There is something about taking a cheap figure or pieces of broken cheap figures and making something beautiful out of it that inspires me. I love doing this sort of thing, especially if it saves me money. With a wife and 4 kids, every cent counts, so I don't ever pay more than 1 or 2 bucks for a figure, and if I can't buy the figure that I want for that cheap, I make it.
Phoenix - This is a Ms. Marvel figure that cost about $1.25 compared to very expensive Phoenix figures.
This is a painting tutorial on how to make this figure:
Spoiler Alert!
With fingernail clippers, clip off some of the Skrull's chin.
Paint the entire figure green, except the face and hair.
Paint the gloves, leggings, and sash white.
Paint the gloves, leggings, and sash yellow.
Put a lime green wash over the entire figure, except for the face and hair.
Dry brush some yellow over the gloves, leggings, and sash.
Paint the face with a flesh color.
Put a thin bright red wash over the hair.
Paint two white almond shapes for the eyes.
Paint two burgundy arches for eyebrows.
Paint two black dots for pupils.
Paint a small thin bright red line for a mouth.
Paint a white triangle on the chest so that it points down and goes from shoulder to shoulder and down to the middle of her chest.
Paint the white triangle yellow.
Outline the yellow triangle black.
Paint two small black triangles on each side of the yellow triangle, so that they are pointing inward.
Using black and yellow paint, touch up the symbol on the chest to look like the phoenix symbol.
Dark Phoenix - This is also a Ms. Marvel figure.
Here is the painting Tutorial:

Last Night on Earth Heroes - This is my favorite board game that isn't Heroscape. But the minis are not painted when you buy it. Instead of creating lengthy tutorials on these figures, I am just gonna post them to be seen. But make note, that these were very difficult to paint and I put over an hour or two into each miniature.
Spoiler Alert!
BALLOONS - This is a bit off topic, I know, but I thought some of you might like seeing a bit of what I do for a living. I am a family entertainer and business owner. My wife and I rent bounce houses out, plan parties and events, paint faces, make balloons, etc. Last night, after getting home from a 10 hour work day, I was hyping myself up about the Avengers movie and so I started making some balloons that kids often ask for:
Spoiler Alert!
Thor
Iron Man
Captain America
Hulk
Spider-Man
Batman
Robin
Superman
Flash
Green Lantern
VENOM
GENERIC PRINCESS
General Zod - This is pretty darn easy. I took a Kryptonian Soldier from the recent Superman set, and painted certain parts of his clothing black, then painted his hair black. For the eyebrows, this takes some skill, but you want a very sharp tip on your brush. What I do is take a clean brush, wet it a little bit with water, then roll it around between my lips and make a very fine/sharp tip. Poke the tip in the black paint and do very small arches above the eyes. The pulling away from the center of his top lip, I make a small thin line on each side for his mustache. Then do a triangle on the chin for the beard and fill in the rest by making larger triangles on the cheeks. I think used silver to touch up his shoulder pads and painted upside triangles on the lapels of his shirt. Easy.
Spoiler Alert!
Guy Gardner - This is an old pic of an old custom, and you can see where the paint is wearing off around the hands and face (I didn't seal this figure, and I obviously should have). But for this design, I used the body of Ray (Heroclix) and the head of Doc Samson (Heroclix: Xplosion set). I painted the entire body black. Then painted the jacket, boots, and stripes on the legs green. Then paint the gloves white. For the face, I painted it all a base flesh color, then painted the hair and eyebrows orange.
Spoiler Alert!
Whiplash from Iron Man II - After all these years of Heroclix giving us wave after wave of comic character figures, still no Whiplash. When Iron Man II was released, did they give us a mini then? No. I don't think Heroclix will ignore it's fans' need for a good Whiplash forever, but until they give him to us, I am gonna represent with my own.
I took a Henchman figure and cut off his gun and head. I put on the head of Thunderbird on him. I took a Hawk figure and cut two ropes from his cape (you 6 ropes per cape) then drilled small holes in the hands to place and glue the ropes into. I then took plastic coated speaker wire and glued two pieces running from the belt buckle, up to the shoulders, then to the wrists. The last piece was a small plastic disc from the top of a robots head from Star Wars minis, but you can get that piece from pretty much anything. I glued that piece to the center of his chest.
