Wink 400 Point Mini-Tournament Armies

Hello folks, long time no see. My first year of public school teaching has been all consuming and I regret not having the time to stay in touch.

I was hoping to tap some brains regarding a little project I am working on. I am thinking about running a mini-tournament of Heroscape that will take place at a LARP event that I am throwing early next year.

There is not enough time for a true tournament as there are dozens of other things that need to be packed into the day, but as there are other people in the LARP (my usual gaming crew and beyond) that 'scape, and as I think it’s a good way to introduce 'scape to others, I did want to have it there in some format.

My thought was a abbreviated tournament. In that tournament I would have six or eight pre-made 400 point armies which I feel are well balanced against one another. Entrants would have to choose from one of my armies.

Entrants would play in pairs on a single map in a bracket-system. Every game would be limited to 6 rounds, the goal being to kill more total points than your opponent does.

Of course, I welcome all input on the format of the tournament to help me make it a more efficient process, but I was really hoping to get recommendations for some 400 point armies to put together that have worked for you in the past.
My other request is that the armies be heavily themed.

I appreciate any banter.

Here is what I have so far, these are all subject to change or deletion.

Team Bad Moon Rising:
Anubian wolves x2: 150
Khosumet the Darklord: 75
Wolves of Badru x2: 160

Team Blue to the Bone:
Arrow Gruts x2: 80
Swog Rider X2: 50
Heavy Gruts x2: 140
Tornak: 100

Team Bushido Blade:
Tagawa Samurai Archers: 65
Kozuke Samurai: 100
Ninjas of the Northern Wind: 110
Kaemon Awa: 120

6 RoTV, 3 SotM, 3 RttFF, 3 FotA, 3 VW, 3 TT, 3 TJ.
At least 3 of every common, 1 of every unique.

Re: 400 Point Mini-Tournament Armies

Heavy on theme, and similarly competitive to the ones listed so far (in my opinion):

Kato: 200
Ashigaru x2 x2: 200

Nakita Agents: 120
Gorillinators x2: 180
Agent Carr: 100

Drones x8: 400

Aubrien Archers x3: 210
Syvarris: 100
Emirroon: 80

Charos/Braxas: 210
Zelrig/Nilfheim: 185

Good to see you back around. Are there plans for a Rise of the Huskies tournament next year?

EDIT. Another couple:

Knights of Weston x2: 140
Gilbert: 105
Dupuis: 150

Groks x2: 260
Ne-Gok-Sa: 90
Me-Burq-Sa: 50

Thanks for the quick reply Ollie,

Saturday March 21, 2009 is the next Rise of the Husky. I have it on the books here at UCONN already.

Re: 400 Point Mini-Tournament Armies

160 Su-Bak-Na
120 Nagrubs x3
120 Stingers x2
400

A +1 to Stinger Drain isn't all that great, and healing one of SBN's wounds, protected by only 3 defense, isn't so good ether. Still, this army has good attack potential, with the possibility of 4-4-4 or 7-2-2-2 if the Heroscape gods favor you.

140 Aubriens x2
150 Warriors of Ashra x3
110 Acolarh
400

Time for Acolarh to shine, now that Sonlen, Ulginesh, Syvarris, Arkmer, and... uh... pretty much every other elf in Heroscape can't steal his rightful glory as the center the elf army revolves around.

190 Red Skull
075 James Murphy
065 Shotgun Sullivan
060 Deadeye Dan
390

All gunslingers!

160 MacDirk Warriors x2
080 Finn
080 Thorgrim
030 Eldgrim
050 Tarn Vikings
400

Pretty obvious how this theme army is going to play. Nice how it fits together right at 400, though.

180 Blastatrons x3
130 Deathwalker 8000
090 Warden 816
400

Can't say I've ever tried to attack the enemy with 6-move Blastatrons using only themselves as homing devices. I... guess it might work?

150 Cyprien
130 Kee-Mo-Shi
120 Runa
400

Cyprien plus the 250 pounds of strongly-themed dead weight he has to hang around his neck to have a chance of getting in the door at this power level.

Re: 400 Point Mini-Tournament Armies

I'm a big fan of "Team Bad Moon Rising" and "Team Blue to the Bone". Ollie's first two (Kato+Ashigaru and Agents+Gorillas) and last one (Groks+Marro Warlords) are perfect. I really like Templarmaster's second one - the elf wizard posse is great for this sort of tournament. I also like rdhight's first one (SBN+grubs+stingers) and his MacDirk build.

That's eight armies with no overlap, but I'll make a suggestion just for the heck of it:

200 Sacred Band x4
90 Parmenio
110 Valguard (disciplined influence)
400

Re: 400 Point Mini-Tournament Armies

Ok, I'll start with Q9(Though, for a tournament like this, he might not work). Q9 should have a melee screen. For that task, I chose Krug. We are now at 300 points. I could choose the Krav to round things out, but that would be OVERKILL! So, I'll choose Morsbane. Q9 can be replaced by Crixus+NGS if necessary. Let us know how things work out! Krug can also be replaced with Runa.

Your curiosity will be the death of you....

Re: 400 Point Mini-Tournament Armies

This is very similar to an event that a friend an I are going to run in the near future to introduce the game to new folks. I'll be following this thread for more ideas!

That said, how 'bout showing Taelord a little love?
2x Minions - 220
Taelord - 400

Returns for more.
