So I had a question about how the Glyphs will work in the tourney. Will all of them be placed symbol side up, or will some like Healer and Wannok be placed power side up to start the game?

That's a good question that we should figure out for this format. Usually we play with them symbol side up, but it's illegal for the Healer glyph to start the game symbol side up since squad figures can't stand on it. I believe that the practice for Power Glyphs at Gencon goes like this:

1. Glyphs are shuffled and placed on maps symbol-side up
2. Armies are placed in start zones
3. Glyphs are flipped from symbol side up to power-side up
4. Order Markers are placed and the game begins
(Treasure Glyphs remain face down, or just aren't used)

This is actually my preferred method when playing anyway (minus not using Treasure Glyphs), so personally I think that's the method we should play for this tourney at least. But that's just my two cents. @The Dewk is the tourney director, so it's up to him ultimately.

Triple header today! I’ve got two monthlies and the tournament at Idaho to account for, so instead of my usual single long report I’m going to be doing three short reports this time around. Here we go!

Utah May Monthly

We’ve been watching a show called My Hero Academia a ton lately, and it really got me in the superhero mood, so I figured I would take advantage of our allowing Marvel figures this time around.

Wandering Monster: Wo-Sa-Ga

Scaperedude has a long history of beating me at this game. But this time, well, he beat me again. I made a mistake and split up my Cutters too much, and he made great use of Wo-Sa-Ga, making sure I wasn’t able to get the attacks I wanted by positioning his figures just right. It was a fun game, one of those ones where you’re really thinking about tactics and stuff. In the end it came down to time and it was a few of his figures vs my Iron Man and Kursus. Or maybe Kursus was dead. I forget. Anyway, he was able to get the win through that.

Wandering Monster: Kelda

Deathstalkers are cool but fall to Cutters running around. Q9 is good but falls when you get consistent attacks from height on him with Iron Man. Krugs value falls when he has to chase Goblins one at a time. Highlight of the game was when I used Kelda to engage Q9, and then Cannon used her to throw her into the lava to get her out of the way and, more importantly, get some points for the Wandering Monster Slayer prize.

Wandering Monster: Sahuagin Raider x4

This was a close game. I don’t even remember why, but it came down to time and was only a difference of a few points. But I’m getting memories of this game mixed up from when we played practice games for this. I do remember Asterios died way too quickly. Iron Man assassinated the Minotaur before he could get to my cutters. But then Stingers carried the game for True for a while, and in the end it was Wo-Sa-Ga with scattered Nagrubs against my Kursus and Goblins. Way close, but I pulled out ahead in the end.

Wandering Monster: Dumutef Guards x2

I’d been hearing about Ben all day. He’d been kicking butt. And here I was facing the Minions again, with a Dragon to boot. Well, Ben opened with the Dragon and his Greenies, and I sent in Iron Man, knowing my Goblins would be useless unless the Avenger took out the Dragon. The two went toe-to-toe, duking it out with Greenies trying to catch up, and Iron Man took out the Dragon after taking serious damage himself. He was killed by a couple Greenies a turn or two after, but I had the swing I needed. Now my Goblins could charge the Minions unmolested, and I’d learned my lesson about splitting up - namely, to not to. So I took out the Minions one-by-one while Scurrying the Cutters all over, then caught up to the Marro for the win.

There’s an army that I’ve really been wanting to play for a while, and it just so happened to fit really well at 600 points for this format, so I decided upon it pretty quickly.

Hydras are afraid of Dwarves so they hung back while the Orcs took point. I sent Ornak after the Treasure Glyph only to roll a 1 and take a wound. But that happens, so I tried again. Rolled another 1. Took another wound. But it won’t happen three times in a row, right? Kind of. I rolled a 2. Another wound. Then Mogrimm finished off the flag bearer. During all this, we had been skirmishing around the map. My Orcs were outnumbered, but I was able to get an advantage by letting the Dwarves go after glyphs and then take attacks from height on them. I took out a Krav or two as well before I had to resort to my Hydras, who came up to finish the game for the win.

Sometimes when you go to a tourney, you meet your natural predator. This time I met mine. I had a clustered start zone and Saints Wrath won initiative and Zelrig took a shot at my start zone, killing four Heavies and wounding Nerak (I did have one Heavy survive the fires, though, so I count that as a small win). From there I advanced Heavies to catch the dragon, who answered with more fire. I was lucky enough to kill Zelrig by the end of round one, but he had taken out a sizable chunk of my army and my forces were pretty strung out. That meant that when Moltenclaw came out to play he and his Greenscales had an easy time picking my forces off. The hydras did a little bit of damage but fell quickly by blanking on their defense rolls. It was a quick, clean win for Saints Wrath.

Minions are scary. So is Q9. But through a combination of more numbers, a ton of attack dice, and poor defensive rolls on Michela's part brought me the win. I was able to get the jump on Q9 with a Hydra at one point, and throughout the game my Heavies were going toe-to-toe with the Minions, which doesn't usually happen. I lost over half my figures in the process, but the win was mine in the end.

Ah, the 4th. Another natural predator of orcs. Basically, I lost. I almost killed all of the 4th, but not quite. Highlight was when I had a Hydra with one life remaining and was able to heal it on Kelda, only to have it promptly killed the next turn by 4th muskets. Sometimes my Hydras just get sick of rolling defense.

