It was used some, it's just only going to be used after you use the SA.

Here's a report for Zabu.

I really like how Zabu plays right now; he's simple and thematic, and him and Ka-Zar are one of the most fun duos to play (especially on jungle maps). Hunters Companion is pretty interesting because it's not straight-up bonding, I liked some of the strategies it offered.

At first, I was worried Zabu would be too strong as-is, especially since Kraven is incredible for his cost and Ka-Zar on a jungle map is killer; but after running four games I think Zabu is perfect at 130. His team did lose all four games, but at least in the last couple his team had below-average luck, and I matched them up against some tougher builds (namely the Hawks and the Titans). Zabu has the potential to do some serious damage, but he's fragile and a little tricky to use just right, and if his Companion goes down early (which can certainly happen) he'll be stranded and probably die too.

Zabu is perfect as-is in my opinion.

- Give a brief overview. Backed by Cap, Ka-Zar and Zabu made a deadly first-strike team, taking down Storm early in the first round, and then both the Sidekicks in the second. But Black King was able to get in on the Avengers, and with a little luck on his side took them down one by one, pulling out the win for the Mutant team.

QUICK GAME SUMMARY:
For the first three rounds Initiative favored the Avengers, which was big for Cap. Storm came out with Armor to face off against them, but since she was Ka-Zar’s Prey, the Hunting Duo moved up unto height and killed her in a single turn (Ka-Zar did the first four wounds, then Zabu Pounced to finish her off). Black King was slow to get into battle, and while he advanced, the Avengers were able to take down Armor and then Jubilee (Zabu dealing the final wound against both of them). But then luck decided to side with Black King as he climbed his way unto the plane, first taking out Bucky, then Ka-Zar, then facing off against Cap. Right before he died Cap got a big attack in and brought Black King down to 1 life, but this only made Black King stronger and he easily finished off Cap and then Zabu.

QUICK GAME SUMMARY:
Kraven and Zabu went out first to take on Hawkgirl (Kraven’s Prey). Getting the first strike due to being able to reposition with Big Game Tracker, Kraven and Zabu were able to put 4 wounds on Hawkgirl. But before they could finish her off, the Hawkmen moved in and Maneuvered her to safety. Zabu had unfortunately gotten positioned where the Hawkmen could easily get to him, and he went down in the second round. With Hawkgirl already wounded, Hawkman charged in and faced off against Cap, taking him down in 2 turns. Hawkman then faced off with Kraven, but Kraven was easily dealing him damage and removing his OMs. Spidey came out at the end of the third round to finish off Hawkman. Things were looking good for the Avengers at this point, but then it all changed when Kraven missed his attack and Hawkgirl swooped in to kill Spidey while he still had 2 OMs on his card. With no turns to fight back with, Kraven quickly fell to the Hawkmens’ attacks. After that, the Hawks easily took down Bucky to claim victory.

Ka-Zar and Zabu got an early attack in on Cyborg to inflict 3 wounds, but that was about it. Cyborg backed up to Raven so she could take his wounds, and then Raven sat at the back most of the game slowly transferring those wounds unto the enemy (particularly Ka-Zar). Nightwing got in on Ka-Zar, and by the beginning of the second round Ka-Zar was already dead, losing his team an OM and leaving Zabu in a bad spot. Bizarro put up a good fight, taking down Nightwing and beating up on the other two Titans, but a lucky blow from Cyborg in the fourth round brought a sudden end to the game.

While everyone else was rolling well on attack dice, Zabu rolled poorly both times he Pounced, and he whiffed on a key defense roll, leading to him not doing much. Had the dice been more in his favor, I believe Zabu would have been able to swing the game for his team.

While Bizarro and the Hunters quickly set up, Colossus and Sabretooth set up a Fastball Special. Unfortunately for them, they missed the auto-wound; to make things worse for Sabretooth, Ka-Zar got in on him and, with a few lucky attacks, quickly took him down. To end the first round, Zabu risked a Pounce at Colossus but only dealt 1 wound. The next round, OM 1 went to Bizarro so he could fly in and protect Zabu, but initiative favored the Mutants and Zabu died to Lockheed’s attack. Bizarro and Ka-Zar were able to take down Lockheed and rack up the wounds on Colossus, but then Colossus’s dice went hot, and over the next couple rounds where Ka-Zar couldn’t do any wounds he was able to take down Bizarro and Ka-Zar.

While Zabu and his team never had terrible luck, they consistently had below-average luck. With balanced dice, Zabu would have been doing a little bit more damage each game and his team would have won the first and fourth game for sure.

Tough call. Dice were not always in Zabu’s favor for my playtests, so these tests say FAIL. However I believe it should be a Pass at 130.

- USAGE TEST/ Consider whether or not all of the powers on this card were used or at least usable.
Conditional Pass. Zabu is only useful if taken with a Human Hunter (currently only Kraven meets this condition) and on a map that consists of 2 or more forest or jungle sets. But this is no worse than saying Sandman is only good if there is sand tiles or Iceman is only good using Tundra sets.

- STRATEGY TEST/ Consider whether or not the design offers any real strategy or interesting tactics to the overall game.
Pass.

Zabu is actually quite powerful in the right conditions. However, after doing these playtests it seemed relatively easy to nullify those conditions. By either avoiding trees, moving OMs or direct assaults on either Zabu or his companion very quickly eliminated all his advantages.

Hmm, 130 might be a little high, but I'll wait to see after Ronin/Ornery. As to Usage Test, I could have sent them Ka-Zar with Zabu to give them a second option, but I forgot to.
