NHSD: Rocky Mountain Rumble 10/15/11 - Cheyenne, WY

Preparation: This is probably the first tournament for which I made essentially no preparation. I didn't even start thinking of potential armies until 2 days before, and got zero playtesting in. What's more, I've been swamped at work the last couple months and had only gotten a smattering of games in (mostly for the SoV). Since I usually do a lot of preparation, I pretty much wrote off my chances of winning this tournament, so I figured I'd throw together a goofy army.

I knew right away that I wanted Taelord (after all, "costs too much" is his middle name). The first army I came up with was this:

Taelord, Syvarris, Feral Troll, WoAx2, Repulsors x2, Isamu and Otonashi

I figured that Syvarris' range with Taelord's boost would be pretty formidable, and if anyone got close, the Feral Troll could take out the heroes, the WoA could take out the melee units, and the Repulsors could take out the soulborgs. Still, my main ranged option felt...

Lazy Laundry Tournament 3 – The Nagrub Open!

Posted May 20th, 2011 at 04:07 PM by Elginb
I’ve had Marrden Nagrubs win these tournaments before, but I’ve never had both finalists with Nagrub armies. I actually set these tournaments up to avoid pitting the same units against one another, but sometimes the teams are so good they still manage to run into each other even if they were put in another quarter or, in this case, a whole other half of the bracket.

This was a bit of a tournament of champions. Several of the armies had won previous Lazy Laundry Tournaments:

--Hulk, Venocs x3, Blue Wyrmling, Black Wyrmling, Red Wyrmling (Mind Flayer killed this team in the second round—made the Hulk jump into lava and then proceeded to cripple the Venoc Vipers all on his own, removing one order markere with each attack)

--Anubians x3, Khosumet, Mezzodemons x4, Guilty (I lead with the Anubians, in the hopes of taking out Nilfheim early, but failed; once the wolves fell to the lawnmower, the Mezzodemons couldn’t take out the Ice Dragon)...

Elginb's Alternative Unit Pricing

Posted April 21st, 2011 at 10:18 AM by Elginb

The whole Legacy thing got me thinking about how I personally would price all the Heroscape units. This isn't a new thing-- I've been pondering this for years. But I've been really working to figure out a good system for determining the proper point values over the last few weeks.

As far as a system, I pretty much failed-- no system or formula I put together came up with anything like I imagined was correct, so I decided to do it in a more intuitive way. I started by making random piles containing 10 army cards each, then ordered them as I imagined their value to be. Then I started merging the 10 card piles into 20 card piles, each time adjusting value as I saw fit. Eventually, I got all the cards put together-- the list below is pretty much what I think the real value of each unit is.

I've been playing Heroscape a long time, mostly with friends or by myself, but I've been to some tournaments. And unlike some HS fans, I actually play all the...

Elgin’s 3/19/11 Event Battle Report

I had a great time hosting the event at my place. I spent much of the week ahead of time prepping maps for it, though, unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to actually play-test the maps before setting them loose on the unsuspecting players—that meant they probably weren’t as balanced as I would’ve liked. That being said, I played on all of the maps, and I can’t say that I felt unduly restricted by them—maybe because they’re the types of maps I like to play on, and maybe because the draft format allows you to adjust your army to fit the maps—I think my wins/losses all had more to do with the choices my opponents and I made during the game.

My Army Pool:

Jotun, Charos, Rhogar Dragonspine, Kozuke Samurai, Zetacron, Roman Archers x2, Iskra, Rechets, Repulsors x2

Because I was building maps and cleaning my apartment (and dealing with Birthday engagements all week long), I didn’t put too much thought into the army pool. I was dabbling...
