Aesthetics of terrain

Hi folks,

I'm curious to hear what others think of the aesthetics of various types of terrain.

In my case, I find the basic terrain types which predominate in RotV (Grass, Rock, Sand) to be about the least visually compelling terrain in the game. Maybe it's the fact that they all have brown as background/framing color....

Admittedly, I'm not a fan of brown as a color in general. But in this case, I find it actively counter-intuitive. I mean, I think the Swamp tiles, with their unified green tops and sides, do a better job of conveying the look of grassy terrain than the Grass tiles do.

Same with rock: am I alone in thinking that the Concrete tiles resemble rocks more than the Rock tiles do?

Then there's the Dungeon tiles. Above all they remind me of broken snow-cover atop stony ground. I like juxtaposing them with Snow tiles, to give the impression of snowy patches giving way, here and there, to the underlying rock. But the floor of a dungeon? Not really.

What do you folks like to juxtapose with what?

I like rock and ice together, but that's pretty obvious. ..
I also like lava and dungeon together.

VW+TJ is probably my favorite looking combo.

SotM+BftU+TJ is pretty good looking, too.

As for my favourite "juxtapositions" (), I like BftU + VW, TJ + FotA (elswin plateau) and SotM + RttFF.

I love snow and castles in real life so my favourite maps are huge snowy castles. I also think the jungle looks good with the lava.

Hmm... I'll have to try juxtaposing snow with castle after christmas, when I have my TT