I painted the torso and face flesh color and all of the mechanical parts black, including the whips, gloves, boots, and belt. I painted the pants white, then a nice thick coat of neon orange. I painted the hair brown. I painted the whips Metallic Blue, then ran some silver and white into them. I also painted the chest reactor metallic blue with white and silver. I then painted his stubble beard light gray. Once all that was done, I took a very small brush and just made little shapes all over for tattoos.
Spoiler Alert!
The Dark Knight Joker - I love the Dark Knight by Christopher Nolin. It is easily my all time favorite film. One of the reasons so many people love that film is the Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker. I personally believe that his rendition of the character is the best version I have ever experienced in any form of media, including the comics. Unfortunately, Heroclix was temporarily out of business when the movie was released, so it didn't get the miniatures based on the film like Captain America and Green Lantern did. So I went ahead and made my own custom.
For this custom, you need 3 miniatures to modify: The Joker with the fish guns, Scourge (an all white coated marvel figure), and The Question. Remove the Joker's head and remove the Question's head. Glue Joker's head on the Question's body. Remove the right arm from the Question by just pulling it off and cut the peg that is attached to it off. then re-glue it back on but change its positioning so that he can hold a gun level and horizontally. Cut off Scourge's Tommy Gun and shave the handle down so that you can place it in the Joker's right hand and paint the backside black and silver. But before you do, cut off the thumb of the right hand so that you have a small but level surface to glue to. Paint the undershirt light blue. Paint the vest green. Paint the coat and pants purple. Paint the tie purple. Paint the face flesh tone then stroke on in stripes (not the entire face) thin white paint. Paint thin black circles around the eyes and with a very small brush stroke away from the point of the eye where it meets the bridge of the nose and paint little black lines going away from that point. Then paint the red smile very thin at first and bringing it all the way up almost to the black eye makeup. Then make it a bit thicker in the center. Create a couple of scars on the side by making very small intersecting lines on the end of the smile. Paint the hair very lightly black, then again with a flat sage green.

2 Story Warehouse - I got this idea from Agent Minivan (thanks for the inspiration). I have tutorial coming out on how to make and paint this soon with C3G's newest group the Terrain Makers. For now though, I hope you can enjoy the picture.
Spoiler Alert!
BATMAN (KNIGHTFALL) - Another expensive figure that I decided to try and create was the Batman figure from the Knightfall story where Bruce Wayne got his back broken and then hired Jean Paul Valley to take his place. This figure is an amalgam of many bits and pieces, and I will try to recall each piece to the best of my ability. Start with a Prowler figure and snap his head and cape off. Remove that head and save it for later. Take a Nighthawk figure and remove his head and cape, then remove the cape and glue it onto the Prowler's body. Glue Prowler's head onto the new cape. You need two identical Batman figures, I used the one standing on the gargoyle head. cut off 3 triangle from Batman's cape, and glue one on the chest and the other two on the boots of the Prowler figure. Cut the Batman figures' waists off and drill with a very small drill into the center of the lower half of the figure until the utility belt is hollow, then cut of the utility belts and wrap them on either side of the Prowler's waist and glue them into place. Cut or snap off one of the small black squares of the many teeth of a Heroclix base (you will have to separate the wheel from the dial first). Glue this small square onto the center of the triangle on the chest. Cut two more small triangles from the cape and shave them down carefully with a razor until they have the look of ears on Batman's cowl (actual Batman ears from the previous scrap Batman figures are not big enough to work with). Apply the ears to the top of Prowler's head.
Spoiler Alert!
Now it is time to paint. Paint the entire figure black except for the cape, mask, and chest piece, paint those pieces metallic blue. Paint the eyes red. If you mess up on the red and get it on the face, do not worry, when it dries, you can just touch up the face with metallic blue later. Paint the chest plate beneath the cape yellow, along withe the belt and the square on top of the cape. Paint the claws and the spikes on the legs silver. Then paint the gauntlets around the forearms metallic blue.
Spoiler Alert!
SPIRAL - I am not paying 40 bucks for a figure, and I really like Spiral, so I had to do something. I took an extra Typhoid Mary (40 cents) and cut the top of her head off and glued down a helmet I got from a miniature bin at a game store for like 3 cents. I then hacked off the arms of two Katana figures and glued them on the sides. Then I painted the clothes metallic purple.
