Is there a particular reason why the D20 roll & switch is being done before the attack? Over the way we handled Heroic Duty. Not saying either is better just wanting to know the decision for having 2 similar mechanics function differently.

MISDIRECTION 14
When an opponent's figure within 6 spaces targets Fantomex for an attack, you may roll the 20-sided die. If you roll a 14 or higher, Fantomex takes no damage and you may choose an opponent’s figure within 3 clear sight spaces that is not the attacking figure. Switch Fantomex with the chosen figure and the attacking figure must target and attack the chosen figure, even if engaged. Figures switched with Misdirection 14 never take any leaving engagement attacks.

HEROIC DUTY
If a friendly figure that is within 3 spaces of Superman would roll defense dice against a normal, non-adjacent attack, instead Superman must move adjacent to the figure if he is able to. Superman must roll defense and take any resulting wounds from the attack instead of the friendly figure. When Superman uses Heroic Duty, he will take all leaving engagement attacks.

Actually, they both trigger at nearly the same time. Misdirection is after targeting, Heroic Duty is before rolling defense.* I felt that listing the targeting phase was a clearer indication of when the rolling and switch happened.

*I see it as "targeting > rolling attack dice > rolling defense dice", so there is a slight difference in exactly when it would trigger.

Mechanically I think before rolling makes more sense - really, it probably should work that way for Superman, too, in case of powers that would alter the number of attack dice rolled or what have you.

Agreed. Anytime you're interrupting attacks, it can get messy, but I felt that before rolling any dice made things cleaner.

All good just wanted to make sure we were aware that they have similar mechanics but are actually different.

I'm all good with your power because you included the word "must". Without the must then I believe one of our previous discussion meant the attacker was able to retarget after the switch. I also agree that it is tidier before the attack roll. Superman does make sense though because he is always stepping in at the last minute .
