Flash_19's Customs

Welcome to my custom's thread!

I've been wanting to try this for awhile now. I've got a handful of ideas for custom units, and would love to design more. However, I don't have a lot of experience with designing customs, so any feedback or help would be greatly appreciated.


This is first unit I'll post on this thread. The language still needs to be cleaned up for the text of the Special Abilities, but it should give a good idea of what I'm going for.

Name: Ghost Squadron
General: Vydar
Species: Human
Uniqueness: Unique Squad (4 figure squad)
Class: Agents
Personality: Precise
Size: Medium 5

Life: 1
Move: 6
Range: 6
Attack: 2
Defense: 3
Points: 100

Take Cover: When a member of Ghost Squadron is being targeted for an attack by a figure who is not adjacent, if part of its hit zone is not visible to the attacker, add 2 defense dice when defending against that attack.

Flash Grenade: Range 5. Lob 12. Before moving, you may attempt to throw a grenade at an enemy figure that is within 5 spaces of any stealth agent you control. Clear line of sight is not needed. Roll the d20. If you roll a 16 or higher, that figure and any figure adjacent to it loses 2 defense dice for the remainder of your turn. You may only attempt to use this ability once per round.

Phantom Walk: Ghost Squadron may move through enemy figures and are never attacked when leaving engagement.

I have a couple questions about these units that I will be looking for in playtesting, but would appreciate any theoryscaping you would like to offer.

1) Flash Grenade is probably the power I'm worried about the most. It could be very powerful when it works (depending of course on how enemy units are situated as well), so I tried to rein the power in with the d20 roll and once-per-round restriction. Maybe a d-20 roll of 11 or higher, but only a loss of 1 defense dice would be more appropriate. However, the 2 defense dice penalty seemed more in line with being hit by a flash grenade. Or maybe I could borrow from the AE's grenade special and make it a once-per-game guaranteed ability?

2) These guys could be very powerful against ranged units (depending on the map) - especially with a base stat of 3 defense dice, and the potential to add 2 more against ranged attacks if they have cover. Should defense be dropped to 2?

With the take cover ability it will be very easy for the agents to get 2 extra defense. I would be much more worried about this than the flash grenade. For 100 pts I would start by reducing it to 1 extra defense. All the ajent has to do is hide a foot behind a raised 1 hex or have a hand behind a tree to gain the bonus. There have been units made with this in mind. What I think of right away is the princess leia card from hoss. I think the take cover ability needs a little more attention then you have a decent little breach and clear force.

I would use the x2 card creator to mock up your cards, its pretty neat for classic customs. I use that and drop the pictures in after with photoshop.

I'm not very familiar with units that aren't either official or C3V/SOV - I've barely looked at HOSS or C3G. But, I'll go check out the Princess Leia card from HOSS to see how the idea is implemented there. Because as you pointed out, I don't love the idea of "I can't see that figure's foot so he gets the bonus".

The original design for that particular special read like so:
Take Cover: When a member of Ghost Squadron is adjacent to a terrain piece that has a relative height equal to or greater than the height of that agent, add 2 additional defense dice when defending against nonadjacent attacks.

However, I felt like that might be 1) too complicated to calculate height 2) a break in theme if one of the agents was next to a terrain piece that met the requirement, but the actual figure was in plain sight of the attacking figure. I'll think about this more...

EDIT: @TREX - I just looked at Princess Leia's card. I like how it's worded there - nice and simple.

You could use take cover only works when adjacent to obstacles.

I typically am more into fantasy/sci-fi figs, but your choice of minis and the abilities /stats of these guys makes me really like them (with the caveat of how you tweak TAKE COVER )
