Think of it like a table top MMO. You create a character and go on quests for the Pathfinder Society (an actual organization in the game world). In real-life time, each quest is *usually* about the length of one session (3-5 hours). At the end of the quest you get a chronicle sheet detailing loot, xp, and boons that your character earned in that quest. The neat part is that you can take your character, with their chronicle sheets, to any Pathfinder Society game in the world and join in. Needlessly to say that's pretty cool if you (or perhaps your friends) have trouble committing to regular play.

There are a few drawbacks; for instance, there are limitations and constraints defined by the Society campaign that can be kind of inconvenient depending on what you're used to (see some of the earlier Q&A in this thread).

Thanks. Yeah that gives me an idea of what it is. I wouldn't mind joining in. I currently run a D&D 5e campaign up at my college, but I have yet to play Pathfinder. How different is it compared to 5e?

It is a branch off of D&D 3.5. In comparison with that edition, it does have a few of the improvements that 5e implemented, but for the most part 5e is much more streamlined. On the flipside, 5e is also much more constrained in terms of character options.

All that to say, it should feel pretty familiar, but there will be obvious differences. It won't be like trying to move to one of the non-d20 based RPG systems.
