IMHO, "gulch" is more indicative of 'Scape's multi-genre mishmash than *yawn* "ravine." It brings Westerns to mind. A volcano, the Old West, a dragon--that's HeroScape.

(Also makes me think of Harryhausen's The Valley of Gwangi, where cowboys try to lasso an angry allosaurus)

Good points, Scott. I think I'll hold off on the name change for now, and wait to see what some of the judges have to say about the map. If I just end up revamping it, I'll probably just rename that. We'll see.

Anyway, a few updates for this thread. First, a couple maps (these things seem to be coming in pairs quite a bit):

Clever Name

Yeah, I pulled a blank for names again, but I like this name anyway-it's kind of clever. Anyway, a simple, 1 RotV map that, while being basic, pulls in a great deal of fun play. Good for a quick game.

Assassin's Tomb

Requires: 2 BftU, 1 FotA

My first map using castle pillars as line-of-sight blockers. And one of those maps where you like the first version, then make the major mistake of taking it apart before making it in VS. But I like this version of it better than the first. There are a lot of ways to get around this map, it just takes the guts to make use of them to play well on it. There's also a Treasure Glyph in the middle, and those who don't successfully pick it up risk taking a strike from the ghosts of assassin's past.

As always, comments and criticism are welcome-these maps won't get better without it.

After many games of playtesting, it's new map time:

Don't Call it a Comeback...

This map came about when I wanted to make something that encouraged offensive play, rather than ye olde screen/turtle techniques, and could also allow for great comebacks (hence the name, kinda). I ended up with this split start zone map with one section of start zone more advanced than the others. With this, you can take a chance when placing your units-it puts you in a good tactical area, but you risk being overwhelmed by figures in the two enemy start zones nearby. Kind of a combination of Interception and Forest Brawl. Enjoy.

These are some good maps - you've come a long way from your QuickMap. I like the RotV only maps a lot (always looking for great small maps!) especially FloodPlains which I will have to try.

BTW we played Hot Crossed Buns at the Draft tourney I set up and people I guess liked it although I got no direct feedback. We had like 4-5 lava maps but I am surprised not many people brought units with the lava resistant power to draft as I think Shurrak or Moltenclow would clean up on it.

I had work off this week, which means I had extra time to build and playtest another map, one I've been planning for a while and finally got to work. And so, I give you:

Durgeth Falls

Requires: 1 RotV

An asymmetric map, which led to a lot of playtesting, and I'm pleased with how it's balanced out. One of my more favorite parts mechanically on this map is the glyph under the small overhang-it allows the "lame" double spaced units to get to it, but dragons, trolls, etc. can't because of their size. Sometimes this makes for a tight fit when taking that glyph, but you can fit most small and medium figures in it with the exception of kyrie and figures with really tall sculpts (like the stinger holding its gun straight up).

I've been messing around with Moltenclaw's Gulch the past month or so, which has resulted in what is, IMO, a better map:

Moltenclaw's Gulch

Requires: 2 BftU, 1 VW

A great lava map with many narrow passageways, along with some good open ground for the clash of armies. Has become one of my favorite maps in its revision. Kudos to UtahScott for providing ideas of how to change the map and tipping me in the right direction.

Major changes from earlier version:

-You can now climb over the side of the gulch itself-it's a dangerous path but really helps the map breathe.
-Pathway to the left of the start zone is now more easily accessible.
-And it all started when UtahScott suggested actually raising the water spaces by Moltenclaw's perch-allowing more units to engage and also allowing easier access to both the middle and left paths.

Bigga, I've been messing around with the new build and have several suggestions that will kick it up to 11. Short version: you've opened it up laterally, but it can be opened up even more.
