TALES COME TO LIFE
Because "Heroes of Fiction" was taken.

For my customs (and adaptations) based on fictional personages. For now, Dr. Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Marvel Agents of SHIELD. And the featured unit of right now: Ghostbusters!



Figures with a § are adaptations of official units, or of someone else's custom. Figures with a ¤ have a card. All units are subject to change, most have not been properly playtested, and some are not housebroken. Use at your own risk. May be bigger on the inside.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy. Despite some clunker episodes, a few characters I'd rather forget, and a terrible ending, it's still one of my favorite TV shows of all time. We're now rewatching the whole series, introducing it to the boys, which is just reaffirming its general awesomeness.

So why not combine one of my favorite shows with one of my favorite games?

Since getting the figure for Buffy Summers, I've been theoryscaping some of the other characters from the series and looking for the right minis, or at least, minis that are somewhat suggestive of their characters. These are based on the characters up to Season 3 (so Willow has magic but can't threaten to destroy the world; Spike is devoted to Drusilla but has a complicated relationship with Buffy, etc.)

The Demon Within
After taking a turn with Angel, if he inflicted one or more wounds with his normal attack, you must roll the 20-sided die. If you roll 1-4, choose an opponent to take control of Angel. Remove all Order Markers from this card, then give this card to the chosen opponent. If Angel is controlled by a player that did not control Angel at the start of the game, Angel cannot use his Dark Avenger special power, rolls one additional attack die, and follows Utgar.

Healing
At the end of the round, remove 1 Wound Marker from this card.

This is the same as the C3G version, only I have put him in Vydar since my other Buffy characters are all assigned to Generals. Vydar as the "neutral" general represents the tension between the "Angel" and "Angelus" sides of him. He can switch between Vydar and Utgar.

Heartbreaker
If Drusilla is destroyed, you must place her on an Army Card you control with the Life Drain special power, if possible. If you have more than one such card, you must choose the one with the highest point value. Reduce the Attack and Defense numbers on that card by 1.

Ah, Drusilla. Of course she's Valkrill, with her whole "destroy the world" thing and all that crazy going on. Her Oracle power represents her psychic precognitive ability, which is often confused but does give her and Spike the edge if he can figure out just what it means. Unlike Sonya's "Eternal Heartbreak," it's her own death that will break the heart of another vamp. The mini isn't great, she never dresses this "trashy" but it will have to do.

Like fellow Hybrid Van Nessing, Aquilla seemed like the right choice for Oz. You'll want to set him up to make the best use of his Werewolf form, but be careful it doesn't turn on your own Scoobies! He has one less Life than the others because he will fully heal after he Wolfs Out. I don't know if that's canonical but it makes sense to me.

After taking a turn with a Slayer you control, if there is at least one unrevealed Order Marker on this card you may choose a different small or medium Hero you control who does not follow Utgar or Valkrill. Giles may be the chosen Hero. Immediately take a turn with the chosen Hero.

Knocked Out
If Giles receives any number of wounds but is not destroyed, you may remove him from the battlefield and place him on this card. Remove all Order Markers from this card. At the end of a round in which Giles was Knocked Out, you must either place him on an empty same-level space adjacent to a figure you control, or destroy Giles.

I wavered between Jandar and Einar for him. Einar because British, and because of his penchant for bucking the rules of the Council and for certain morally gray actions in later seasons. But he's still Buffy's conscience and guide to what is Right, so I'm keeping him in Jandar. One version of "Magical Research" gave an additional defense against special attacks, but I think this expanded Holy Relic is better. He's a C&C unit with a penchant for getting knocked out, which is pretty much Giles in a nutshell. Note that if he gets Knocked Out, you can no longer use Watcher to get a second activation.

Of the minis, I'm the happiest with this find. He really does look like Giles! Without glasses, but one can't have everything.

This is Season 2 & 3 Spike. Not as powerful as Angel (that fits), and without Drusilla, not as powerful as Cyprien (no flying or Chilling Touch). He's still not sure how he feels about the Slayer, but is devoted to Drusilla. Not the best mini. I will have to see how the hair painting goes.

