Re: Before Heroscape

Aeston, that is a great summary of the origins of the game. I never really considered Talisman part of Heroscape's origins, but I certainly see your point - without Talisman, there's no HeroQuest, and without HeroQuest, there's no Scape.

Extra kudos are especially due, given the amount of work it must have taken to run down all those photos. And you even credited them!

Yeah, what the hell, rep up.

Nooooooooooo! How I wish I could have purchased them from you instead. Even if they were ruined the minis are great for D&D.

And everyone, thanks very much for your kind words regarding my history lesson. I'm attempting to do more research to augment it (any my Battlemasters is around here *somewhere*).

It makes me sick to hear that. I've been looking high and low for the expansion packs. There are some of those expansions that sell for $300+ on eBay.

Please, for the love of God, people, don't throw away your games. Someone will want them, even if they're horrible.

Sorry. It was time for a serious purge of of old games.

I looked at eBay prior to throwing away the game(s).

The horrid shape of most of my expansions kept me from thinking they were worth more than maybe 30 bucks total. They were dusty and causing a shelf to collapse, I hate selling things on ebay. It just seemed easier to suck it up and purge it out of my life.

Re: Before Heroscape

Great write-up about pre-heroscape. This has been mentioned before at heroscapers.net site, but I like how you included many of the images for players that may not have known about these previous games.

Battlemasters was the original game that opened me up to Milton Bradley's and Games Workshop collaborations. The back of the BattleMasters box led me to Heroquest, "By the Makers of HeroQuest." If it wasn't for all of these games, I most likely would not have bought into Heroscape. Now, Heroscape receives most of my gaming funds. Thankfully I have all the games you included in your first post already.

It would be nice to include information about SPACE CRUSADE, SPACE HULK, the DARKWORLD series, and the Mattel MUTANT CHRONICLES boardgame (which had an ezoghoul that could be used as a Marro Queen/Hive Lord).

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

Re: Before Heroscape

Thats really neat. Nice read.

I had Heroquest when I was a kid but it did not get played much. It was an awesome game but it never really played right. Then last year, ages after it was likely thrown out I started reading about it on BGG. I then realized that the reason it never played right was because the armory was not included in the copy I had. I was too young to piece together (pun intended) what was wrong with it and contact the manufacturer. I tried to find my old copy but it was too late. I only found a few of the components. Anyway thats a somewhat related tangent.

Once again, great post.

Re: Before Heroscape

I had a few of these and/or played a friend's at one time or another. It is interesting to see the progression of how the evolution of one game moves into the next, especially the similar or re-used pieces. Thanks for the history lesson.
