Character Bio - Chewbacca (or "Chewie", as he was known by his friends) was a legendary Wookiee from Kashyyyk and co-pilot of Han Solo's ship, the Millennium Falcon. He was the son of Attichitcuk, the husband of Mallatobuck, and the father of Lumpawaroo. Chewbacca carried with him the name of an ancient Wookiee hero, the great Bacca, first of the great chieftains of Kashyyyk, and the creator of a sword that denoted leadership among the Wookiees.

CHEWIE'S LIFE DEBT
At the start of the game, you may choose a Unique Hero you control. After taking a turn with the chosen figure, you may move Chewbacca up to 6 spaces as long as Chewbacca ends his movement adjacent to that figure. If the chosen figure would receive enough wounds to be destroyed and Chewbacca is adjacent to that figure, you must destroy Chewbacca instead. If the chosen figure is Han Solo, you may add 1 die to Han Solo's defense as long as he is adjacent to Chewbacca, and you may add 1 to Han Solo's Move number as long as he begins his turn adjacent to Chewbacca.

WOOKIEE RAGE
If Chewbacca attacks an adjacent figure with a normal attack and fails to inflict 1 or more wounds, he may attack one additional time. Chewbacca may not use Wookiee Rage to attack more than twice in a single turn.

BOWCASTER SPECIAL ATTACK
Range 7. Attack 5.
Chewbacca may not use his Bowcaster Special Attack if he moved this turn.

Yep, it is for Life Debt. It is not mentioned in the rulebook because it is not required for gameplay. We simply added it so that you can keep track of who's who better (especially if you are playing high point games). Greedo has a similar marker for Bounty so that you can remember who his bounty is easily.

Why does Chewie die for Life Debt?

I played a game today where Vader towed his Wookiee slave into battle, took 5 wounds, then would have taken another wound, but instead destroyed full-health Chewbacca instead, which left me wondering what the little blaster shot that would have finished off the bloody and battered Lord of the Sith did so that it killed the mighty Chewbacca. I wondered if it would't be better if Chewie was forced to take the wounds, possibly resulting in his death, rather than dying automatically, even if it's just a scratch.

That's where you have to make a choice. Early on, keep Chewie by the Sith Lord to protect against that lucky shot. If Vader is battered, you may choose not to have Chewie follow him to his doom, risking the healthy Wookiee. As Vader's Health declines, leave Chewie in a good Bowcaster spot to avenge the Sith Lord's death.


Obviously, Life Debt is most effective pairing Chewie with Han Solo, giving Han the extra defense and move along the way. Chewie becomes more of a target then as well, since he makes it harder to kill the wily Solo.

The original design for Chewbacca had Life Debt function as you suggest, but we found in testing that it was too game changing, offering a lot of "meat shields" to a key figure that Chewie is Life Debted to without even putting OM's on him. The idea we entertained next was to make it usable only once per game.

The ability says that Chewie can't attack more than twice with Wookiee Rage. The first time is a normal attack though, right? So he can attack up to three times, right?

The intention is that he can make a normal attack and if he misses he can attack only one additional time using Wookiee Rage.