And… now he's in Utgar. The Full Moon happens every 4 rounds, not every 4 weeks, but it's a game, not a simulation, right? "Hungry Like The Wolf" represents his ravenous nature, he'll attack anything. With careful planning, though, you should be able to avoid "friendly fire."

After revealing an Order Marker on a wounded small or medium Hero figure you control that is adjacent to Willow, and before using any other special powers on any Army Card or Glyph, you may first roll the 20-sided die. If you roll 1-12, nothing happens. If you roll a 13 or higher, remove up to 2 wound markers from that Hero's Army Card.

Ullar, easily. This is Season 2&3 Willow, so not yet at the point where she's burn-the-world powerful. Essentially a weaker Ana Karithon, but with some boost against Demons as well. She's extremely fragile, and will probably always get the X Order Marker in order for her to use Spell of Protection on herself. (Unless you give it to Giles for an additional "Watcher" activation.)

I wish I had a better figure for her, but after cutting off the gun it won't be that bad.

I Laugh In The Face Of Danger...

After taking a turn with a Slayer, Hybrid, or Witch Hero you control, you may immediately move Xander Harris up to 4 spaces. When moving with this special power, Xander does not take leaving engagement attacks from figures that are engaged with other friendly figures.

Xander, despite his goofiness, is pretty clearly Jandar with his moral compass. His role in combat is generally supportive, and I hope these two powers get at his character. His class is an homage to one of the best Xander-centric episodes.

Doctor Who

I’ve mucked about with making a card for The Doctor before, and the Christmas special inspired me to give it another shot:



I’ve taken inspiration from three different designs: @Matt Helm , @A3n , and Heroes of Fiction.

I liked the stats on the HoF version. The attack of zero felt right, since he doesn’t do a lot of actual fighting. (Although apparently he can defeat Robin Hood with a spoon.) Mostly he just does something “Brilliant” that the enemy cannot defend against. So I kept Brilliant SA (from HoF and MH), changed Sonic Screwdriver, used MH/A3n’s Run! (slightly modified), and used MH’s Regeneration power. Dropped the stats by 2 Life, since there’s the (very strong) possibility of regeneration. I’m still on the fence about which version of Regeneration to use. MH uses Rejected By Death (10% chance every turn), while A3n has his at 25%, but at the start of each round. The former is of course more reliable, especially if you have bonding units that let you take multiple turns per OM. I am considering changing Regeneration, so you roll after revealing a numbered OM, not every turn. Especially because of Amy Pond:



For Amy, I used A3n’s base stats for Martha Jones, which seemed about right character-wise. “Doctor!” also worked to translate to Amy. But what else for Amy? She is very strong-willed and a major driver of the plot, but not a major player in a Heroscape-type fight (despite the alt-Amy from “The Girl Who Waited”). I thought that re-theming Combat Leader as “Ginger” would work for her, and The Girl Who Waited gives her a boost to The Doctor’s regeneration chances. Over multiple rolls, that 5% difference compounds! My concern right now with her is that she is mostly a passive support figure; you’d want to keep her away from the fray, which makes sense tactically I suppose but doesn’t feel Amy. Another option would be to change the initiative roll boost to an OM boost — give her bonding with a Time Lord or another Companion?

Rory is another tricky one. He’s a nurse, so I used A3n’s Healer from Martha Jones. And he’s a rebooted Roman (I’m using Marcus DG as the figure), hence “The Last Centurion”. Loyal Companion gives him the “hands off my wife” moment.



Captain Jack Harkness is directly taken from Matt Helm’s version. Just has Vydar now, and John Barrowman’s deadly cheekbones.

Right now I'm using the Star Wars "Arica" figure. The hair is all wrong, of course. I may attempt some Green Stuff sculpting! Unless anyone has a better suggestion for a River proxy...

Hey, how about some bad guys?

I made some slight changes to A3n’s Assault Daleks. Clarified Dalek Shields (and moved disengage to the Movement power.) I also changed their class to Cyborg, so they are covered by my version of the Sonic Screwdriver now.



I’m using the “Character Builder” Dalek figures.

