Scaper of the Week Interview #61

A rough and tough dude on the site, he's well known for his "lively" language and debates. His Blogspot is a welcome site for game reviews as well.

But for those who haven't met him personally, there's a secret. But of course you'll have read to see it!

Here's this week's Scaper;

-Scaper of the Week #61-

SuperflyTNT

Who are you?
Pete Ruth

Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?
My avatar is a nuclear blast, with a skull on it. Pretty obvious. It's because I welcome nuclear holocaust to rid the world of so many of the scumbags and people who have opinions based solely on ignorance.

Regarding my username, it comes from Pulp Fiction, obviously. I was named by a friend, in a roundabout way, when I shot a dragonfly out of the sky with an SKS rifle from 100 yards. It was luck, but he said, "Damn, that's SuperflyTNT, man. You blasted him!" That, or I make a perfect Tanqueray and Tonic; tastes just like a Christmas (or holiday...) Tree smells.

Age:
35
Occupation?
I'm a sales puke for a hazardous waste recycler; in fact, the largest in the Western Hemisphere. We're the opposite of Snapple: "We're made of some of the worst things on earth."

Allegiance and why?
That's a toughie. I'm going with Einar because I loves me some Samurai.

When did you get into HeroScape and why?
About 2 years ago, I was at Target and I saw 2 boxes of the Rise master set for $10 each. I had a gift card, so I got one. I got to the cashier and he noted that he wished he had one because it looked so cool and hadn't realized it was on sale. I gave him mine and told him to stash it, then I went back and got the second. In retrospect, I wish I'd have got both! It's a wicked cool game and still, after hundreds and hundreds of games, my all-time favorite.

Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?
The dice. I love dice, although they hate me. That, or because it's simple enough of a game to play with my chittlins, but complex enough that grown men can get into near-fistfights over determining line of sight. It's just about as perfect a light skirmish game as possible, and with such a wide variety of units from such a wide variety of genres, if you don't like it, you're simply a moron.

Favorite Unique Hero and why?
R˙chean. He has a shirt that says, "I am a Unique Hero." I agree. I love that guy like a brother, and he really has been such an immense, driving force behind making Heroscape what it is...no little plastic dude on a map can possibly top him. As to Heroscape, though, I love the Floppitycopter(TM), Theracus. He's easily the best "utility" hero in the game.

Favorite Uncommon Hero and why?
I'd say the Fen Hydra. They look cool, have a short pseudoranged attack, and generally whoop some ass. Love them guys.

Favorite Common Hero and why
Again, if you're a Hero, chances are you're not all that common these days. If I was pressed, I'd have to go with Dumutef Guards. They play well with some of my faves like the Anubians, Death Knights, and Retchets, so they're definately my chosen Common Heroes.

Favorite Unique Squad and why?
Without a doubt, it's the Izumi Samurai. I love them. They can sit and get shot in the face 20 times and survive, walk up on you and make you kill yourself with a Counterstrike. How superduper is that? Love 'em!

Favorite Common Squad and why?
I have so many favorites...I guess if I had to pick just one over all the others it would have to be the Anubian Wolves. They are so sneaky and luck-based that when they suck, BOY do they suck, but when you hit that magical 20, you can smoke 3 Unique Heroes in one turn. Awesome.

Favorite Special Ability and why?
Deathwalker 7K's Self Destruct. When you fly him over with Theracus and then have him walk into a crowd, there's nothing like the look on the opponent's face. It's sheer panic, dread, and terror. That, my friend, is the essence of Heroscape. Doing something unexpected and downright nasty to completely change the game for your opponent.

Anubian Wolves or Warforged Soldiers?
Wolves. 100%. Not only are they way cooler, when a Warforged dies, there's nothing but scrap metal (which I recycle, by the way) but when the Anubians die, you get wolfman meat for a week after the battle.

Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?
One: No game should ever be played with Partial Card Scoring. It's not in the rulebook, and it changes the game dynamic entirely.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
The forums are so wonderful because they're self-regulating. Aldin doesn't need to smack anyone because people pretty much keep others in line. It's really neat to watch. Also, I like the fact that you don't have text-chatting morons writing unintelligible crap...those people straighten up REALLY quickly after 10 posts of "dude, you're a moron". The other thing I love is watching people complain about neg-rep. It kills me laughing. I mean, seriously, how completely loathesome is your existence that you have to get all worked up about something that absolutely has no value in the real world. Comedy gold.

Favorite HeroScape moment:
Beating R˙chean fair-and-square once, at his own house. That was epic.

Another board game you enjoy and why?
It's easier for you to just go to The Superfly Circus and check the ratings there to know, but if I have to choose just one, it's El Grande. I love that game. It has almost no luck at all, and it's a thinking person's game. It's exceptional.