Spoiler Alert!
GIGANTA - This Heroclix figure is expensive as well, so I found the HorrorClix figure "50 Foot ExGirlfriend" for 75 cents. I painted the torn shirt black and her dress and bra yellow, then gave it black leopard spots.
Spoiler Alert!
ORACLE - Not only is the Heroclix Oracle expensive, it is also nearly impossible to find. Here I took a Professor X and cut his upper body off and glued down the upper body of Cheetah in his place. I cut Cheetah's cat ears off and painted her hair burgundy. Then I painted her shirt green. I then cut a long rectangle of clear yellow plastic from some Nesquick container. I cut small squares off of that rectangular strip and glued them together to make the lap top. Then I glued the head of a small Star Wars droid under her left hand and then cut her left hand at the wrist and reglued it so that it rested nicely on the "control". I then painted the laptop and edges black, but left the screen transparent. Then I carefully painted a small alien head on the front. After that, I just used some silver to paint some little details on the chair.
Spoiler Alert!
FROST GIANT - After seeing Thor the movie, I really wanted a bunch of Ice Trolls for a Jotunheim scenario, but alas, the Heroclix figures are way too expensive. Seeing as how I have several of the Trolls from the DnD master set, I decided to paint him up proper. I painted his skin light blue, then sloppily washed the entire thing with a dark blue twice. Easy.
Spoiler Alert!
VIXEN - This was one of my very first repaints so it isn't "all that" but it does look better than the official Clix figure IMO. Vixen has one very ugly figure from Heroclix, and I wanted a figure that looked a bit more like the cartoon. So I took an extra Cheetah from Icons that I had (I bought a lot of clix at once and she is common so she cost me about 20 cents). I cut the hair at shoulder length and cut off the tail and ears. Then I painted her yellow completely. Then I took my time painting where all of her skin should be and I painted her hair black. For a bit more detail I painted a thin orange belt and lines where she may zip up her boots, then I painted her necklace and earrings.
Spoiler Alert!
HUSH - This may be hard for some of you to commit to, and only I could do it because I own several Marvel Master Sets. I also had an extra Hired Gun guy so I cut off Red Skull's hands at the wrist and did the same to the Hired gun. I then glued it to Red Skull's wrists. I painted the entire overcoat and gloves brown, and the pants black. Then I painted the guns silver. I took a drop of Elmer's glue and pushed it into his face to cover up with details of Red Skull's teeth and eyes, so that it looks less like a skull and more like a mask.... with lots of horizontal brush strokes. Then I made black slits for the eyes and mouth, and then white dots for the eyes. Painting bright red trim wherever "feels right" on the chest will help establish his "look". Then wash the entire thing in black.
Spoiler Alert!
HUGO STRANGE - This one is easy and it isn't. Replacing Batman's head with Blue Beetle's head is easy; just cut and paste. Painting the head and face of Blue Beetle just right takes some skill and steady hands. Paint the entire head flesh colored. Then paint a thin black beard going from one ear to the next. Go back over the beard line several times until you get the thickness the way you want it. Paint a small triangle on the chin. For the eyebrows, I recommend the happy meal method. That is where you paint an "M" like from McDonalds across the brow, then paint the center of it flesh over top so that it becomes two eye brows. Then paint the goggles copper. TIP/HINT: For painting details, it is very important that you use a paint brush that has a very small and pointy tip. Also, never put too much paint on the brush, just a very small amount and go back for more paint often. And bracing your elbows on the table or into your sides can help to avoid shaky arms.
Spoiler Alert!
SANDMAN - Sandman is a Golden Age Hero from DC's The Justice Society. He has a great looking Heroclix figure, but it is too expensive for me. So, I took a 10 cent Question and cut off the head. Then I cut the Hat off of the head. Then I cut of the head of a 40 cent Parademon Drill Sergent. Then I cut the top of the Drill Sergent's head off and glued the Hat down. Then placed the new head on the Question's body. Then I took a cape that I had in my custom figure "bits bag" (I think the cape once belonged to Black Fire) and glued the cape on. I also got a small gun from my bits bag. I believe the gun was from an Intergang Agent. I think the only thing I painted was the green suit under the overcoat.
