I worked with customer service to make sure I was doing everything that I was supposed to; I used the tent that came with it to block out everything, I used it in "near mode" and I scanned it in 3 different positions. I tried this roman, a marrow warrior and a couple others. It was a real disappointment.

It's actually a very user friendly device, just doesn't deliver on output quality.

What software does it use to create the model?

It has it's own software. I've already shipped it for return, sorry, can't experiment with it anymore.

I do not claim to be a good painter, but here are my steps (I used regular old craft paints):

Two base coats (3 parts blood orange to 2 parts brown)
Semi dry-brush coat (1 part yellow, 1 part blood orange, 1 part brown, 5ish parts white)
Two shoulder/claw coats (4ish parts silver, 1 part black)
Wash (1 part blood orange, 1part brown, water added, only to the flesh parts)
Dry brush (1 part yellow, 1 part white, only to the flesh parts)
2 coats of mod podge (not yet done in this pic)

It is for the good of the community, and my impulsive annual bonus habits, that I present to you a comparison of that crappy SOL scanner and my new EinScan-SE! This is what a true 3d scan looks like!

Now I feel like we need to start over again!

At least the cleanup will be easier--that is beautiful!

You might want to use Blender. I can help you as you get started.