For the Cybermen, Cyborg is now the class, with “Humanoid” as the species (you see there are two versions of the Cybermen from two different planets and… yeah, go read about it.) I simplified Electro-Touch somewhat. And I didn’t quite understand “Cyberman Armour” as an “Explosive Attack” is not really defined. So I upped their base Defense to 6 and left it at that.



The figure is a Heroclix “M11”. They’re not actually that expensive; I should just pick up some more. (More minis! More!!!)

The "steal the X Order Marker" element of "Rising Tide Hacker" was the key synergy change I was looking for. First, there's the bluffing / guessing element of "find the X" that makes it fun. Second, she can give the X to Coulson, who can use it for a second "Coulson's Team" activation. Third, she can prevent a figure from waking up from "Night-Night Gun". "Hacking" as presented on TV is basically our modern version of magic, so why not?

After moving and before attacking, you may subtract any number of Grant Ward's attack dice from your roll, to a minimum of 1 attack die, and add that number to his Range number for this turn.

I feel like he and May are closely matched combat-wise, so they have the same stats and CCE. "Treachery" which is basically "Stab In The Back" but with worse odds. (However that does mean higher odds of him defecting back to you! However once he's turned he can no longer be part of "Coulson's Team".

With his sword, gun, and satchel, this figure just wanted to become a Lovecraftian "Investigator" of things better left un-investigated. I thought that he could be the Earth-counterpart to Feylund's Van Nessing, so because of cross-dimensional synchronicity and stuff, he's "Leopold Van Nessing" and has mostly the same stats.

He is "In the Clutch of a Stark and Hideous Madness" because he has gazed into the maw of the eldritch truth that mere mortal man was not meant to know -- which either makes him break down, unable to act, or drives him into a feral rage. LVN's Relic is copied from VN's (although LVN's can affect Demons as well as Undead). He's not a great shot, so I used the Sword of Reckoning trick to give him more oomph against adjacent figures, especially the foul beasts from beyond. I used this Lovecraft name generator to, um, generate the names.

Bio:


The Hounds of Tindalos dwell in the distant past of the earth, when normal life had not yet advanced past one-celled organisms. They are said to inhabit the angles of time, while other beings (such as humankind and all common life) descend from curves. The Hounds are thought to be immortal, and are believed to lust after something in humankind and other normal life, and will follow victims through time and space to get it. Their appearance is unknown, because no characters who meet them survive long enough to give a description. It is said that they have long, hollow tongues or proboscis to drain victims' body-fluids, and that they excrete a strange blue pus or ichor.

Though the Hounds are sometimes pictured as canine, probably because of the evocative name of the first story in which they appeared, it is not likely that they appear as such- the story states that the name "veils their foulness". Various pastiches suggest that the Hounds are more bat-like in appearance, like the byakhee, or may appear even worse. The name Hounds of Tindalos refers more to the creatures' habits than their appearance.

Because of their relationship with the angles of time, they can materialize through any corner if it is fairly sharp—120° or less. When a Hound is about to appear, it materializes first as smoke pouring from the corner, and finally the head emerges followed by the body. It is said that once a human becomes known to one of these creatures, a Hound of Tindalos will pursue the victim through anything to reach its quarry. A person risks attracting their attention by travelling through time.

So how to represent this in 'Scape? The "Eldritch Hunter" represents its relentless pursuit of its quarry. I had another version of the "Angles of Space" that teleported it to spaces next to walls and cliffs, but this version is simpler. You can teleport it 4 spaces (ignoring height, through castle walls, etc.) and then move it normally 3 spaces. The "Angles of Time" is its ability to move outside of normal "Scape time."

As an "assassin" figure it's perhaps too weak when attacking its quarry. Perhaps +4A, or an auto-skull instead?

The Hound will bond with my Blood Demons which would be a good way to maximize the "Angles of Time" power.

I knew as soon as I saw this little guy that I had to get him. I always liked Sonlen and his pet dragon (blame it on Pern) so now the other Wizards can get a dragon too! Or Sonlen can have two. The figure is a little smaller than Sonlen's dragon -- maybe about 80% of the size. I never quite liked the thematic implications of it being able to do both Dragon Healing and Dragon Swoop on the same turn, so Aryxon can do one or the other. Defense is relatively high to represent its ability to fly evasively, and being a small target. The cost is really a guess.