Spoiler Alert!
STORM - I really wanted a more traditional black suit Storm but the only one on the market that I liked was too expensive for my taste, so I decide to make one. This was originally a 40 cent Shadow Lass figure, and all I did was paint the entire thing flat black, then the details. After getting a solid black base coat, I painted her face brown, then the trim around her cape yellow, and also the lightning bolt on her chest. Then I painted her hair White along with two simple dots for eyes. You could probably put a lot more detail in this custom, but I really didn't want to spend much time painting that day, and this was really easy to do.
Spoiler Alert!
PUNISHER - This Punisher is from the Handful of Heroes set. I primed the figure with white and then painted the suit navy blue. After doing that, I went ahead and painted all the details of the head, weapons, boots, gloves, etc. For the gun, I painted it silver then washed it with a metallic blue. After all that was done, I gave the figure the old Lord Pyre "oil wash". I wanted to have the figure maintain the classic Punisher look, but I found the bright white gloves and boots kinda silly looking. So I washed it all with black (except for the face). I put a lot of black wash on the suit and let it dry, then did it again, and just before the second coat dried, I took a wet brush and "painted" or wiped off some excess black to get that comic style of blue and black representing black and shadows on material.
Spoiler Alert!
M.O.D.O.K. - MODOK is another figure that is quite expensive, but if you are like me, you have to have a figure for every C3G custom, and since I like making customs and saving tons of money, I rather enjoyed making this figure. I am gonna over this in several stages, but the end result will look like this:
Spoiler Alert!
Quote:
Phase 1 - Cut an action figure's head so that it will fit into a soda bottle cap. I used a California Raisin, but use whatever you can find.
Phase 2 - Cut a strip of paper that you can roll and place into the bottle cap. Make sure that the paper is the right size to complement your figure's head. then drip, drizzile, pour, and roll super glue down the paper and into the cap and let it sit. This should make the paper pretty tough and sorta plastic like.
Phase 3 - You can either base the bottle cap directly or do what I did and put a much smaller piece beneath it to elevate it. I used a flower pot from a Doll House accessories pack. Then glue it all together. After the glue has had about half a day to dry, go over the entire thing with a pasty orange paint.
Phase 4 - You need normal size arms and legs to make them look very small on this figure because the head is so big. I cut off the limbs of a Hawk figure that I had previously cut the cape off of and used for testing different paints.
Phase 5 - Paint the head flesh tone, then glue the arms and legs on how you want them.
Phase 6 - Cut a small band of paper and glue it to the forehead and paint it purple along with the arms and legs. Paint the eyes black.
Step 7 - Remove the inner wheel from a Heroclix base and save the outer shell. Drill into the flat side of the shell and continue to drill and cut around the shell until all you have left is a ring around the edge of the shell with all the little teeth on it - this ring should be glued onto the collar. Take off one the teeth from the base by breaking it off or cutting it. Then glue it to the center of the head band. Paint small white dots for eyes and a small purple dot in the center of the head band's center piece. Paint some brown hair and you're done.
KILOWOG - You can make this figure in two different ways; you can use the lower body of Venom (Handful of Heroes) and the upper body of Ironclad (Handful of Heroes) and just paint, or you can do the same thing then shave Ironclad's face off and replace it with just about any type of orc face you can find and afford to cut off. The orc face that I used was from some type castle siege game that came with really cheap blue and green plastic/rubber minis of Knights and Orcs. But just about any orc will do.
To Paint, first paint everything with a primer, as HoH figs are slick shiny plastic. I use an outdoor matte purple spraypaint for all of mine. Then paint the figure black except for the head and neck. then paint the green parts of the suit and the white gloves. For the GL insignia, paint a white circle, then a green circle in the center. Then paint a green horizontal line on top of the green circle and at the bottom. Then to finish it, put a tiny white dot right in the middle. Paint the face and neck a slightly tan skin tone then wash with a bright pink. Put down a white oval on its side for both eyes and then a black dot in the center.
Spoiler Alert!