It's important to note that Leaf It was playing well under the point limit due to a miscalculation. That meant I was already starting with an advantage. Then take into account that my Heavies and Hydras just outlast the Sneaks and it will make sense that I was able to roll through them. The Warwitch was a little annoying, but I eventually caught her and took her out. Tandros and Ana were hiding in a corner where I could only engage Ana if I also engaged Tandros. But that fizzled when I had a Hydra reach and hit Ana, and Tandros soon followed his party member.

Utah June Monthly

With the format of unlimited start zone spaces, I had the choice of either bringing a horde army, or a horde-killing army. I quickly decided to do the horde-killing army (as did True - he brought a fun army of DW8K and 9K, Kursus, and Deathreavers). And I couldn’t resist venturing to my homeland of Japan again. (Special note: I’m not Japanese. Except in my mannerisms. But no it’s not my homeland.)

Not a super strong army, even for a horde-killing one, although multi-attacking specials are always good. It just has potential. Q10 makes them a little better and ninjas are just fun, which is all I was looking for.

Also, why Otonashi over Isamu? Well, first off I didn’t want Isamu just cause. But also I like throwing in Otonashi into a ninja build as a glyph-grabber; with 10 move she can grab a glyph in one turn on most maps, and with ninjas you usually don’t have any other hope to hold a glyph.

Zach opened with Krav while I moved up some ninjas (couldn’t get Otonashi on a glyph turn 1 on this map). Krav killed Moriko and Otonashi super quickly and then put wounds on Kantono, and Q10 moved up and took out a Krav. Krav took a glyph and then Drones started advancing, so Q10 switched his attention to them. He took out a few, but the Drones overwhelmed him pretty quickly. Too quickly - if I remember correctly he got Q10 while there were still Order Markers on him so he had a few free turns to just roll over Kantono and Shiori. I was totally steamrolled this game - Q10 did okay but it still wasn’t close. Mimring was never touched.

This game’s beginning was hilarious. Naturally, against Vipers my army was a dream, especially Q10 with four attacks a turn. Well, first round I got eight attacks on Venocs with Q10. I killed zero. While disheartening, it was really funny.

My dice got better after that. Ammron kept moving up Vipers but never got the Frenzies he was looking for, and Q10 and Moriko took turns mowing them down. Towards the end it got close, though. He killed Q10, and then was able to start taking out my ninjas. Especially once the Venoc Warlord got involved. They killed the Warlord before they died, but at the end it came down to one lone Viper against Kantono. I had the last turn of the round, so I slid Kantono over onto a Wound glyph. Easy to kill the last Viper for the win with it, right? Nah, I rolled a 1, and Kantono took a wound.

He killed the Viper the next round easily, but it was a funny and really close game.

Sometimes when you go to a tourney, you just run into your natural predator. With tons of special attacks, my army was the natural predator to Cannon’s Mezzodemons. He brought them up but Q10 was popping them off fairly easily, so he switched to Q9. But since I had brought up Q10 before Q9 entered the fray, I was able to get some good shots off to inflict some early damage. Q9 tried to retaliate against his brother, but some high-skull attacks from Q10 and Deathwalker-like defense from Q9 led to the bigger brother’s demise. From there it was just dealing with some pesky Mezzodemons, which I thought would be easy. Well, they did Q10 in, but they eventually fell to my ninjas.

Sometimes when you go to a tourney, you just run into your natural predator…

Sir Heroscape and I both knew this game would basically come down to a coin toss - whoever killed the other’s Q10 first would most likely win, as his Q10 would most likely kill my ninjas with ease and all my special attacks would eat through his Cutters. So first round, I first took a glyph with Otonashi while he ran up some Goblins and killed her, then he moved up his Q10 and shot my Q10, and mine took one wound. So my Q10 took height and returned the favor, dealing 2 wounds to Sir H’s Q10. Then we had an initiative roll which was key to the game. I won it, and got my Q10 onto the high middle game to Wrist Rocket Sir H’s Q10. I rolled a mighty 3 skulls! But Sir Heroscape mightily blocked it! But then I rolled a mightier 4 skulls! And Sir Heroscape’s Q10 gave up the ghost. I mean, the wiring. Or programming. Or something.

From there it was just special attacking Goblins. Not that it was a cakewalk - Sir Heroscape did a good job playing an uphill game and managed to take out Q10 and put some wounds on Moriko, but without Scurry Goblins are only so good, especially when Moriko can wade into a crowd of them and reliably take them out (it’s even better when my dice are super hot with skulls). Like I said, sometimes you just meet your natural predator, and I was Sir Heroscape’s this time. (I also count it as revenge on True's behalf, who got his DW8K to Sir H's start zone to gun down Goblins but kept rolling too low.)

Holy cow!!! That is an impressive prize line up. With this being my first tourney . . . I don't really know how the prizes work. Does first place winner get first pick of the prizes being offered, followed by the second place winner? Then so on and so forth . . .


You also mentioned welcoming prize donations. I'd like to bring something to show my appreciation for the warm welcome. Are homemade custom Heroscape prize donations accepted?

Hey Dewk! Thanks for reminding all of us, that takes a lot of time to tag, and write a special message haha! I am in a study for the next 6 weekends, and I will be getting out I think on Saturday mornings around 8 or 9ish I believe, but possibly later than that.. So if it's on July 29th, at 11 AM I should be able to make it.
