Here's something most painters wouldn't understand: not only can't I paint to save my life even attempting to do so is so painful it's literally torture to me. I've tried and it was horrible. To hijack a line from Jack Benny, if someone aimed a gun at me and said, 'Paint these miniatures or your life!' I'd wait a long time and reply, 'I'm thinking it over.'

However they don't need to be painted. They just need to be in color. Tell me the miniatures are in colored plastic like the AOTP squads, which I loved just fine with no paint at all. Anything other than dull, drab, lifeless grey miniatures are no problem for me. Tell me they are in colored plastic and I'm in.

(Sidebar: I think common Heroclix look just fine. My standards for paint as someone who despises doing it myself enormously are apparently not very high. That may play into my willingness to just have units in general colored plastic and be done with it. However I still refuse to use lifeless and ugly grey miniatures.)

The HeroQuest minis and furniture are colored in different plastics for the different types of figures, Heroes, Undead, etc...

They didn't plan to do that initially, they showed all the minis and furniture in the same color. But they changed it during the Haslab campaign, I think it was something fans were requesting.

I would prefer that to all of them being one color for HeroScape too.

Exactly. I wouldn’t call a giant mono colored gray in the mix with the rest of my figures “backwards compatible”. Will totally stick out like a sore thumb and look less official than most customs. For how community oriented they are being, it’s a real bummer to see one of the defining qualities of heroscape to be drained of life. Since I don’t need any more terrain, I can’t imagine this master set being very useful. Just a handful of fantastic miniatures that look like my inner thigh for what I imagine will be fairly expensive. I would totally pay more for painted miniatures. I would rather they spent the money on paint instead of a dragon alien bigger than my femur.

Still going to buy because heroscape lol

Yeah its hard to pinpoint who this is for
Old fans need quality, not quantity. Id be okay if all they released was a set of 6 fully painted medium figures for 30 dollars with no terrain
However, new players need quantity and this won't have that. We've only seen 8 figures so far plus a new player isn't going to have the sentimental factor encouraging them to buy the unpainted figures. This isn't a good entry point for newbies, used ROTV from ebay is still king in that regard
This set has neither high volume nor high production

If the modern day economic factors are preventing a painted master set even of the size of Battle for the Underdark, then can Heroscape truly be done correctly in the modern day?

No matter how reasonable the behind the scenes explanations are, if the product doesn't provide the value players want then people will not participate

I'm waiting for more information with cautious optimism, but when I first heard the announcement I told all my friends about it and they were excited, yet when I learned it was unpainted I felt a little embarrassed telling my friends about that part after my initial response

The number of people for whom unpainted minis is a dealbreaker is, not to bash on anyone in particular, completely insane.
