With Online Heroscape Season 35 wrapping up, it's probably a good time to start posting videos from it, right? We get to watch a game between @dok and @Crixus33 to start us off with a cool Soulborg vs Bug/Arachnid matchup. And joining in the discussion is master map designer and good friend @Flash_19 !! So join us as we discuss how much text is on Deathcommander's card, poke fun at @TrueMurray , and talk about Flash_19's new map that he said he'd post when we made the video weeks ago but I just checked and it wasn't there so what's up with that!?

Apologies for replying to a slightly old post, it has been awhile since I last logged in and I just saw the mention.

It was interesting to see someone commenting on my gameplay.

Figured I might as well provide some insight into what I was thinking when playing the game. Note I'm not a very good player, so my logic could be is probably flawed.

The main move I made that saw discussion was my choice to move Sujoah into engagement. Going into the game I wanted to keep the action at Wannok. I was, probably, overestimating the amount of damage it could do to my army. When I moved Sujoah in I felt I was losing board control there. Plus my screen protecting Estivara was a little tenuous and I didn't want to lose her because if she died my spiders lost significant attack power. I also felt I was playing too cautiously and wanted to play a bit more aggressively to deny Wannok and hopefully remove DCM3.

Anyway I think that's what was going through my mind. Sorry for a bit of a derail. Also thanks for making the video, it was fun to see play-by-play commentary on a game I was in.

Thanks for checking it out; I'm glad you liked it! I think you played very well that game! And thanks for sharing what was going through your mind during the game -- I always love to see the player's thoughts and the insights they bring. I think I didn't love the Sujoah play, but that's largely more due to a difference of personal preference/playstyle (you wanting to keep a more focused battle definitely makes sense in hindsight, especially with Estivara nearby to cheerlead), and you made it work for you! I remember being really impressed with your Spider play too! If only DCM3 had been a little less stubborn.

I totally did post that map by the way - It just took me a little bit. Your fault for telling me the cast wouldn't likely go up for a few weeks. So, I ended up tinkering with the map a little more. It was this one here (Flayed for those of you who have looked at my thread recently).

Ah, I thought it was a different map that I thought you were posting at the time. Well in that case, nice timing! You got that up just in time!

Funny story - the only attack that wounded the Deathcommander all tournament long was the first attack it faced. From a Fyorlag Spider. I played against the Deathcommander twice in later rounds and those were my two losses in the event (one in round 2, one in the elimination rounds). Both times I threw a very large number of dice at the Deathcommander and never scratched it. (I also played with my army two other times, but sat Deathcommander both of those times. My army went undefeated... I guess people underestimate the dogs?)

Once Deathcommander took that hit, though, I was more or less playing YOLO Deathcommander, figuring I can't count on it living so I may as well leverage the powers as much as I can. I couldn't sink multiple OMs on Deathcommander until Sujoah died, but I got a lot out of the OMs I did place there.

When paired with Deathstalkers, Deathcommander can present a real conundrum for melee armies - especially ones that rely on a hero is the big hitter. Once you commit to trying to take DC down, you make your opponent's army much stronger (due to HSCB bonding) until you actually succeed in taking DC down. But you never really know how long a 7 defense large figure will hold out. A similar dynamic played out in my elimination loss to @AgentWard where I was winning comfortably when I started trying to kill Deathcommander, but my attack dice went cold at the wrong time and he ended up dealing a ton of damage with Deathcommander and the last squad of Deathstalkers. (Against @infectedsloth Heavy Support didn't really come into play as the Deathstalkers mostly died first, but I just couldn't kill Deathcommander in endgame.)

Wow, that's a crazy good showing from your army, and especially Deathcommander! (Also small spoilers for an upcoming game... That's a good one too. )

That's what I was thinking, and having that power up front with so many spiders swarming meant a lot in the game. I am curious if you think you would have done the same if Sujoah had flown up the mountain to fight Deathstalkers earlier and then stayed away from Deathcommander engagement. If there's only one spider engaging Deathcommander at once I don't know if I risk OMs on him since killing the spider takes away bonding anyway, so it seems more consistent to just go Deathstalkers at that point (and I think that would have been my play to counter Deathcommander's efficiency).

Well, as long as Sujoah is alive I am probably only putting one OM a round on Dathcommander, either way. But more broadly speaking, if Sujoah wants to chill on the hill I probably don't send up a second dog. I leave her alone and attack other stuff. No sense in chasing her and giving up height if I can go directly for Estivara and spiders. In that sense, I think bringing Sujoah to bear early was probably a good call. Poor Crixus just couldn't get that second wound on Deathcommander quickly enough.
