Hah! Yesh, it IS gross. I still get a bit queasy if I look at it too closely, but I don't wanna stop. Remember as a kid, sometimes something would smell so bad that you wanted to smell it over and over?

Silver Iron Golem Column

End wall segments with caps, sprayed with Krylon Fusion Metallic Shimmer "Nickel", and an Iron Golem.

I love using stand-alone wall segments. Best LoS blockers in the game. The fact that the Fortress set is still widely and cheaply available only makes them more attractive — especially for players who got into the game late and have no access to glaciers, evergreens, or jungle trees.
(Will the BoV ever relinquish its opposition to their uncapped use? Let's hope so, for the sake of the newer generation.)

So I end up spraying lots of wall pieces, in two different configurations: single isolated Straight segments, and conjoined double End segments. The double Ends are perhaps my favorite: they look great together, like a pair of columns, and are very versatile. Ever find yourself thinking that single rock outcrops don't do enough to block LoS, but that the triple outcrops are overkill, taking up more hexes than necessary? That's the beauty of double End segments. They fill that gap perfectly. And at only $0.25 a pop from Auggie's (!), they're super-affordable. (Don't forget to pick up some wall-walk tiles for 'em too if you need them. Auggie's sells those too.)

I sprayed these with the same more-or-less silver paint as the Flat Silver Tiles. Here you can really see its warm yellowish undertones.

Gotta have something on top to occupy those wall-walk caps though, lest somebody try to land Nilfheim up there! <shiver> Any double-hex figure would work here. I went with the Iron Golem, because his color kinda matched, and because he just looks cool up on a lofty perch. Slice him off his base with an Xacto knife, dab a little super-glue on his big clumpy footsies, and voila. I made four of these things, for when you want your LoS blockers to match. (See some in the background in second pic.)

Black Othkurik Column

End wall segments with caps, sprayed with Krylon Fusion "Gloss Black", and Othkurik.

Here is the black version of the double End wall segments. Just gloss black spray paint, and Othkurik for the top. Slice him off his base, dab his cute little claws with a touch of super-glue (dragons LOVE having their toes tickled I hear ), and plunk him on top.

I used Othkurik because
(a) he's black
and more importantly
(b) Auggie's sells him for only $1.79.

Very nice columns. I like Othkurik more than the Iron Golem though. I think it's because he takes up so much of both hexes. It's a shame you can't make a mirror image of him for a few columns.

Nice idea putting the figures in the columns, I never would have though of that.

Looks like I gotta try that. Do you know how to do a wash? If you do then Heirloom would look good on a silver column with a dark blue wash...

So true! I've wished I could have a mirrored Othkurik too, facing the other way. Then we could pair original and reversed together, flanking some important passageway, like portal guardians.

Thanks KA! You're right, Heirloom would look amazing on a silver column with blue wash. The problem for me....washes require skill, and paintbrushes, and I refuse to frustrate myself with those anymore. Spray paint all the way for this puppy.

Ok then. Maybe if you tried a base coat of blue and then a light one of silver? I've never worked with spray paint before, so I wouldn't know if it's possible to awoid getting the silver in the cracks somehow.

Buddha Heads

Exotic Environments Ancient Stone Head Ruin Aquarium Ornament (available from Amazon here), and Swamp tiles.

We call these Buddha Heads, although I think that's probably a misnomer. (Judging from the iconography, they're more likely Thai/Cambodian Bodhisattvas?)

They're super easy to 'make', although that word already gives me too much credit. Just grab the aquarium ornament, glue it to 8 Swamp tiles, and you're done. (The head actually occupies a space of 10 tiles, but the central 2 are completely covered, so you can leave those out.)

It makes a wonderful LoS blocker. And looks very thematic on a swamp/jungle/water map. Put them along water and swamp water tiles at low level, ideally with some jungle plants nearby, for an 'Apocalypse Now' river's edge feeling. Or put them atop hills or high plateaus to evoke the hilltop temples of Southeast Asia.

The pics below are from one of our team games. Shades, Mezzodemons, and Mindflayers lined up against Granite Guardians and Dragons. All duking it out under the watchful yet peaceful eye of the 'Buddha'. We got a kick out of the contrast between the tense slaughter on the field and the meditative serenity of the lofty heads rising above it all.

Skull Caves

Exotic Environments Skull Mountain Aquarium Ornament (available from Amazon here — select the small size), and Shadow tiles.

Another super-easy custom. Take the aquarium ornament and glue it to 6 Shadow tiles, 3 per side. Voila.

This thing seems almost tailor-made for the game. There's a skull-topped archway at each end, and a tunnel which runs all the way through, perfectly roofing two hexes. The tunnel spaces will easily accommodate all small and medium figures (excluding Kyrie — their wings are too tall). Many large ones will fit inside too (such as Ice Trolls and Templars/Swogs/Groks/Me-Burq-Sa). They can saunter straight in, have a party inside, and exit through the other end if they want. Big figures, though, can't make the squeeze. They're forced to stand at either end and swipe inside. Meanwhile, the side walls block all LoS, so anything standing inside can only be shot if the attacker is lined up on or near axis with the tunnel.

They look great near more Shadow tiles, Dungeon, or Lava. Also fun with swamp water and jungle, for the 'Skull Island' effect. I love putting glyphs inside them — preferably Wannoks, in keeping with the skull theme.