I hesitated to buy this, as it's a relatively pricey figure (~$4) for a filler unit. Fortunately, it arrived broken (bad packaging on a delicate figure, guys!) so I ended up getting it for free. Some Loctite and Sugru for the base fixed it right up.

I was going through the cheap minis on Auggie's and spotted the Infernal Armor, which put me in mind of an empty suit of armor, animated by magic and protecting the spellcaster who created them. A little research gave me the D&D name for these: Helmed Horrors. My Helmed Horrors differ a bit from the D&D version: they don't fly, they don't outlive their Creator, and instead of being neutral, they're evil! I like the idea of the danger for messing with dark magics, hence the potential penalty for non-Utgar and non-Valkrill spellcasters. The astute Heroscaper will note the similarity of these Helmed Horrors to the Greenscale Warriors, since they fulfill more or less the same function. The stats are mostly the same. The Helmed Horrors have higher defense when not near their boss, which makes sense to me since they're suits of armor. Their attack is lower when not near the boss, but comes up to the same within the range. On the plus side, they bond with many more units and have some Soulborg-type immunities. On the minus side, there's the potential "dark magic" penalty, and they fall to pieces when the boss dies. I priced them at 10 points below the GWs.

Updated: This is one of the earlier units I did, and boy was it a mess. I reduced the number of potential spellcasters from "every possible magic user" to 4 classes, and took out the "Soulborg immunity" clause. Cleaned up a few other wording issues.

Summon the Gates
The Margath Gates do not start the game on the battlefield. Instead, after revealing an order marker on the Army Card of an unengaged Archmage, Sorcerer or Wizard Hero you control, you may place one Margath Gate adjacent to that Hero. Place the other Gate on any previously empty space within 10 spaces of that Hero, such that the Hero has clear line of sight on that Gate.

Enchanted Objects
A Margath Gate never makes attacks, including leaving engagement attacks. Once placed, a Gate cannot be moved by any special power or glyph. A figure may not move through a Margath Gate. If one Gate is destroyed, immediately destroy the other.

Through The Gates
When moving normally, a figure adjacent to a Margath Gate may move to a previously empty space adjacent to the other Gate, if possible. Using Through The Gates uses 2 moves. After moving with Through The Gates, roll the 20-sided die. Add 3 to your roll if the player who contols that figure also controls an Archmage, Sorcerer or Wizard on the battlefield. If you roll a 4 or lower, destroy the figure.

I picked up a pair cheap in my latest trollandtoad binge. They are huge. No idea if this point cost is even in the right ballpark.You get to teleport, but then again so does your opponent. I doubt these would ever see any serious play but I thought they could be fun.

The Wizards of Vong

Every city-state, hivelet, and burrg on Vong paid tribute to the Wizard Circle. Not to buy the Wizards' loyalty, for that was beyond price.

Nor would the Wizards Circle take sides in the internecine conflicts that raged across Vong like seizures in the body politic. The Wizards were above politics -- indeed, they were above the laws of time and space itself. The Tribute was for protection.

From the Wizards themselves, of course.

Once a year, the leaders of every tributary would be brought to the lost city of Xuchotl. Without warning, the leaders would be teleported to the deserted streets of alabaster. A thousand years had passed since the mighty city of Xuchotl had thought itself strong enough to refuse to pay the Wizards' Tribute. The screams of its people, trapped in a living death outside of time, rang in the ears of the Vongarian leaders.

Sometimes the leaders were left there for minutes. Sometimes hours. One year, it was a harrowing three days. And then, just as suddenly, the leaders were returned home.

An earlier version of this had Nyxos dropping the XOM on the field to create the Sphere of Darkness around it. A cool idea that I want to use sometime, but definitely complicated. This one is easier to understand. With no visible hit zone himself, he's able to make ranged attacks without getting hit from ranged attacks (like Drake) and grants Stealth Dodge to his advancing allies. However he's the only one who can see in the dark, so you can't just sit there and blast away from within the Sphere. Blinding Blaze represents his ability to cast a blinding light that can make it impossible for a Hero to see.