WITH THE MODIFIED FACE
APOCALYPSE - This was originally a Brainiac figure (the yellow and purple one with all the tentacles). I cut the tentacles off, attached two to his wrists and waist, painted the figure blue, flat blue, and metallic blue, painted the head flesh colored, then his facial features in detail. All in all, this figure cost me about 80 cents and an hour of my time. Sorry for the bad pic, I am a noob.
Spoiler Alert!
RULK - I know it has been done before, but it is still cool, and I have had this guy for a couple of years now. Basically you take a Hulk figure from the Heroscape Marvel master set and paint the all of the skin red, the pants regal blue, and the hair black. Then create a dark red wash (almost brown looking as a wash). Wash all the skin and let it fill in every nook and cranny that you can find, but if it starts to get on his pants, all you have to do is take a dry brush and touch the wet spots to soak it up and off (this is called wicking). Then create a baby blue thin wash to go on the pants. After that, dry brush the pants with a slightly lighter blue than the base coat, but only do this on the knees, back pockets, and waist band to get a torn and tattered look with an acid wash style on the jeans. Then paint the hair black and your done.
Spoiler Alert!
GRULK - Again, this is simple but fun. Take your Hulk from the Marvel Master Set and paint the entire thing medium gray. Then paint the pants and hair black. Then wash the entire thing in a dark gray. And lastly, dry brush the paints with light gray on its stress points - knees, back pockets, and waste band.
Spoiler Alert!
ANGEL - This is a Handful of Heroes figure from Walmart. I didn't want to pay 7 bucks for the Clix figure, so I bought this guy and he cost me about $1 if you divide the cost of the figure pack by the amount of figures you receive. Painting his clothing can be very difficult as it is hard to see his clothing line, so what I did was give him a double primer in white, and then a black wash to find all the lines and crevices. After that I painted the wings gray and then washed them with a dark gray and then a very thin black. The head is difficult to do if it is your first time, but the biggest tip I can give on the eyes is to paint the head blue, then two white dots for the eyes, then two very tiny black dots for pupils, and then the dark yellow eye brows.
Spoiler Alert!
ABSORBING MAN - Another cheap Handful of Heroes mini. I gave him several flesh tone primers. Then the rest was honestly very easy to paint.
Spoiler Alert!
IRON MAN MARK II - A very paint job. This HoH mini basically just needs a gold coat and then for fun, I made a gold wash with a light touch of dark green in it to make the suit look tarnished. Yeah I know, the gold shouldn't tarnish, but it was fun making the suit look old. Then I put a double crystal gloss finish over the figure.
Spoiler Alert!
GLADIATOR HULK - I bought this figure at Walmart in a package of figures called "Handful of Heroes". They cost like 5 bucks and you get 7 figures. They are unpainted and are solid clear plastic, but the actual sculpts are great. I gave him a lime green primer, then mixed a bit of swampy green in with that and gave him a lite coat, then a dark green wash over that. The rest is pretty straight forward, except the last step. I usually don't put blood on my figures, but I wanted to see some old dried blood on this guy, so I took a red and mixed in a very small touche of brown and then took a wide flat brush with a bit on the end and just ran my finger across it so that it splattered in lines across the axe and body.
Spoiler Alert!
ALFRED PENNYWORTH - Alfred is an expensive figure, costing up to 60 bucks for the very rare, and 10 bucks for the rare. So what I did here was take a Joker figure that costs 50 cents (the one with the tux and the fish guns) and then a Batman figure that also cost 50 cents. I shaved down Jokers hair, cut his arms at the joints, shave the angles of the joints, reglued them so that his arms were in the posistion that I needed, then painted him from head to toe. The most difficult thing to paint is his little mustache, but just keep on trying until you get the way you want it. If you mess it up, just paint back over it with some flesh color and try again. (you can't really mess up with paint, because you can always try again). Then I took the cape and cowl off of the batman figure and cut the cowl off of the cape. Then I carved and shaved the cape down so that it hangs off of Alfreds arm and just barely touches the base. Then glue it all together and presto! You have an Alfred figure that only cost you 1 dollar and an hour of time.
Spoiler Alert!
NICK FURY - This guy was also from "Handful of Heroes" at Walmart. He cost me less than a dollar and his paint job isn't that difficult. Give him a royal blue primer then a light coat of navy blue. Paint the trim in white, paint his face white, his hair grey, then the top part of his hair brown, then paint a small white dot for his eye, a smaller black dot inside of that, a tiny black line for an eyebrow, then his patch.
