Noob Army, What is best buy?

Tons of bonding, tons of fun abilities and decently competitive.

If your sole aim is to be able to field the best 550pt army you can, then the commons x2 advice, especially the deathreaver bits, is good. If part of the consideration is how much fun you'll get from the purchases, I'd steer you more towards a couple of unique packs. You'll get a lot more different units. As KC and Dok point out, you can already build some pretty good 550pt armies. Here are a couple I quite like with no more than one unique unit that you don't already own:

Major Q10: 150
Airborne Elite: 110
Stingers x2: 120
Krug: 120
Tarn Vikings: 50
Total: 550pts, 19 hexes.

Deathwalker 9000: 140
Raelin (RotV): 80
Kaemon Awa: 120
Krav Maga Agents: 100

Total: 550pts, 13 hexes.

I would suggest getting some hero sets before the common squads. 2 Unique armies is much more fair then a common vs unique combination. I would get the set Elves which adds a really fun elven army and maybe lawmen and samurai for fun. though both sets wouldn't be too good in a tournament situation, they are both fun to play with.

At this point I am leaning towards the Grut Orcs X2. Of coarse there is another combination I have in mind that I will keep to myself till after the tourney and am still open to any sugestions.

The problem with that grut orc army is that it lacks swog riders, which are a pretty crucial element to a successful arrow grut army.
