Question About Blogs

Now I am not new to the internet, but I have never had anything whatsoever to do with blogs. Since the new forum includes this feature I was wanting to know what they are normally used for on the internet. I have a general idea just from reading some of the new blogs, but I would like a better definition if someone has one to offer.

Also, based on my gleaned understanding of how a blog works I got an idea for one, but I am trying to decide whether it should be a blog or just a regular thread. Can a blog post be edited like a forum post? If it can I think I will go with the blog approach. Thank you for entertaining a noobish question.

Programmers use them to log development histories.

It's like having a forum thread that's all about you. Think of it that way.
