North Korea's Itchy Trigger Fingers: What to Do?
This is just a thread set up to discuss Tuesday's events with North's Korea's breach of the 50 year armistice with South Korea, and their worst attack on their neighbor nation since decades. What are your views with it? Can we risk telling North Korea to stop firing? Disarmament? They are beyond our sphere of diplomacy, and Obama has declared that we remain strong allies with South Korea. He has also encouraged international nations to begin pressuring North Korea to "put the guns down". I for one am majorly concerned with events on the west side of the ocean. What to do?

I don't really want to see the war come. If it does, it could trigger World War III.

Re: North Korea's Itchy Trigger Fingers: What to Do?
Maybe we can finally put the U.N. to use. North Korea has been the biggest threat to world peace for a long time (in my opinion, anyway). Kim Jong Il is a crazy tyrant with an inferiority complex trying to prove that he's worth something.[/quote]
While I agree that the leadership in North Korea is borderline insane (it being the first recorded Necrocrati - since Kim Il Sung is still the supreme leader), I don't think China will allow for the conflict to escalate, and South Korea won't gain anything from a war either. You might get a local conflict, but it won't spread. Now if China is hit by internal chaos at some time in the future that's a whole other story... Garden of Athena book 1: Dogs of Hades out now! |

Obviously, we've got to stand with our North Korean allies...

Re: North Korea's Itchy Trigger Fingers: What to Do?
To be honest, I would almost be happy if a war broke out, because there is a high probability North Korea would lose horribly. North Korea gone would be good for everyone, and would make the world at least a little bit safer.
Now, even better would be just to drop a few bombs on them outright (not necessarily nukes, but maybe something more like the atomic bombs) that way we don't have to waste South Korean or American or anyone else's lives, but we all know this won't happen. Really all there is left to do is wait. If North Korea does something else stupid you can almost guarantee there will be a war. In case anyone here is unaware of what Ollie is talking about. |

Re: North Korea's Itchy Trigger Fingers: What to Do?
There is no simple answer.
Nuke them? No, China would probably retaliate just seeing a Minuteman II coming in their direction. The Minuteman is the USA primary ICBM. Continued Diplomacy/Sanctions? Has not worked, will not work, without China's backing. Military offensive? NUKES + Crazy Kim + US Invasion = Bad Idea Ignore them? Not a good idea, they just do something crazy to bring your focus back to them. Like a spoiled child. Assassinate the Leadership? Destabilize the government, keep the military leaderless and confused, if you get them all at once, maybe you can avoid retaliation. If not ... duck and cover doesn't work. Delphic Neg Rep of the Year : "Desre for good grammar makes one looking to destroy fun??" I love it when the overly critical can't meet their own expectations. |

Not to mention that if anyone on this earth is a wizard, it's Kim Jong Il.