Spoiler Alert!
IRON MAN MARK I - From "Handful of Heroes" at Walmart, this guy is easy. Paint him completely silver several times, then create a copper wash to go over him. Then put a crystal finish over him completely for that shine.
Spoiler Alert!
WAR MACHINE - Take an extra Marvel Scape Iron Man and paint him black. Take some guns from any scraps or other figures you have (you can even glue together some plastic pieces from just about anything and makes some guns) I used Star Wars mini figures. The glue them onto the figure the way you want them. Then paint the whole thing black again. Then paint the details silver. Then give it all a black-silver wash. After all that, give it a crystal clear finish.
Spoiler Alert!
DEADPOOL - From the "Handfull of Heroes" at Walmart, Deadpool is a cheap 1 dollar figure compared to the expensive one from Heroclix. Paint him red then give him black trim and two white dots for eyes. If you want to, paint the guns with a metallic black.
Spoiler Alert!
THING - Also from "Handful of Heroes" at walmart, this one dollar fig looks better than any of the clix options IMO. Paint him orange, then paint him a different shade of orange, then again, and again. It doesn't matter what shades you use or what order, it is gonna look great no matter. After that, give him a medium to dark brown wash and fill in all those rocky cracks. This really looks great in hand. Then paint the shorts.
Spoiler Alert!
BEAST - From "Handful of Heroes" at Walmart, paint this guy royal blue, then paint his mouth red. Then paint a thin white line at the top and bottom of his mouth for the teeth, then his eyes and nails. Lightly dry brush his chest and fur with a light regal blue and before it dries, take a wet clean brush and wipe some of the paint off. Also do this to the pads of his feet. For the terrain below, paint it a flat medium brown then give it a hunter green dry brushing.
Spoiler Alert!
SENTINEL - This is a 6 inch Iron Man action figure from target. Pose him the way you want him to be, then use TONS of super glue in all of his joints and wait a full day for it to dry. Then take him outside and spray paint him with silver or purple. Once it dries, use metallic blue, silver, purple, etc, to fill in the details as you so choose.
Spoiler Alert!
CARNAGE - Take an Extra Venom from the Marvel Scape master set and then cut strings of crooked, twisted, and sharp pieces of plastic from just about anything. I used the cape off of an extra Hawk figure's cape, and also some milk carton plastic. Piece and glue them on as you want them to be, then paint the whole thing bright red. Then run a black paint brush in wild patters then do the same thing with an even smaller red paint brush. After that, platter some white all around.
Spoiler Alert!
ICEMAN - This is a Heroclix figure, but he comes from the factory as all clear blue. I painted some yellow shorts on him (don't want to see his icicle ), then create a thick white wash to go over the entire figure. Don't be afraid to really let it clump on either.
Spoiler Alert!
COLOSSUS - From "Handful of Heroes" at Walmart, this guy comes with him hold a giant piece of earth. I cut his hands off at his wrists then put Venom's (from the same set of figures) hands in his place with some glue. Paint this guy silver, then paint his costume red and yellow, Then the details of his hair and face. Then give him a black wash over everything. After that, give him a crystal clear finish to make him look like metal.
Spoiler Alert!
UNDEAD FLAG BEARER - This guy is a bunch of pieces from lot of different scraps from different games.
Spoiler Alert!

Cool stuff, Griff! I did a similar thing to my Iceman, I didn't use a wash, though, I did a drybrush. Yours looks a bit more "snowy," while mine looks more icy. I almost want to do that to my Iceman, now, hehe!
And I wondered about that Deadpool. How's the scale on him? It's a good looking figure, but I always thought the Handful of Heroes packs were generally a bit bigger then 'Scape size.
Cool stuff man! I gotta find that Handful of Heroes pack, some nice stuff there. What is with the two bases for the Sentinel though?
Using two bases is a great way of basing Large or Huge figures without using a peanut base or double base. The two bases are separated to exactly match the length of a double base btw.

Yeah, I was going for snowy as that was how the original Iceman was drawn. Glad you liked him. I really just wanted to cover up his naked crotch and a white wash alone would not have been..... appropriate.
