To be fair, ratings back in the day were much laxer. What would be PG back them would often be at least PG-13 today.

Agreed. PG-13 really shook things up, I went to see the first one, Red Dawn.
The criteria has shifted as well as to what is allowed in each classification.
Red Dawn barely made it into PG-13 as it was considered extremely violent at the time but is fairly tame compared to some current movies.
I do think with good writing and direction you can follow adult themes in a fairly family friendly way. The most important thing is getting the audience to care about the characters.

I agree with that, but I don't think homogenisation helps things. I think more in the way of sophisticated/thoughtful subject matter in PG rated media is a good thing, but I do think there's a place for higher rated stuff as well. I don't think dismissing that helps - I'm with Hahma here.

I really liked that film.

I split the difference of these two opinions.

There are a lot of movies that could easily been kept one rating lower (PG-13 to PG, And R to PG-13). But a marketing decision changed it. Something that could easily be PG added a little extra language because they didn't want an Audience to be turned off by a "kids movie".

Though I don't think Jessica Jones could have been done as well in a less mature setting. Sure you could cut the Luke and Jessica sex scenes and tone down the language, but the overall theme and pure horror of not being in control of your own body/mind just couldn't be presented in a lesser way. I feel it was needed in that case to have the emotional impact of the psychological horror.
Would I want it to be everything I love...sure...but that's just not realistic so I'm going to focus on finding things that will make me unhappy and work on fixing those.

I'll note that Disney is definitely continuing to produce adult material (like, they have a Ghost Rider series going to Hulu that's probably going to be dealing with a lot of "family unfriendly" stuff - Hell and demons and all that). But that stuff isn't going to be on Disney+. The guys in charge of Disney+ actually fired the team on the new High School Musical show because they were getting too dark with it... so yeah, worries about Moon Knight for sure.

So then all movies and cable television shows should be made to be G rated?

Nothing like the good old days when a cowboy would get shot, showing he got shot by putting his hand over the spot he got shot, and then spinning around a few times for dramatic affect.

Now I agree that some things can be alluded to and not as graphic, but I'll tell you that Batman of any iteration never scared me or made me believe that he was all that. Heath Ledger's Joker was the only legit real life scary thing about any of the Batman movies.

Here's the thing, why have to make all the movies and series' G rated, when the news on television and real life is scarier? Back in the day when all those lovely G rated shows were on, kids weren't having active shooter drills in school, or going to a bunch of their classmates funerals.

So those would all be out. But Doctor Who, Firefly, and Futurama are in the top ten, and they'd be OK.

Not saying that it can't be done in some cases for sure. I mean, one of my all time favorite TV shows was M*A*S*H, and they death with some serious stuff at times.


But Saving Private Ryan wouldn't have had the same affect if it didn't show some of the realities of war. What those soldiers went through and what the survivors lived with.
