Just saw Spider-man...it was really good. A few things I didn't like but tons I did. My son says it's his best Spider-Man movie and I think I agree. Jumps itself right into the MCU.

I saw the first showing of Homecoming. I liked it, so did my friend who's less of a comic book nerd.

No real spoilers here but I'll tag it anyway:

It felt like it was put together a little strangely, I think its because such a large team worked on it, it wasn't any one person's vision from start to finish like most movies.

It was clear they were trying to stay away from the previous five movies too, it would have been better if the old movies didn't exist and this one was free to go where it wanted without having to think about how it would be compared.

They were a little heavy handed with the MCU references. We get it, not every scene needs a callback to a previous movie. It didn't hurt the movie but it felt a little heavy handed a few times and drew attention away from Spider-Man. There wasn't much substantial connecting material either, it was mostly just references, or picking up after a previous movie. They didn't introduce an Infinity Stone or further the plot with Thanos or anything so it didn't have much impact on the status quo for the MCU. We did become a little more informed about a few characters though.

It felt like it took a little while for the movie to find its feet. I think its because it's the first solo movie for SM but they didn't have to show his origin. But it didn't feel like a sequel either, it was a little awkward.

All of that aside I still think its a good movie and will hold up well. I know a lot about the behind the scenes studio deals and am also an amature filmmaker so I try to look at movies differently and pick them apart. From a director's perspective, I would have done the editing differently to change the pace in certain parts, particularly the beginning. And there were a few shots that I would have done much differently. I want to watch it again though, sometimes I pick up on stylistic themes later that let me know why it was made the way it was.

I liked it and have any of the same issues you had with it Hogg. I thought it's clear connection to the MCU was one of it's strengths and Iron Man's part wasn't really over used like he easily could have been. Vulture as the villain worked really well here in the context it was portrayed. Only one thing I really didn't like, it had little to do with this movie but could make the sequel pretty terrible so I hope they pivot before then.

They were definately push a cultural diversity thing a bit much. I had managed to see this movie without seeing a single trailer so I had no idea who the villains or actors were beyond spidey.

flash and "MJ" choices. The way they held onto the mj thing and just casually threw it out there at the end seemed like they hadn't fully committed to it being the real MJ yet and wanted to test the waters.

I'm guessing doc on will be Asian so they can have a fully inclusive Sinister Six. I mean Mac Gargan really does sound Hispanic to me right? I do like the actor though in Saul

Not Flash, as I don't really know very much about the character at all so I didn't notice if he was not a good fit, but the 'MJ' drop right in at the end was a terrible decision IMO. They called her Michele for the whole movie so now her real name is actually Mary Jane but she doesn't like to tell anyone? Even without the name change, that character's actions and personality throughout the movie as well as how she and Peter interacted didn't seem at all indicative of the Mary Jane I have known as Peter's life long love interest. Peter certainly wasn't a love struck and secretly pining for her from the very first time they met. The depressing friend less outsider social justice warrior doesn't really seem his type much less the type I would want to watch a future whole movie about. I really hope they pivot before the next movie and introduce a different character as his MCU Mary Jane since they never actually said her name was Mary Jane at any point.

As for the 'Scorpion' actor. I recognized him right away from Better Call Saul and Orphan Black and thought right away that he is too good of an actor to be cast in a throw away role. Really pleased to see that paid off at the end when they reveal he will be a future villain. He plays a Hispanic in both of those shows so I assume he will be so again. I never had an issue with Micheal Clarke Duncan when he played Kingpin, sometimes getting the a good actor is more important to me, so changing Scorpion and Shocker's race didn't bother me as I know and like both of those actors quite a bit. However, if trying to combat racism in Hollywood is the goal here they failed as it is actually appears quite racist to change a white villain into a minority while leaving the white hero white. I mean you could allege that Sony/Marvel thinks criminals are more likely to be minorities if you wanted to spin it that way.
