Would You Like to See Myvra as a new General for VC?

Here is how my friend defined it for him and how I pretty much look at it.

Lawful - There are THE RULES (either personal code or external laws or what have you). We can not violate THE RULES. If we do there are major consequences.

Chaotic - Screw the rules. I will decide what is right.

Neutral (on the Law/Chaos scale) - Eh, I'll follow the rules established by others but I'm not going to be beholden to them if it means surviving.

Evil - Myself (and maybe a small select group of others) deserve the same rights as myself. All others are inferior.

Good - All people deserve the same rights as myself.

Neutral (on the Good/Evil scale) - Those close to me deserve the same rights as myself. Others probably do but I'm not going to go out of my way to ensure that.

Given that, I can certainly make an argument for Vydar as N. Not saying these are right, but it's an easy way for me to make a quick judgment check for my own system.

Any categorization for a sufficiently complex system will be inherently flawed. We can take things and bin them any way that we want, it's just a question of how useful that binning is. I could categorize all the animals on Earth as either water animals, land animals, or air animals but that's not necessarily a useful scheme in order to get a more profound understanding of what is going on. The fact that it has weird corner cases that don't fit isn't the issue: biology has plenty of critters who stride dividing lines and don't easily fall into one category or another.

The alignment scheme in D&D works the same sort of way as any other categorization. It can be useful as a short hand and give you an idea for how some things will function but there are plenty of gray areas or parts where it just isn't that helpful. I wouldn't get too bent out of shape thinking that we should fill the gaps within the system or draw hard lines among the generals. For now, I don't think that there is a need or even that much gain for VC doing a new general. I wouldn't go as far to say that it can never be done, but likely better avoided at this juncture. I do believe it would serve to split the player base as well.

This is just like with people, in my opinion, you cannot categorize people into things like Gender, Sexuality, Morality in some cases, etc. People are all different, and there is no binaries, just full spectrums in nature. The same is true for this. The generals are hard to categorize, as with life, there is shifting ideals that change them as they go through life (much like how people's experiences can shape their views). So, I don't think sticking one of the generals, as here, it fits here, as such and such. I mean, can't Ullar or Aquilla have more of a rage against Vydar for crimes against nature, and kill him? Would they be justified, and wouldn't that be in character for them? Even, if it was justified, would that make them evil? How exactly do you classify a constantly shifting system?

Ahh, Myvra. What a great age of Scaping. Anything could happen, and bounderies were demolished as soon as they would've been raised.

I'm glad to see this discussion brought up again, on both (well, largely just one) arguements. My two cents would be that Myvra (or, anything else) should wait until you guys have a hard time breaking down walls.

I think new generals sound great. Check out @Soundwarp SG-1 customs. They are awesome. Have great backstory, very fun thematic little elements. This is the age of Custom scape. Why not have fun with it. That is what its about, right.

Right. And that's why we have a vibrant community of customs makers here. Nothing is really off limits: superheroes, Star Wars, Star Trek, G.I. Joe, new generals, encumbrance rules, sustained flight, vehicles, Buffy, Transformers ... the sky's the limit.

But none of that needs to take VC off its focus of basically trying to do what Hasbro would have done had the core game continued.

Heck, I'm working on my own Star Trek customs and terrain enhancements. They will be high quality, and fun. @Soundwarp SG-1 is doing beautiful, brilliant work with his own new generals. But neither of those projects belongs in VC, whose goal is to continue Heroscape in a spirit of stewardship, without tampering with its established core. The "received universe," as @Dad_Scaper so nicely put it.

There's no reason in the world why there can't be a "Myvra Project" whose dedicated goal is to develop the backstory and units for a new general. The units can go through as rigorous a development process as its participants will tolerate. They can have synergy with classic and VC units, and players can consider them every bit as canonical as they consider VC units.

But this can all happen without pulling VC away from its mission, diluting its degree of acceptance within the community, and diverting its production stream to focus disproportionately on a fledgling general.

My generals are actually meant to more-or-less line up with the 10 dual color combos of Magic the Gathering (with 2 exceptions). I'm not a fan of D&D style alignment systems personally, I don't think 'good' and 'evil' are something you can measure on a scale like that.

EDIT- Though I guess the current ones would be something like:
Volthrax- Chaotic Evil
Ozirael- Lawful Evil, though most of his troops certainly think they're the good guys.
Xenothea-Neutral Evil?
Sigyn- Not sure, some type of good I guess. She goes around punching things for fun, but she does have a code of honor thing going on. Chaotic but semi-structured good?
Frejya- Neutral Good
Bragi- Not sure, probably at least goodish

I immediately regret my vote. I think that a new general is a great idea because a game like ours should always be expanding. Even Magic: the gathering introduces new card types to stay fresh. I do not feel that this is something that needs to happen immediately though. There is plenty of room for the game to expand within the realm of the current seven generals.

Good point! Get back to me when Magic adds a color. Because that seems to me to be Magic's version of generals.

The Magic design team has explicitly said they're never going to add another Color, and Color is definitely Magic's equivalent to the Generals. Though in fairness, there are a lot more options when it comes to Colors than Generals (32 I think, compared to 7), unless we end up with 'hybrid' general cards at some point.
