DeathDoom's Modded Figures- Shinies, necromancy, and Wolves!

This thread is intended to show off my simple variety of figure modifications. I'm hoping that this thread can serve as a basis for others to begin modding with, as most of my mods are simple and without original sculpting. I was inspired by Soundwarp's mods (who hasn't been?), but I have almost no desire to sculpt my figures as extensively as he does (although I don't think that anybody can argue with his results.) My mods rarely use any material that did not come from my available stockpile of miniatures, making them fairly easy to reproduce. All figures are held together with superglue.

Lord Thanden and his Lieges: Made from 1 squad Capuan Gladiators, 1 squad Knights of Weston, 1 squad Marro Warriors, and 1 Airborne Elite.

My first real modification was of two of the most expensive squads around nowadays, a combination of Knights of Weston and Capuan Gladiators. Lord Thanden is made by chopping apart two Knights and the Capuan holding the spear and net. I removed the net and replaced that arm with the falchion arm of a knight, leaving the spear intact.



I selected the legs of the knight with the most similar posture to the Capuan to make sure the pose looked natural. I also put up a couple of GIMPed prototypes on Facebook and asked for suggestions. I highly recommend this process, as I got a ton of feedback, even from people who don't play.



The skulls were taken from Marro Warriors, and they were really only intended to cover some bare plastic on Thanden's waist, where a seam is still visible on the figure, but I was very pleased with the result.





Thanden's Lieges are what happened to my incomplete squads. They were more of an experiment than an attempt at a finished product, but I still think that they look nice. For the most part, I replaced some of the Knights' armored limbs with some bare Marro bits, and covered holes with pieces shaved off of the aliens' legs and guns.



The Capuan arm holding the Airborne Elite's head was not a very good match, but I liked that idea too much to use Marro pieces.

Corvax: Made from an ocean Toob of some kind and a chewed-up plastic caveman. Don't start here, please.

Corvax was just made from old toys while I was trying to make Merkoth (later on this post) with an Ocean Critters Toob. But it turned into an undead Drow monstrosity that has become "that hentai monster" to my friends. It is poorly painted, but I'm still going to show it off.

Also: This is how I learned that semi-gloss coats are the devil. No-gloss spray coats of sealant give just a little sheen that matches Scape figures quite well, while there's nothing 'semi' about semi-gloss sealant.

After those experiments, I started to compile various miniatures for customs- such as trollandtoad's 50 WoW minis for $10 deal- but I didn't get back into modding until I found a comic book shop nearby that sells Mage Knight minis for 50 cents a pop. I'm going broke by the quarter.

Hidden Name: made from a WoW Vindicator Hodon, Umbrage, and Drokkar of the Four Boars, with pieces from a Mage Knight Dwarven Rotary Fuser and Fell Reaper.

This mod is a figure that I have made for a 7-unit collection that I'll be releasing once I have all the figures and cards made up. In the meantime, here's the figure:



It's made from a WoW Vindicator Hodon with the cape and tail pulled off (my favorite thing about WoW minis is that you can disassemble them without a knife. The game is pretty dull, though.) The crossbow has been modified into an axe using the Drokkar of the Four Boars miniature. The wings are from a Mage Knight Fell Banshee or Fell Reaper or something Fell, and they are glued into the back in a slot that was formed when the cape was removed. I put the wings together in a vice, and it came to a perfect fit.



The second cape came is in place to cover the gaping hole the wings are in, and the minigun was pretty much cut and pasted from a Mage Knight Dwarven Rotary Fuser.



The second cape is from a WoW Umbrage, and is painted, but not well. But it looks alright, so I don't care.

Hidden Name: Made from Mage Knight Blade Golems, Amotep Incinerators, a Storm Golem, and a chain.

This is a second figure from the same project, based on a Mage Knight Storm Golem and a few Amotep Incinerators.



The wings are just bits from MK Blade Golems, and the chain was two bucks for three yards at Michaels. This is probably a work in progress, and I will continue to update this thread as I progress.

Merkoth the Wereshark: Made from a DC Heroclix King Shark and some Mage Knight Tanglewood Spirits and the skull from some witch or another.

I've had this card lying around for absolute ages, and was really excited when my local comic book shop got a King Shark in! I was originally going to paint over the grey, but decided that there are more creative ways to make a zombie, so the only paint he received was a few dunks in a brown wash.

Manauvi, Lord of Worms: Repaint of a Mage Knight Death Merchant

This is just me messing around with some new metallic paints on a Mage Knight Death Merchant. The original was awful, with way too much yellow and a lot of wear. This version is mostly silver over red-washed armor, with a second black wash applied after the painting.

I got the Wolfen Army Box for the upcoming C3V units, and was a bit disappointed. The paint job just wasn't there, so I decided to give them some flash:

These figures are arranged left to right in the order that I painted them. The Shadow Tracker on the far right is interesting, as I used a blue wash for it, but I am not sure that I'm done with it.

This is a comparison of the figures. From left to right:
A pre-painted Hunter from the starter box, one of my repainted Fangs, the original paint job of the Fangs in the Army Box, and a pre-painted Sacred Vestal.

Corpsemender Vitalo: Made from three Mage Knight Flesh Golems, a WoW Marlowe Christophers, another WoW mini, and a chain.

This is the figure to one of my oldest customs. It's been lying in my customs thread for quite a while, and this is the closest that I could get to the figure that I had in mind.

The positioning of the hands to accept the chain was really just a happy accident. The chain itself is frozen using superglue.

And it has faces everywhere.

Have to agree with Rocktroll, that figure sure was something to brag about. But Lord Thanden and his Lieges... I cringed at the idea of mutilating my KoWs and Gladiators. Hehe.

There aren't any new modifications up, but I do have some of the repaints that I've been dabbling in posted. My paints are all craft-store acrylics, and the washes are Mop n Glo with water. Check em out!

Alright, so I am in need of a figure.

This might be a difficult figure to find, but I really need a male human with a hood and short jacket, open if possible, preferably black. It will need to be plastic, but pre-painted is not a necessity. I'm willing to offer a copy of the figure that I make from it in return for whoever can find me a suitable miniature.

Do I have any takers?

It was funny when I read your post Deathdoom I had a possible suitable figure right on my gaming table.
This figure is The Hood from Heroclix. He is in the Mutations and Monsters set and is #15 in the set. Don't know if this is what your looking for but I thought is matched your description to a point.
