Re: Am I alone?
I went ahead and pre-ordered for several reasons.
When Wave 7 came out I never saw them for sale until several months after they were first released. Even Hasbro.com didn't start selling them until just a little while ago. So if you are interested in getting them now without a significant search or price hike on eBay I'd recommend pre-ordering. The second reason I would pre-order is because even if I don't like a figure someone else will. I don't play in competitive tournaments. Just among my friends and family. But each of us have different tastes in what they like. Since I have all of the piece that my group plays with, it doesn't do me any good to just get figures only I like. Re: Am I alone?
Well, I've preordered Aquilla's Alliance and half of Wave 8 as part of a large order my group has placed. This is my second time preordering; the first time was when I preordered Wave 7 through the comic store I used to work at and was able to buy it at wholesale prices.
I preordered the upcoming stuff because: 1) preorder prices are less than I'd pay in stores here in NYC; 2) Heroscape holds its value very well - if I discover I don't like the figures I bought I can always sell them for at least what I paid; and 3) it's been a helluva drought. Einar's puppy, I don't think you're weird for NOT preordering - if I could scour WalMarts and Targets in flyover country I might wait until the product hit stores as well. (Then again, I remember reading all those threads about people who are still hunting for Wave 7 and I'm glad I got those vampires early.) But there's nothing weird about doing it our way either. |

Re: Am I alone?
Obviously you are not alone in your choice not to pre-order. The reasons you give are just a few valid reasons why many do not pre-order.
You need to remember that many people on this site are adults who make decent money and choose to spend some of their "disposable income" on Heroscape. We pre-order simply because it is convenient. It's sort of like the 7-11. Everyone knows that you can buy a gallon of milk much cheaper at the grocery store, but sometimes it's just quicker to grab it at the "sev". I've been slow to climb aboard the pre-order bandwagon myself, but a combination of an increasingly busy life, past bad experiences trying to find multiple copies of new expansions, $3.65/gal gasoline, and some reasonable on-line prices with free shipping have encouraged me to take the plunge. (this is my first House Mouse purchase and already I'm beginning to understand why people rave about Sandra's customer service.) What I did what pre-order the "minimum" that I know I will buy anyway. I will probably still pick up a fourth set of the wave 8 commons and a third or fourth jungle pack, but now I know that come June 13th (or so) I will have all the new 'scape I crave without having to go searching all over town. But there are plenty of people who only buy the expansions that they truly want after having carefully researched the stats. There is nothing wrong with that, and you are not alone. In fact there are other games where that is my approach as well. But for Heroscape, I want at least 3 of every common and terrain pack. So pre-order just made sense for. It obviously does not make sense for you. Here's hoping you are able to get a great deal on whatever components you choose to purchase, and may they bring you many hours of enjoyment. Re: Am I alone?
The more you buy online, the sweeter Sandra's free shipping deal gets. That's time and money you didn't spend on looking for the stuff, plus you get it early as possible. To me, that's worth a little preorder.

And to the best of my understanding, unless you receive a 100% discount, any purchase will cost you money in the end. The purpose of a pre-order is usually not to guard against an item selling out. In fact, just the opposite. Many game companies (and other businesses as well) take pre-orders as a way of insuring that it is worth it for them to produce the game. It also provides distributors with a sense of how much of an item they should order. Some companies, such as Libronix (Bible research software company that converts many books to electronic form), offer discounts on pre-orders so that it is cheaper to buy at pre-order than after the item is published. As I've already said in several related threads, I don't often pre-order, but for the upcoming new HS waves it made sense for me to pre-order this time. Re: Am I alone?
I'm not preordering so that I can buy at WalMart in hopes that they will pick up Marvel Wave 1

But I am not going to preorder any of the rest of the units, and sort of regret my decision to preorder the Cavalry. Because you are right. Basically I think that most people who preorder are closet OCD completists or people with lots of disposable income. They just want one of everything. Say it isn't so!!!!! |

My final reason is that my parents think I've got an obsesion. Sure, they're right, but it doesn't change the fact that they wouldn't support me preordering. Me to!!! BLACKMOON'S SIEGE Heroscape Wave 9 / Coming in July of 2009 (Everyone do this) |

As for me, not in the closet about my OCD when it comes to HeroScape (completist with a storage fixation); but not so much disposable income, either. |
