Thanks guys.

Cav, I cannot be entirely certain unless I try to damage it. It feels pretty solid, but I'm sure that it could be crushed with a little force. Though I think it will hold up to general usage wear and tear.

I also put a spray seal on it to make it a little more water resistand and preserve the paint.

So far as the joint compount - HIGHLY recommended.

Awesome! I love incorporating actual hexes into the terrain.

Can do, oh fishy ape.

I am working on a new terrain piece, very similar to the stone wall, but a little more detailed and larger.

I think I'll dream up something in a whole new direction next.

OH! And I also made a little tree. I am going to change the paint scheme on it, then post it and talk about how I made it.

New Tree

Here's a new tree, my second. This is larger than the first one, and is my first custom where I sacrificed a precious HS tile. Being that I finally got my second Master Set, I felt I could endure making the contribution.

What I'm thinking is to press a texture into the wet compound. But I'm thinking I might have to go ahead and make a brick design out of balsa sticks and press it again and again to get the brick pattern.

OR I could just leave it looking like stucco. Your thoughts?

- And thanks for the positive input, guys. It's not too hard. Just some balsa, a jigsaw or just a hacksaw blade, and some glue. -
You could use sheet foam and draw the texture into it. Then attach the foam to the outside.

These customs are really nice and I think I'll try some of these.

Thanks

Thanks, all. A lot of the guys like Raudulfr have got so much stuff and detailed tutorials that it's not really as difficult as you might think to get some nice results. Sometimes people say "Oh, I could never....blah blah blah," but you'd be surprised. Give it a go!

There are other EXCELLENT tree tutorials, but I'll sum up what I did:

Take at least 8 strands of heavy wire (lighter than a clothes hanger) and start twisting them up, leaving some open at the bottom for roots.

Take a few strands and twist them out for branches. Continue on up the tree, twisting out strands in pairs. You can keep on sub-dividing all the way out to tiny branches.

If you need to, thread in some more wire and keep going. Depending on the type of tree you are doing, make sure the tree gets smaller at each major branching.

Wrap it up in layers of painters tape. Thicken up the trunk really well; you might even take extra wire and go around it a few times.

At this point, I used hot glue to attach mine to a HS hex. If it looks like a paper-coated piece of cr*p at this point. You are doing it right.

Coat the whole thing in drywall compound. Either spray it on, or goop it on with a paintbrush. I actually dip mine in a bucket of compound at first! This will give it TONS of texture. (You will want to protect the edge of your hex with some tape, so you don't get it all gooped up.)

If you want to, you can add a little texture manually by dragging your brush carefully where you want the pattern to go.

After it dries overnight, use some contact spray glue around the base and you can sprinkle on something like kitty litter to give a look of pebbles. I also added a white rock I bought by the bagful at the Dollar Tree.

Paint it a dark color for the insides, then, using drybrush techniques that are well-described on this board, you will get a marvelous finished piece.

KIDS, TRY THIS AT HOME!
