Re: Soldiers of Valhalla - nominations and discussion
Really dig where you landed with Phoah. Cool design.

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla - nominations and discussion
Phoah Ra is terrifying without being overpowered. I love it. And I already was a big fan of the priestess and bought the mini for it quite some time ago

Phoah Ra's synergy feels forced, given the Crypt Guardian's Royal Escort, but then you didn't have a lot of choice with a male figure given that power's restrictions. But that doesn't make it feel good. Having both Royal Escort and Crypt Guardian Movement Bonding makes the faction look poorly-designed (which, honestly, it is, which happens when a faction is made piecemeal). Still, I like the restrained approach taken here, with the Crypt Guardians made to improve a melee Paralyzing Stare. The overall mediocrity of the unit enhances Cursed Spirit, making it a real choice whether to ignore Phoah or suffer his spirit. Ultimately, though, I think making the unit a King is a mistake. The mediocrity I praised feels unfitting for a king with a crazy magic-y look. Simply making the unit a higher-class Guard, like an elite Crypt Guardian, feels like what you are really trying for here, and it would solve the Royal Escort problem. to review Phoah Ra Priestess Aculanda simply doesn't have a chance with me personally because of the mini. One of my favorite things the original designers did was make each faction of kyrie distinctly different versions of "winged humans." The demonic-like kyrie of Utgar, the metallic winged warriors of Jandar, the natural broad white wings of the Ullar musclemen, etc. This mini will only be an Ullar kyrie for me (or one like Tyrian that is a loaner).* Make her Ullar and I'm interested. Cyclonic Gust and Aquilla's Blessing are both good, but the weak attack makes it hard to really justify the cost or order markers. Hard to tell without actually playing her. I do have some reservations about a guaranteed heal, but again, I would have to play her to really tell. to review Priestess Aculanda * For those that want to argue the Journal entry about them looking like birds, being far enough away to fail to distinguish a winged human from a bird means they weren't able make out any particular details. And if you still want to argue that insectoid wings still wouldn't fit, I'll demand matching the other, much more clearly-described Journal entry descriptor, that of reddish-brown skin. |

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla - nominations and discussion
Thank you
@Captain Stupendous
, I'm glad.
There are 14 of the Mummy lord on ebay and 2 higher brand sellers with "more than 10 available". Otherwise currently it seems to be out of stock on most other typical sites. I believe there should be more produced though, having released only 1 year ago. The Aasimar wizard has 20+ on Miniaturemarket, 23 on ebay, noble knight -8, and unknown various quantities on plenty of other sites. Yes, the wings are translucent. Deep Reddish-Brown* skin. My slight inaccuracy on that detail, as it has been a while since I've referenced the material. Returning to, they mention three tall kyrie "Garbed in animal skins and bird feathers". And a reference of black hair. ~Chapter Four of Thormun's Journal: Swarm of the Marro - Journal Entry #45 I reiterate, the skin color of the face is an easy modification to make if it’s important to someone. Entry 46 is unreadable, entry 47 continues.. *A white robe with golden trim (Something I now associate with aquillan fashion, seen on the Aculanda model and other aquillan customs of mine) is given to Sgt. D.A. while his uniform is washed and patched*. I find it silly to cling to an unfounded detail like the bug wings and give it leverage. Reserved feelings for automatic healing is fine, automatic wounds are fine, and exceptions are enjoved when they don't crack a system. It's the reason for her cost. A few relative play tests involved her inhibiting heroes like Siege or Concan with the Macdirks, but overall the cost of a turn against an equal army wasn't enough to dominate and the distance 4 range still requires some strategic positioning and risk. The elite crypt guardian is where the design for Phoah Ra is coming from. I view the Pharaoh mummy's magic appearance as possibly being the cursed spirit or what was previously a smite ability incorporated into '4' attack. I thought long and hard about his class as a king. I stand by it and could see it no other way with the Pharaoh (equivalent to King) model, which I have really enjoyed the presence of on the table. The mediocrity is due in part to being a "mummy" king, not a powerful Lich. Last edited by SchismaticSounds; June 28th, 2022 at 04:33 AM. |

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla - nominations and discussion
Aculanda - I vote no to review. That is a wall of text that doesn't seem in line with current cannon. Also lava dunking is a thing and repositioning can be very strong (even 1 space). It is weird the attacked figure is not affected..
Aculanda is also a very small figure so the wind gust does not fit as well. Healing is a strong mechanic that's why it typically has a die roll. It can be very annoying as well. You are paying for it in points and in game value due to the on reveal and weak attack. However that results it feeling tacked on, again not serving a strong design vision. I like ra more, but I want to take more time to decide my vote. |

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla - nominations and discussion
I think both designs are really close but not quite there.
Personally, I think the clear but "Ullar-shaped" wings are fine as Aquilla and I welcome this as an opportunity to start Aquilla Kyrie. I think the wing-shape focus is a little pedantic to be honest. Runa has very different wings from Taelord and Minions have red wings while the other two have Black. And the Ullar Kyrie have quite similar wings to the Jandar ones, to the point that VC has a repaint of an Ullar Kyrie as a Jandar Kyrie. However I'm voting on Aculanda because the design doesn't seem like it would play in an interesting way. It's kind of a grab bag of powers, the 5 range 2 attack, the heal, and the 10 or high move a figure roll. Similar to Sonlen but every power is worse. But the Cyclone has lava dunk potential which makes it potentially very good. Anyway, I guess I would rather see a stronger focus for the first Aquilla Kyrie, this design feels like it has a lot going on. Also voting on Phoah-Ra for a similar reason. I think this one is a little closer. I love the idea of a negative spirit. I like reusing paralyzing stare. But the combination of the three powers makes the card pulled in many directions. I agree that Crypt Guardian movement bonding feels a little bit overdesigned, and since it's the core of the card it weakens the design as a whole. I wonder if it would be a stronger design if it were just plain "Guard Movement bonding", with a creative name. Maybe even let him move 3 Guards. But this isn't a workshop thread for my ideas. I hope to see both of these back. 10 Years of Gencon/Scapecon Battle Reports - Comic Battle Reports - Probability Calculator App - Reverse the Whip Army Archetypes "It's all about the game." - Sgt.
