I hadn't really looked at NERV before because New England is quite a distance from the West Coast. But, I would like to help with setting up a ranking system and website. I know it will take a lot of planning, but this is the type of thing I like.

For some background information, I am pursuing a computer information systems (similar to IT) degree, and have already taken some web design classes and a database class (using MS Access.) I still have a lot to learn, but this would be a good learning opportunity as well as a chance to help the 'scapers community! Also, I have an "old" computer that I may be able to turn into a web server. I can't make any promises yet, because my parents might not like the idea of leaving a computer on 24/7, but my "old" computer is certainly powerful enough for the job.

That's great. Between everyone's various technical, theoretical and organisational competencies, this next stage could be pretty impressive.

I think at least as much of an issue as the functionality though, is the concept. Previous conversations on these boards have revealed significant antipathy to the idea of rankings. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Cool, glad we have another(I work in the IT field myself). I am in the beginning steps of setting up the database and web interface tools. I also have access to 2 servers at my office and Fiber that runs into the office. I might beable to use some of this to help make it happen.

First though the issue is setting up the Database and getting it rolling.

I am not sure what to do about this. Not everyone will want to be ranked, but I'm sure that there are enough people who would be interested. I think that there are enough people that would be interested that it could work. Plus, as more people start participating, the ranking system could grow exponentially.

Yeah - I feel the same way about those views as MM feels about ranged units.

As a culture, we're obsessed with ranking things. If we have rankings, and we do a technically competent job of formulating them and presenting them (which I'm confident we can) then they will get a lot of attention. And some people will loudly complain about how they are inaccurate, or how they promote a win-at-all-costs mentality, or any other number of issues. And despite this, the world will keep spinning, and people will keep talking about them and paying attention to them.

Personally I don't have much use for a ranking system. Probably because I am really not all that great of a player. In fact I have a new personal policy of NOT picking from the prize table (I do have my son pick though because he likes that part). That way I know I am just participating in the tournament for fun.

That being said I have to admit I do look at my NERV score after tournaments.

Cleon's winning 5-0 performance makes him the biggest climber, congratulations and welcome to the top ten! Also moving significantly upwards, by different amounts depending on their ingoing NERV and that of their opponents, are the eight players that lost only one game: Bengi, Chris (BatB2), Kildawabit, Ollie, Onacara, Pilgrim, TehFattestNinja and The Exegete. Stablest NERV award goes to Darkmage 7a: his NERV was 1268.3 going in and his 3-2 record "moves" him to 1268.3. RobertDD joins the club of those that have moved downwards despite a winning record: his 3-2 performance lost him 3 NERV points.

Truth be told I have only played about 3-4 games of Heroscape since Revelations, I hope I am not rusty for Slugfest

No. I think that 'scapers are mature enough to view these as a bit of fun on the side. Heroscape tournaments that I've attended were always laidback and I haven't noticed any increase in competitiveness since introducing the NERV. One thing that might spark some acrimony is if someone starts making graphs of the progress of various people. Like this:
