"I find your lack of faith disturbing."

Played my first game of the new Star Wars Rebellion yesterday for six hours, and had lots of fun. My host had only played a very short first game previously with his copy (I don't own it myself), so it was a learning experience for the both of us. As the Empire, I came close to trapping the rebels twice. About 3/4 through the game I'd eliminated enough possible base locations to intuit where he was, but he evacuated just in time. Then I captured a prisoner and interrogated her on the same turn. When he had to name three systems, one of which was his, I had only five possibilities left, so he ended up telling me exactly where it was!

But I hadn't opposed his missions much, so he shut down the game on Turn 6, just before I could have attacked him in his second base. The Lando Redeployment Mission saved his bacon twice, as the second time he had almost nothing to oppose my nearby armada at his relocated base. I won almost all of the actual military battles we played; the Empire is very much stronger than the Alliance militarily, and I had most of them won going in.

This is a very fun game, a combination of a hunt and destroy with a tactical military game using several different space and land units. Best of all, its totally asymmetrical, with each side having very different strategic possibilities with their leaders, and even with their tactical military units. The most dramatic moment: after a ferocious multi round space battle, he managed to destroy my Death Star with the only serious fleet he managed to raise all game, just before I would have been able to activate it and start blowing up planets on the next turn! I'd stopped him from retreating, and he was down to almost nothing left. But Han Solo did it, after his first round attempt had failed!

Looking forward to a rematch as the Rebels this time. I'll have to switch from making evil movie quotes to good ones. The game is very well designed, and also does a great job of evoking theme, as it plays like an alternate time track of the first movie trilogy.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Great report @chas . It sounds like a very fun SIX HOURS. How would you compare SW Rebellion to ST Fleet Captains, especially the quality of the board and pieces. I own neither, have played neither, but am still considering obtaining either eventually.

JohnGee,

The SWR components are at opposite end of the spectrum from STFC; the new FFG game having first class ones.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

I do love having a Death Star mini. It should be easy enough to paint up when I finally get the paint brushes out again. Since you get 2 fully constructed ones and one partially build one, I think I may paint one using just different shades of grey and make another one more metallic looking.

Very cool. We have a local covention about 40 minutes from me, called ArctiCon in Valparaiso IN. I think this was the 5 year and it has grown over the years. GenCon is 2 hours south of me, and I've been there a couple times, but that was enough for me. I have about a buddies that go down to it the whole time and demo games for FFG or Mayday. One guy had an interesting interaction with Wil Wheaton a couple years ago

Anyway, congrats on the article and I hope the convention is a big success for you. And Flick ' em Up is a fun game for sure

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Had a big weekend of gaming last week. Got in 2 games of Blood Rage, two games of betrayal at the house on the haunted Hill, entire first part of time stories, and play some rock band.

• Generally speaking, I am always happy.
• Regarding the currently playing parameter, I was joking.