Warcaster seems like a pretty offense-focused category, so I went with 2 offensive spells. Inspired by Brimstone I wanted to try an area attack. I think this works thematically and mechanically -- a concentrated cloud will affect the target only, but if it is spread out its effect dissipates. Fairly "swingy" since you don't know the effect range. I like the trade-off of using the X Marker as a "mana" device, which I may use for other magic-users. He has to build up power to use it, and it leads to some trade-offs -- do I go for the self-healing spirit drain or save up for the area attack?

So, here's the backstory on Morsbana -- basically I had this figure, had run out of ideas for Elven Wizards, didn't own Morsbane, and thought this would be an opportunity to "upgrade" the unit. I have a lot of "adapted" units, some of them straight transcriptions from official units, some re-themed, some tweaked.

As to your other question -- only some of these have cards because I have only had the time to make so many cards. Often a unit will evolve a few times between getting the initial idea down here and making the card, not to mention afterward! I hope to eventually get cards made for all of them -- I just have to stop coming up with ideas for new figures so I can get to the ones I already have....

By rights he should be Wild, but I don't want synergy with the Dreadguls (I don't own). Yup, he's there for the Tarn. (I don't have Valguard either.) Hammer Strike I used before with Jorn. Warrior's Fury gives him a reason to move with the Tarn, and since it's passive it will help them on their OM.

General Vydar needed a Psychic to counter the increasing number of Psi attacks on his troops, and Dr. Zed was a perfect fit.

As a scientist, Dr. Zed had spent his life studying the powers of the human mind. His research into ESP, telekinesis, telepathy and mind control had earned him both the ridicule of the academy and the backing of certain government agencies so clandestine they did not know of each others' existence. With their funding and technology, he began to bring together the paranormal and the the supernormal. Cybernetics, he was sure, held the key to amplifying the abilities of those humans with psychic powers.

But his experiments kept failing. And failing as in dying. Even the clandestine government agencies could not procure an endless supply of "gifted" subjects. Worse, Dr. Zed could not ensure an endless supply of excuses of why he still had no results. Fearful of having to report ultimate failure (or worse, a quadruple audit), Dr. Zed tried to recruit his own subjects. He soon found that anyone psychic enough to warrant experimentation also pretty much knew what he was up to before he could make the attempt. A brief but messy foray into enhancing monkey brains went nowhere good, and trying to create a psychic hivemind from a swarm of bees was, in hindsight, a pretty bad idea. Desperate to show results (and knowing of the Clandestine Agencies' unpleasant methods of removing failed assets), Dr. Zed did what any Mad Scientist would do -- used himself as a subject.

The results were spectacular. It turned out that Zed's cybernetic implants, when used on an active psychic, overloaded the brain's circuitry. But when implanted in the brain of a latent psychic, which Zed proved to be, they not only awoke those powers but improved them.

Dr. Zed went on a spree of mind control, telekinetic assault, and gluttony. (Cybernetically-enhanced psionics uses up a tremendous number of calories.) At first he focused on revenge against his academic nemeses. Then he moved on to the amassing of wealth, power, and a small but useful corps of mind-controlled servants. Finally, he attempted to manipulate his former funders into fighting against each other. However, one of the Clandestine Agencies had long ago replaced its faceless, mindless bureaucrats with faceless, mindless android bureaucrats (who required neither a pension nor a health plan). Immune to Zed's mind control, they folded, spindled, and mutilated him. In triplicate.

Zed came to Valhalla too late, his injuries too severe. Even the healing energies of the Wellsprings could not reverse the robotic mutilation. But General Vydar was not to be denied his psychic warrior.

When Dr. Zed regained consciousness,Dr. Zed he could see nothing. He could feel nothing. His mind floated in a sea of darkness. He reached out with his mind -- the cybernetic implants still seemed to work -- and there met with a cold intelligence. Vydar.

"Welcome to my army, Dr. Zed. I hope you will find your new accommodations to be... comfortable." And Zed received the image of his own brain, floating in a jar, on top of Vydar's tablemap. Thus his new life, as Vydar's least mobile warrior, began.

