Still DVD waiting on Endgame and Far From Home, and haven't had a chance to get my family together to see Captain Marvel yet. Black Panther's been out a while, though - surprised you haven't seen it.

Captain Marvel felt not great to me. Black Panther I loved.

Captain Marvel's pretty good. Nick Fury totally stole the show, though. Not as good as it was hyped to be though.

Panther isn't my absolute favorite hero, so when we missed seeing it in theaters we haven't been in a rush to watch it. That's it. We mention it now and again, but we have lots of other things to watch too so it doesn't hit top of the list. I'm sure the Ant Man films would be in a similar state if we hadn't seen them in theaters.

I don't get the love for it honestly. I was really excited by the hype and wanted to like it, but it felt dull and joyless to me, along with other, more specific criticisms.
The Ant-Man films I both loved.

I enjoyed it from an academic perspective as someone who knows quite a bit about Western colonialism.

Also there were lots of pretty colors and a pretty compelling villain.

Captain Marvel's use of SHIELD in general was pretty good. Her character arc just felt needlessly condensed and generic, though. I wanted to know her more as a person, and it just didn't seem to be there.

Ant Man films were good yeah. I just won't get excited for a specific "Ant Man" film because... you know... He's Ant Man.

I'd see pretty much every film ever in theater if I possibly could, but I can't, and I have priorities then. BP just isn't at the top.

Danvers herself felt a bit flat, yeah. I think they said they want her to carry the Avengers franchise going forward, so want to see more.

Cinematographically it was pretty, I'll grant (save the initial fight scene, which I could barely make out with my 20/20 vision - my less visually acute Mum and brother didn't stand a chance). I get the academic interest, but I feel as though their focus wasn't necessarily in the right place for that. Also... I go into a Marvel film with certain expectations, and one of them is a certain degree of humour, of having a fun time and not taking itself too seriously, even when effectively telling a serious story. I didn't get that here, at all. It's near the bottom of my Marvel rankings. If DC had put it out I'd likely have been more impressed. (Also, I didn't feel Killmonger was given time to be that compelling, IMO - interesting concept, fairly one-note execution, though I'll grant that the heart-shaped herb hallucination scene for him was well-done.)
Plus, I just have to share this, but as someone who knows quite a bit about mythology, having a central African invoke Hanuman pissed me off righteously. Hanuman is an Indian god - it makes about as much geographic sense as someone from the steppes invoking Odin. For a film that clearly wanted to be seen as culturally sensitive (which is a good thing, IMO), that level of 'it sounds foreign so it'll do' is bloody irritating. Surely you could have found something better?
(Bast never bothered me so much - Egypt is closer and worship of gods does migrate - but Hanuman just felt like it was asking me to gloss over too much.)

I thought Black Panther was decent. I personally enjoyed it being less borderline slapstick comedy than most MCU movies. It falls into the same trap as Aquaman/ Namor stuff tends to though, where you have everything work exactly like the real world except somehow there was this secret society of hyper advanced dudes who've been around for ages but only now are having issues with stuff that's been happening just as long. Black Panther handled that better than most though. It's at least a more complex issue they're dealing with instead of 'stop polluting our home we never told you existed with technology we could have easily offered you replacements for'.


Captain Marvel was just... aggressively mediocre to me. Like it was there, it existed, they apparently decided that was enough and didn't feel the need to like, do anything interesting during the film.

Yeah I tend to hate any sort of secret superior society. Like the Inhumans? Those guys are just tools.

Best part of Capt. Marvel might have been the cat, really surprised no one has thrown a card idea out for it yet.

If there's ever a cat in anything, there's a good chance it's the best part.
