try to hold ground! Or give it up. That works. Makes sense, you only have paper mache armor…

The numbers of the remaining Marro-bots are low, but so are those of our Ashigaru. Saa, it is time! Kozuke-tachi, go! Rush that hill! The Marro-bots are getting too good of a position, cut them down! Use your great speed to catch them quickly!

Or die before you can touch them. As they say in America, that’s cool too.

It is up to you, remaining Ashigaru! Destroy them! Yes, one down! And another! We only have two Ashigaru, but he only has one Marro-bot. But… Oh no! It is rushing me! You dare fire at me, ShogunBullfrog? I shall show you the meaning of pain! Ow! Yes! Pain! Right here! In my side. Not dead yet. But yes, this is pain.

Aha! But now you exploded, you silly Marro-bot. You have been bested! But there are still some rats on the board, and The Dewk shows no sign of mercy. We can kill them! You, last Harquebus! Shoot them! Yes, hunt them down! Another! Ha, they are falling. One left! And… You’re dead. Yes, that’s right. Rats love to eat paper mache…

Saa, it is now you and me, little rat. Ha, I see your trick. I will not engage you there where you can take the high ground. I realize I am close to death. Saa, katakekoi! Ha, your metal teeth are nothing against my real armor. Now, take my special attack:

My great thanks to all who participated in this great event! I had a great time, and hope to meet you all again on the field of battle. Ah, yes, it seems I have begun a family war with Sir Heroscape. But Scaperedude says he and his brother shall join with me, so I have no need to fear! Although, maybe I should also just hide ShogunBullfrog away for a little while.

大変でござる。あの石や壁がまた邪魔になって、やりや銃が見えないと武士たちの明治ができない。だが、あのマロロボやろらに強い攻撃をするため、少し の犠牲をしないといけない。しても、あいつらの防衛や攻撃も強いでござる。足軽たちは早く亡くなってるの！よし！ロボも倒してる！ハハ、一つが爆発し た！けれど、やっはり多いの方が何回もアッタックしてるみたい。諦めるな！それとも諦めて。それも大丈夫でござる。鎧が弱いからとうぜん でござる。

I take it that @BiggaBullfrog took home the 1st prize with Kato no less. Well done sir. I like using him just to swarm the board with peasant fighters. But never had the coconuts to run him in a tournament. Sounds fun. I'm going to try to make the time to come down to one of you guys monthlies, they look great.

Poking my head in here just so say I browsed your last couple tournaments and results and I like your monthly tournaments. Hope to maybe see some of you soon at Origins or Gencon (or if I ever vacation again in Utah), but if not, nice to see you are still going on as you all, Louisville, and NE Ohio are the only ones doing monthly events right now (luckily I am in driving distance of the other two monthly events).

@TREX you're right, Kato carried me to 1st. I honestly wasn't expecting it, but it turns out that the Japanese army is good when the meta is lacking in a lot of the figures that are best against it (Rat-podges, Raelin-podges, really strong range - The Dewk's 2 squads of Rats were the closest I came to fighting one of those). I also got pretty lucky with the maps I played on. I totally recommend Kato for games, but be prepared: your neck will hurt with all the line of sight checking! Hope you can make it down to game with us soon!

@lefton4ya I saw your thread for Origins and I really wish I lived in that half of the country for it! However I do know that Sir Heroscape is planning on making it to GenCon this year so you'll probably see him and a couple others there! And if you ever are in Utah we'd love to have you come game with us!
