I'm not sure that there is a specific name for that first game. I believe they used a rules book similar to Bolt Action for the rules and historical reference books for other historical facts to incorporate into the game. I'm sure they use the terrain pieces for a variety of different types of battles they play out. There are several miniatures wargame books that have rules for certain eras and different scale minis. For example Black Powder offers rules to be used for various wars/conflicts that involve muskets. In fact, I got to play a Napoleonics miniatures wargame with the host using Black Powder rules. Heh, yeah, I love that picture, Jim.
T-Spinny, I'll be scared if anyone finds a striped green cat to pull off the Battlecat version of that picture! C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?
Just played Thunderstone. Late game feels particularly punishing in this game for players who didn't prepare well. Dominion can be like that also, but it is more bearable in Dominion because the fun stuff (playing and buying cards) is always an option.
My wife and sisters spent turn after turn preparing and buying village cards in the last half of the game. I had foregone any early-game dungeon-crawling to dump most of my starting deck so while they were doing that I was slaying all the level 3 monsters. It probably would have been better if I'd not used Vassel's epic variant or if I had more than 5 sets of heroes; the starter only comes with 5 and the level 1 heroes ran out about halfway through the game. I guess I need to get an expansion but I don't play the game that often. -- My wife and I have also been playing Ascension lately. We enjoy it but both feel it can be way more luck dependent than Dominion because the good cards that weren't available on your turn might then show up for your opponent... Sometimes over and over again. Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?
Yeah, I could agree with that knock on Ascension. I've really only played four deck builders extensively, but I'd probably rate them thusly:
1. Marvel Legendary (theme helps boost this over #2) 2. Dominion (I could just play this for hours) 3. Ascension 4. Thunderstone C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.

Speaking of, Akden, Over-Engineered, my buddy Stephen, and I met at a local game store for Int. Game Day yesterday. We played: DC Comic Card Game w/ Heroes Unite expansion, Lords of Waterdeep w/ Scoundrel expansion (this one was for Dad_Scaper who sadly couldn't make it), Manhattan Project, and Suburbia w/ the extra tiles from the Inc. expansion. Good times. We played a few games of Tsuro of the Seas today. The sea monsters add a lot more to worry about than the original game. I think they especially work well in lower player number games. P.S. I stink at worker placement games. |