Three true things and one lie about yourself:
1. One of my best friends has Multiple Sclerosis and I continually refer to his poorly-working hands as his "Big Meaty Claws."
2. I was expelled 3 days before my 8th grade graduation for nearly killing a kid in a fight, and was subsequently charged with assault with a deadly weapon because I kicked him in the face.
3. I hold two black belts and once tried out for "The Ultimate Fighter" where I got my nose broken.
4. I had a cat named Private First Class Puddin' Belly who killed 3 squirrels and a robin in 5 hours.

Other interests?
None that are fit for printing here.

Five Fun Favorites

Favorite TV Show:
I don't really watch TV, to be honest, but if I had to choose one, I'd say it's "The Wiggles". Those Aussies crack me up.

Favorite Movie Of All Time:
Dude! You're killing me! I have so many...but the one that I've always loved more than any others has to be The Empire Strikes Back.

Favorite book:
That's an easy one. It has to be "The Philip K. Dick Reader."

Favorite sport:
Rugby.

Favorite food:
Carne Machacas.

Where did your title "Sheeple of the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom and Morality" come from?
Aldin. Aldin's a dear friend of mine, and he titled me after this... http://www.heroscapers.com/community...&postcount=144

Where's the "Superfly Circus?" Why/how did you start the website?
It's in my head, but excerpts can be found at www.superflycircus.blogspot.com. I was sick of 99% of the game reviewers either being obvious shills, being so full of total and complete s#$%, or being such terrible writers that I felt duty bound to do something different. Go to the site and look at the entry "Contest winners...Revealed" to see why I'm different. My favorite one, to this day, is still "Scooby Doo The Gold Rush Game", one of the first.

For the record, there's only one true game reviewer on the planet I trust completely: Matt Drake, your own Infinity Max, at his website, Drake's Flames. He truly is salt of the earth, and if you ever meet him in person, you'll immediately love the guy. Truly one of the best.

How's your website doing? Care to spill any beans about upcoming blogs?
It's kicking a$$ and taking names. I get about a thousand or so hits an article on my site in a month, and I syndicate on about 10 sites, so I get a total of around 6 to 10 thousand hits that I can track. People love to hear the unfiltered truth, that's all I can say. I'd do it even if nobody read it, though, because I love to write, and if today's post is an example, it's one hell of a pressure outlet valve to the universe.

I've got a Merchants and Marauders review being written soon, I have an interview with an AMAZING graphic artist, Eric Carter, and I have another interview with Board Game Exchange president David Muta.

You seem to come off, how do I say, "brash", to current events on this site, such as here and here, and is unique to you (And everyone likes it ). Yet when I met you:
Spoiler Alert!
How do you explain it?
It's simple. I am who I am, I make no excuses, and I don't feel the need to lie to people in order to conform. If you disagree with me, I respect that and I can accept that. Only uninformed pukes really set me off, because if you're going to debate, at least have a modicum of substance, not some philosophy that has no credibility outside your own sad little circle of friends. That being said, I try to treat people with respect, friendship, and compassion as best I can, and I'm passionate, so when I disagree, I tell you how it is. That being said, I'll also take you in if you're down and out, I'll offer you the shirt off my back if you're broke, and I'll help you find a job. That's who I am, and what I'm about.

Any Heroscapers member you'd really like to play against?
YES. I want to play against Hahnarama. That rat has been dodging me for years and I want to take a poke. The fact is that I suck, and I mean TRULY suck, at Heroscape, and I know I'll lose, but I want to take a poke anyhow.

What message do you have for the community?
Don't stop holding the torch for Heroscape. Guys like Balantai and IAmBatman deserve massive support for what they're doing with the Star Wars and Marvel stuff. They're breathing new life into the game now that Wizards of the Mistakes has cancelled the line. God (or whatever deity or nondeity you abide) bless (or simply offer luck, good tidings, and support) them.

What Units would you like to see in the next Unit Debate?
I don't. I stopped reading the idle debates because they're unwinnable. It's all opinion, and the fact is that if you take a guy like SpiderPoison and play 100 times, trading armies every other game, he's going to whip your a$$ 100 times. That shows me that it's not the units, it's the strategic mind behind them.

Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week?

No worries, Megasilver, just keep 'em coming.

I am surprised by the lack of commentary here, but I suspect that many, like me, are just gobsmacked by the awesomeness of this interview and/or afraid to guess on the 3 truths and a lie.

What does that say about us that none of us are picking #2 as the lie.

I'm going # 4. 2 squirrels? Maybe. 3? No way.

Number 3 is the lie, I think, based on what I remember from meeting and talking to you.

There's no commentary because I'm not that interesting of a person. Just ask Jexik. We had dinner some time ago and played some games. Class act.

You're too kind, Pete, my brother.

Nice interview....I was a little surprised your tenure and involvement was only 2.5 years. You made a lot of waves in a short time!!!
