EDIT: This game didn't go my way. I grabbed glyphs with Eilan and then did not manage to snipe enough wounds on Kozil before he was in my start zone killing my Brutes. My Aubriens also died to some key kills from Eldgrim and Shotgun got one shot by Kozil (3 wounds and Crushing Grasp) next thing I knew I had to face down a full life Kalagrith and a bunch of Tarn with only Chen Tang and a few Sidhe. I did not pull that off.

I led Havechs to get out and get shots on Grimnak. But Tiamat led Banshees (a great move) to try to scream some Havechs. After winning initiative and placing his first two Banshees out of range, I ran three Havechs up, knowing at least one could get screamed. He did indeed get a scream and two attacks, but the attacks were blocked. I got two kills on my 3 attacks (one from range, two from melee), leaving the door open for another scream (but the Banshee attack was blocked). I got 3 kills on my OM3, blowing up one Havech in the process, but neutering the Banshees as only one was remaining.

Round two saw me follow up with Havechs and Tiamat switch to Heavies. I lost initiative again but got the first attacks of the round. A ranged 5v3 to free up a frontline Havech for a Grimnak attack got blocked, as did that Havech's melee attack against a heavy. The last Havech got 2 wounds on Grimnak with a 5v4 but blew himself up in the process. Tiamat got 3 heavy attacks but only 1 went through. That set me up for the big turn of the game:

I triple engaged a heavy (two on high ground, one on even ground). The even ground one got one skull but it went through for a kill. The first high ground one rolled 3 skulls on Grimnak (blocked, but rolled a 19), and then 2 skulls (blocked, rolled another 19) and then 4 skulls (1 shield, dead Grimnak, rolled an 18), and 2 skulls (blocked by a heavy, rolled a 4 to self-destruct). My last Havech got 3 attacks of his own, each of which killed a heavy.

After that it was just cleanup, first by my last Havechs and then by my shieldsmiths. I ended up winning with 6 shieldsmiths, 1 Havech, and Ashi against 1 Heavy and 1 Banshee.

Spoiler Alert!

- Round 1, Wyrms take initiative and push a pair of black wyrmlings up on the map. One is positioned to cover the Lorja Ivor glyph because I have a telegraphed Eldgrim position in my setup. Eldgrim's turn involves him beelining to that Blackwyrmling and taking an attack on level ground. (2/2) Skulls gets rid of a Wyrmling. Eldgrim is annoying and gets taken out after 2 more attacks focused on him over the course of a few turns.

- Black Wyrmlings flub a few acid breaths, still manage to get wounds on John Varan. He pods up with his Soldiers on the southern level 2 and 3 near my startzone. Pathfinders firefight with a lot of wyrmlings and clear all but 3 of them that hide in the start zone. Deathwalker walks up and shoots a missile into the podded soldiers and I choose to get rid of John who has 3 wounds at that point.

- Pathfinders throw a few shots, failing to break deathwalker defenses. They get whittled down in short order and the Zettian Infantry push forward toward my startzone in time for a new round where the romans take initiative. NGS walks out and clears my startzone, I spread some romans around the map and reclaim all the height near my side by clearing of of Zettians. Deathwalker himself is camped out on the southern level 3, two hex near it's own startzone.

- Romans advance, always in groups of 2 but not more and I threaten NGS running all the way to deathwalker because he is enchanted with Eldgrim spirit. My play is to use MBS to whittle down opposing zettians while romans reclaim the board and take valda.

- We play the magican's cup game with order markers and a deathwalker that loves to roll 5/9 or 10 shields for many, many turns. MBS and romans mop up the zettians and eventually nail the two red wyrmlings that came out to help DW9K. The robot isn't afraid to use its special attack on adjacent units and takes out quite a few romans, discouraging them from surrounding with too many.

- NGS mindshackles the deathwalker and then puts it away next turn by killing the blue wyrmling in the start zone.

Army left on the board is 3 Romans, MBS full life, NGS full life, 3 romans, and a traitorous DW9K. Really fun game with Quozl, felt like the DWK was going to just run me over at any point but it rolled 1/3 and 0/3 on a couple of explosions that allowed me to close the distance. Never seen that many shields from a robot though

Map Thoughts:

Map has a lot of areas that allow good pods to form up and hold ground. No lack of height for a big double base figure either, made some use of this with MBS. Lots of cover and ways to boost defense against ranged attacks on the level 3 perches. I really like the 3 hex level 3's, so if something big does land there that you have a spot to engage on level ground.

The brush next to the glyph areas is interesting, I feel like I'm more used to seeing height next to a glyph so you can attack down onto it using a melee unit. Not a complaint, just felt like it was pretty inviting to try and hold. At one point I put a roman here and reinforced it with another so that he could hold the glyph with 4 defense against ranged attacks.

I liked the level 0 straightaway that gives access to the glyph, coming from the west towards valda was pretty easy to walk along and there was even a bush on the way to help with extra defense. I feel like I played on every part of this map to include the three paths out of the startzone. Maybe that's the nature of having some mixed pods but I even used the low ground ring around the hive to roll up on deathwalker.

First time playing on this map, would definitely like to play again here. Felt really open and free, like there were definitely options to think through during development.

EDIT: Tight game with quozl. My early plan to eliminate Brute Gruts and put wounds on Kal with M-43 was thwarted by clutch Berserker rolls from the Tarn. I was fortunate they didn't kill too many M-43 but they did keep me from sneaking more than the one kill on Brute Gruts I managed. Thankfully for me quozl, went to Sidhe next and I was able to use a combination of Wyrms and M-43 to kill them and pull them away from trees. Kal came up and I put a few wounds on her between peppering with M-43 and Wyrms. I grabbed Holdir only for her to kill the Wyrm on it and then she moved away getting double engaged by an M-43 and a Wyrm.

