’Scaper of the Month
Sir Heroscape
Author: Fi Skirata

Profile:

Who are you really?
My name is Ammon Doney. Originally from Vermont, but now residing in Idaho going to school.

How old are you?
24.

What is your occupation?
I work graveyard shifts (hence why most of my posts are in the middle of the night) for a security monitoring company, AvantGuard.

What other interests do you have?
A little bit of everything. I’m a drummer, I sing and play piano (and a little guitar); I also play sports (basketball, football, ultimate frisbee), and I’m fascinated by the medieval ages.

What’s another board game/RPG you enjoy and why?
Risk. The element of strategy is a huge thing for me. Just like Heroscape, in the end ... no matter how much strategy you put into it, it will be the dice that decide the winner.

Heroscape:

When and how did you get into Heroscape?
Back when Heroscape first came out, our cousins bought it. We played with them and loved it. My parents got it for us for Christmas and as a young kid I loved playing it with the family. We got the first 2 master sets and a bunch of expansions. Over the years, my family didn’t wanna play with me ... so it ended up getting packed away. When I came out to college, though, I started getting back into it (3 years ago) and, within the last year and a half, I’ve dived in with both feet, and I’m here to stay.

Earlier this year, you painted two sets of Volcarren Wasteland, with both coming out looking fantastic. Do you have any plans to do more repaints or terrain modifications in the future?
Without a doubt. My custom terrain projects, repaints, and modifications will never end. It is my hope to bring high quality products to the community that will inspire others ... because it wasn’t till I saw the masterpieces of other Heroscapers that I gained the confidence to do my own work. As for specifics, I’m currently working on my own variation of a spiked barricade and Guard Tower—and both are still in early development—-but definitely something for y’all to look forward to.

What is your “cheerleader” unit?
Marcus Decimus Gallus. He has great versitility in a number of builds that I like to play.

As mentioned by Brandonwiker when he nominated you, you also have been making videos of many of your matches. What made you decide to start creating these?
When I first started getting back into Heroscape, I watched all of the YouTube battle videos I could to learn from them. MrHscape, Legoboy and Captain Canuck and Brandon Wiker himself were all great resources to learn from. I enjoyed every minute and learned a lot of valuable things. When I finished all their videos, I realized ... now what? Realizing there were probably a lot of people in my same situation, I wanted to fill that void in the Heroscape community and provide weekly video Heroscape content that everyone can participate in and be a part of. Aside from Heroscapers.com, I hope my channel can become a hub for Heroscape where people can look forward each Saturday to seeing something new from Sir Heroscape. We’re going strong at 130 Subscribers and nearing 8000 views. I also do free giveaways for hitting landmarks, and I involve subs in my content. So, for all you reading this, yes: this is a shameless plug to come and join me on my channel—you won’t regret it!

Community:

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
The devotion. Never, and I mean NEVER, have I seen such devoted fans of an OOP game. It’s been 6 years since our beloved Heroscape was “canceled” and yet we haven’t missed a step or slacked in our stride. If anything, it’s only burned the fire hotter. It amazes me what has been freely given and sacrificed to make this game quite literally “The [greatest] Battle of all Time.” The content here by all our devoted members is enormous and beautiful, and I’m still in awe at what has been accomplished when I search the depths of this site. Extreme devotion is what I love about this community and it motivates me to give the same.

Describe your favorite Heroscape moment.
When I brought my then fiancée back home to meet the parents and we played Heroscape with her and all my friends and family (it was her first time). The map took up our entire living room floor: we had 7 players and it lasted 7 hours long! The time flew by and she didn’t skip a beat—she loved it ... especially since she won! It was then I knew I would marry her. To be honest, she’s really the one that has made it all possible for me to do what I do with Heroscape. I bow to you, Lady Heroscape.

Is there any member of Heroscapers.com you’d really like to play against?
There are so many ... haha! Of course Brandonwiker—my fellow YouTuber would be a fun matchup, but I’d also like to try my hand at Spider_Poison sometime (hopefully at GenCon). I hear he’s pretty boss ... and there’s no better way to learn than by playing the best.

Lie Detector:
  • I’ve caught a fish (Rainbow Trout) with my bare hands.
  • I don’t like anime.
  • I love cantaloupe.
  • During a game, I would never seek to obliterate, incinerate and completely destroy my opponent’s Raelin (RotV).

Last Week’s Truth:
  • I had an afro in college back in 2008.
  • I won the NY tennis state sectionals in high school.
  • I once got into a fist fight with my friend for stealing the girl I wanted to ask out.
  • My first car was a 1990 jaguar.

Three Fun Favorites:

Favorite Superhero:
Spider-Man ... always has been.

Favorite Song:
“Gabriel’s Oboe.”

Favorite Sport/Activity:
Football and basketball ... I’ll cross you up!

Closing:

What message do you have for the ’Scaper community?
Live on! Never let this die. I have hope tha one day the rights for our beloved game will be released from their prison at WotC and a more worthy hand will be entrusted with its growth. When that day comes, we’ll be anxiously waiting, and there will be no shortage of fans to bring it back alive!

Whom do you pick for the next ’Scaper of the Month?
TREX. He’s been a very active member on the site and has great custom content in both terrain and figures. He’s also centrally involved in the development of HoSS and has made many valuable contributions to the Heroscaper community.

Yeah, check em out. We're growing faster and faster...now we're at 179 Subs and 11,000+ views...which is significantly more than when this interview was given. I try to get the subs involved in what I do as well, and things are just going really well...would love to have heroscapers from this site supporting me.
