NAME OF THE PLAYTEST UNIT: West by Westnorth

Units: Herbert West (70), Pinhead, Leprechaun, Jason, Sam, Onomatopoeia, Chucky (1000) VS Alien Drone x5, Alien Queen (1000)

Spoiler Alert!

Everyone moves up round 1. Slashers get a slow start. But pinhead and Herbert set up behind the front lines, allowing the Aliens to come to them through the force of Jason+Chucky+Ono.

Aliens kill Jason. Since he’ll resurrect naturally, Herbert elects to not re-animate him. Lots of poor attack dice this round. 1 Alien falls and several Tormentors get wounded.

Tormentors wound 2 Drones, and Chucky falls to acid blood. As the Drones are Tormentors, Herbert also avoids re-animating Chucky, especially because Jason also resurrects this turn via Pinhead. Aliens bring Leprechaun to 4 wounds due to a defensive whiff, which means Leprechaun wounds the Alien Drone and kills it, which kills Leprechaun via Acid Blood, which means dead Chucky heals 3 and Herbert re-animates Leprechaun. So many things in one attack. The other Drone puts 3 wounds on Jason, and Pinhead resurrects Chucky. Leprechaun kills another Drone, and Herbert re-animates that too. A Drone kills Herbert. A Drone kills Leprechaun. As Leprechaun died on the Drones’ team, I believe he can no longer be resurrected by Pinhead. Pinhead forces the re-animated Drone to attack his brother. A Drone wounds Pinhead.

Pinhead kills a Drone. Drones bring Jason to 5 wounds, which lets Pinhead resurrect Herbert. The re-animated Drone kills the last living one, which Herbert chooses not to re-animate. The re-animated Drone wounds Pinhead. Pinhead sends the re-animated Drone away, then sends Jason to one-shot it back to the grave…permanently. The Queen misses her tail strike against Pinhead.

Queen kills Jason. Chucky wounds Queen. Queen kills Herbert. Ono and Chucky wound Queen, and acid blood wounds Chucky, which is enough wounds for Pinhead to bring Herbert back. Queen kills Sam, but Herbert re-animates Sam. Sam and Chucky bring Queen to 5 wounds, and Jason comes back via Pinhead.

Queen kills Herbert again. Ono wounds Queen and acid blood kills Chucky. Queen engages Pinhead finally and uses Sam’s own reroll power to benefit her and allow her to take out Pinhead. Finally the resurrections are at an end. Queen puts 5 wounds on Jason.

Queen kills Jason. Queen kills Onomatopoeia.


Who won? List figures remaining in the winning army (include life remaining for heroes): Alien Queen (7 wounds) wins.

THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT'S COST, BALANCE, & DRAFTABILITY: Just ran the one game as people wanted.
This game was wild, and lots of fun. I’ve never seen Pinhead resurrecting so many figures - Sewer Labyrinth allowed me to set up a perfect little pod where Pinhead and Herbert were surrounded by others and the Aliens had trouble reaching them. Herbert re-animating the dead was very useful, but also backfired at times. The Tormentors had to kill the Drone they resurrected even though they utilized it for their benefit earlier. And both Sam’s and Leprechaun’s abilities could be used against them on enemy turns when re-animated.

It felt a little overwhelming, so much so that I thought there was no way the Aliens were going to break through. But they finally did, and once Pinhead was able to be engaged and felled, it was all over. Having such a barrier of low-cost figures meant the Tormentors lacked a heavy hitter so they struggled on offense even though they had multiple revolving doors to and from death. It felt balanced overall, and was unlike anything else I’ve played. The 3 life on Herbert meant he was constantly coming back too, and you really wanted to re-kill Herbert before killing Pinhead to avoid Herbert just re-animating Pinhead. Lots of little strategy decisions like that this game.

Herbert was fun. I think he’s good to go as-is.

Any reason he’s Dr West instead of just Herbert? Is he called that specifically in the film? The story itself is titled Herbert West: Reanimator , and pretty sure he’s called Herbert mostly throughout. (I could thumb through it to be sure though). Also LV and I talked about some plans for other HPL characters and monsters, would be cool to have them all under a singular publisher for consistency. I assume what you have is the film company. Not wrong or anything, but something to tie them together would be cool. A book based Herbert design would be exactly the same as here so I’m not into a separate design for that version personally.

Could do HPL as the publisher, but I get if we don’t want his name attached to our stuff as he shouldnt exactly a role model for anyone.

I'm fine with HPL for the publisher. How do you want it listed, specifically? Just HPL?

As for the name, i've seen it used in the comics. Not something I feel strongly about either way, just thought it sounded a bit "cooler" than just Herbert West.

I’m cool with literally HPL. I’ll run it by LV too and see if he has a preference.

For the name, I guess my Hangul is that if I hear Herbert West, it’s immediately recognizable as possibly the most iconic human in Lovecraft mythos. If I hear Dr West, I wouldn’t even connect the dots that it’s him. So I have a preference there but I’m not going to have a riot or anything if it’s really wanted. Similar to putting Lord Vader on a card rather than Darth Vader. Works fine just gives me pause, hah.