I then won a very clutch initiative after that where he had all 3 OMs on Brute Gruts ready to jump into the fray and I killed one with the init win and then they did no wounds on any of my dudes even after burning a marker. I killed another and the last one one shot Soontir and then engaged two Wyrms (one of which was next to Kal and the other which was heading for Holdir).

I won another clutch initiative and killed the Brute Grut (unfortch needing two shots to do it so it took me an extra turn to grab Holdir) which cost him an OM but she disengaged (taking one wound from the two figures) and burninated some towns on her way. Then I began throwing everything at Kal doing only one wound before a key 3/3 from a White Wyrm and a whiff dropping Kal down to one life.

I won initiative and then it was Wyrms doing cleanup with Kira shooting on occasion. Chen fell pretty quickly and soon it was just a Sidhe and Eldgrim. I had a brief scare where Eldgrim kept not taking wounds but Kira managed to snipe him eventually. (2 Exploit Weakness on the Sidhe earlier)

- Round 1, much to Foudzing's disappointment Eldgrim has OM 1 and runs to take the Holdier Glyph. Lots of positioning takes place, Aubriens are the open vs easy company. Aubriens leverage their range and keep throwing attacks from 7 spaces away, they also try to ping Eldgrim off the glyph to no avail. He stays there well into round 2 where something exciting happens. The Aubriens consolidate and are kiting towards the south east part of the map to deny the 8th infantry any good firefights. I decide to take a single pathfinder and push up to a level 3 past the middle of the board and fire down onto Johnny Shotgun, 5/6 skulls (height + holdir) and Johnny blanks. Impact wasn't seen immediately but that was a powerful hero to oneshot.

- Aubriens actually ground the pathfinders down, made some engagements on lavarock and dismantled them with a couple of frenzy turns denying an order marker at the end of a round. Then they ran towards my startzone next round and proceeded to get a few more frenzies but their only kills scored were a single roman and 1 wound on MBS. The romans woke up and dispatched all but 1 Aubrien on the board and started the uphill grind into PKs. The romans mostly acted as a wall and played a slow defensive game while the PKs looked for opportunities. This section of the ground tapered off with a board state of NGS (2/5 wounds) 3 romans, marcu vs swaysil, 2 PKs, 1 Aubrien, Isamu.

- NGS took a big hit from a PK that took lavarock height on turn 1, then in response disengaged to put himself at 1 life and took height over swaysil who dropped to 1 life (3 skulls vs 0 defense) while the romans killed 1 PK. Swaysil lived through a disengage and cleaned up NGS (depriving me of an OM) and then tried to charge in and finish off 2 romans on height. They both wound up living and clapped back, while the final PK died on lava rock. Board state (2 romans, marcu vs 1 aubrien, isamu).

- Marcu betrays me on the first turn, Shurrig has him come up and kill a roman but he was still developed onto the board. Next turn is Marcu killing the Aubrien, followed by Isamu failing his d20 roll (6) and Marcu finishing things off. Boardstate 1 Roman, Marcu full life.

Frenzy triggered about 5 times this game, made things really scary going into the second half and I was unsure if I had enough steam to actually finish the game. I think the kill on Johnny in the startzone really shaped the lategame by removing a key tool from the board. Eldgrimm also survived 6 attacks before going onto NGS, giving the pathfinders effectively 5 base attack for most of their lifespan and making NGS fast enough to catch anything that could shoot at him or fly around. Lava was not kind to Shurrig, it killed every figure that he left on it (3) while the disengage favored him but not me (I missed 1, he hit 2).

I think this map had a lot of depth to it. Maps that are not symmetrical are some of the ones that I enjoy the most because the game feels a lot less static. I think the hill of lava rock presents a high risk vs reward strategy. At one point Shurrig tried to push an Aubrien around the top of it to start reaching over into my startzone, I had to commit 3/4 of John Varan's special attacks to ensure a single figure wasn't able to utilize it. That being said, I feel like I had the option to keep the fight away from that hill, especially with glyph placement. If Lorja Ivor had been by the hill instead of Holdir, I think the game could have become a bit lopsided with 8 range aubriens on height.

With things as they were I feel like the map flowed quite well. The center portion of the map was difficult for me to utilize well. Some of this may have been because of the less mobile army that I led with (Easy Company). I wasn't able to make use of the height 4, 2 hex lava rock and they led to my downfall because Aubriens were able to use them as engagement points to protect their startzone and get some crucial kills through. I had a hard time finding a good spot for john on this map, there wasn't a particularly good bubble where he could form a pod without giving up a lot of attacks from height on him or his group.

The area near the ruins, with the level 3 (2 hex showing) and level 4 (single lava rock) were particularly interesting. In the second half with a more defensive posture I was able to form an effective barrier of romans and terrain that did not all for any attacks to get through to MBS for a couple of turns while I still had good ability to crack back. The roads were something I wasn't able to utilize well here, because PKs and Aubriens were leveraging the lava rocks in the center and throughout the map. The level 3 (2 hex) in the west part of the map are rather tricky, they look like good terrain to claim but being only 6 spaces to traverse for the PKs made them something I had to steer clear of. Shurrig leveraged these well.

The part of the map that I was unable to use is the level 2 near the tree in the northern start zone, Shurrig used his a bit for development. I considered it as a spot that John Varan and Pathfinders could pod up but had to discard it immediately. Could have definitely been a threatening spot if I had reversed my strategy and claimed Lorja Ivor instead of Holdir but I'll have to try that area out in a different game for something. Fun map, would play again... appreciate the water in the startzones not being part of the startzone that would have made my placement suck a bit more and made my posturing a lot more difficult.