I think this is the umpteenth version I've done of Dr. Zed. I simplified Psionic Field, you only roll for it once per figure, not for every time it moves on a space. That would be super-annoying. Carry Me has the LEA clause in it, and dispenses with the "free attack" of Psionic Field. I dropped the "once per turn" on that, he can now be "relayed" up to the front if necessary. Reinforced Glass (adding shields against non-adjacent attacks) seemed hard to justify. I just dropped it (and upped his defense to 2). You'll have to be pretty careful with him to keep the "mine/mind field" effect. Best if you can position him behind something. Or someone. He's a pretty small target. I also gave him the ability to attack an adjacent figure -- if Psionic Field fails, he can attempt to make a psi attack on it. However he can't make LEAs and height advantage doesn't really make sense either.

We Ain't Getting Paid Enough To Die
At the end of each round, you must roll the 20-sided die. Subtract 2 from the result for each previously destroyed Greedy Mercenary in your army. If you roll a 2 or lower, you must destroy a Greedy Mercenary you control.

These guys were cheap, and seemed like a good Merc squad. The Ares figure has a sword and shield on his back, which is a bit incongruous, but whatever.

The two powers are in tension with each other. To get the most out of them, you'll need to pile on the OMs and get aggressive with them. But that puts them under fire, and with a Defense of 3, more likely to die off, which makes them more likely to "defect". I haven't tried them out yet, so we'll see how that works out on the battlefield.

A mashup of Master Woo and Spider-Man. I had this idea of re-theming the Marvel units into Classic, and so far I've done Thanos-> Grim Reaper and Spider Man-> Ninja. A Ninja without Phantom Walk seems a bit odd but at least he can Stealth Leap. Kumo means "Spider" in Japanese.

Mostly Zogross, with a pseudo-movement-bonding for Anubians, less 1 stat on life, attack, and defense, which I think gets him to 75 points. I'm not sure he needs to be 75 points, so I could up his stats.

Roll 1, 2, or 3 attack dice against each of those figures, until 3 total attack dice have been rolled. Each figure rolls defense separately, may not be targeted more than once, and does not receive any bonus for height advantage. After using Fell Swoop Special Attack, Morlok may make a normal attack.

Stealth Flying
When counting spaces for Morlok’s movement, ignore elevations. Morlok may fly over water without stopping, pass over figures without becoming engaged, and fly over obstacles such as ruins. When Morlok starts to fly, if it is engaged it will not take any leaving engagement attacks.

I have no idea who the comic book "Crux" is, but the figure just looks right for 'Scape. I thought Demon, but I've got a lot of Demons, so it's some hybrid as the result of mad science. Or something, I dunno. The figure looks a lot better once you go over it with a wash, otherwise it's bright green.

Next... the Zombies of Morindan Midtown!



The figures are all various Horrorclix zombies. The first card has the Zombie Sorority Sister, Zombie Cop, and Zombie Lawyer. The second has a Zombie Patient, Zombie Hard Hat, and "Pod Zombie." The Pod Zombie is sort of the odd one out -- he appears to have a tree growing out of him. I'm just going to say he tried to eat a tree in Central Park and this was the results. Anyway, he was cheap. You can also easily remove the tree bits coming out of his back.

I did two sets of the first card (as they were more expensive) and three sets of the second card. All told, 5 squads cost me around $30, which is about the going price for two squads of "real" Zombies.

Here's a new unit I'm working on, a Common Squad for my Plant faction:



I finally found 3 sets of these Mage Knight figures (Living Elemental, Tanglewood Spirit, and Wood Golem) for fairly cheap. Should make for a good screen, even against figures with Phantom Walk. Not sure on the points, and I sort of want to up their attack to 3, but also want to keep them cheap.

I was just about to comment saying, "what's the point of having them inflict a wound when an opponent passes through them." Then I read the part about ninjas. I think you might be able to notch that attack up to three without putting them up to 60.

ULLAR'S GUARD is a nice special! I might consider using this if I ever custom any guards.

Looking at other guards, the points look pretty close. Looking at Tomb Skeletons, which are guards as well, you can probably up the attack to 3 even with all the specials.
