Do I Have Anything To Prove?

Posted October 6th, 2009 at 08:34 AM by kolakoski
Well met!

The second day of engagement in the Long Island Heroscapers' Mixed Marvel Tournament Series was yesterday (450 points), and a good time was had by all. Thanks to Grishnak for another fun gameday in Mineola.

Another day of taking candy from babies. My first game was with Grishnak's son, Scott. He fielded a fairly strong army, including Deathreavers and the Krav. The map was the one with road up to towers on the left, with water and a glyph in the center, and a glyph to the far right. I eschewed Marvel and Stompy (see earlier blogs) for this battle, and went with Krav/Raelin/Kozuke/2 x Stingers/Marro Warriors. I was a bit anxious about dealing with the Deathreavers, but, as Scott didn't bring up his Krav until most of the rest of his army was destroyed, . . . The charge of the Kozuke over the mountain on the road was particularly dramatic, and effective, wiping out the Krav.

My second game was with an adult, Jim. This map was Just Passing Through, a map that Chas in particular was eager to play upon. Jim had 2 x Stingers/Q9/Q10. I fielded Tor-Kul-Na/2 x Nagrubs/Airborne Elite/Marro Warriors/Isamu. I dropped on the first turn on the heights on my right. I shot up and grenaded his Qs, killing Q10, and seriously wounding Q9, while his Stingers wiped out my Marro Warriors on the left. Stompy went over and killed his Stingers and took over the Attack +1 glyph. On the right, the glyph turned out to be a pit trap (discovered by a Nagrub), so I sent another to release him (her? it?). Then I used the Nagrubs to attack Q9 and the remaining Stingers at +1 and did a little damage. The game came down to his Q9 with 3 wounds and 1 Stinger against my TKN with 2 wounds on the +1 Attack glyph and my Isamu, who proceeded to kill both of his remaining units.

My third game was a 3-way affair with Scott, 10, and Alex, 15. Alex is very new, with a hodge podge of single common squads (including 1 x Romans) and Me-Burq-Sa. Scott had Zelrig and a mass of 10th. I fielded my strongest army: Captain America/Raelin/Krav/Marro Warriors. Alex and Scott harangued and attacked each other for the whole battle. An hour and a half later, and a headache coming on fast, Grishnak mercifully called time. I was at full strength still, while Scott had a few Deathreavers left, and Alex had only Raelin.

As the winner of 3-way fights is awarded 2 wins, I now have 7 victories and 1 defeat in this series. I have fought well, far from perfectly, but am already assured of a spot in the playoffs. I am embarressed that even my weakest army is so much stronger in my hands than those I face (with the exception of my only loss, to Captain America and 4 x 4th on the first day). I am consoled only by the fact that I have not yet faced Grishnak or C.K.

Do I have anything to prove? This reminds me of a time I was in the dojo facing a weaker opponent (an all too rare event). I was doing my best to avenge vicariously some of the damage done to me in the past when my Sensei asked me if I had anything to prove. Upon reflection, I realized that I did not. It was clear to me who I was, and I had demonstrated a fair sample of my strengths and weaknesses. If I chose to go easy and use my time to teach and work on my weaknesses . . .

In preparing for this series, I anticipated fighting fiercely for a place in the playoffs, and gearing myself up to field a nigh invincable army, while playing a game of total focus and concentration, against an implacable opponent. My perspective was too limited for full enjoyment of this series. All respect to Dok, but in January, when we can change a percentage of our pools, I'm drafting the Ninjas of the Northern Wind. True courage would be un-drafting the Krav.

You have nothing to prove. At one tournament I played against only one person who was older than I am (and I'm not old). I went 4-1 and placed 2nd. When I got home, I ranted here about how I didn't like playing against all of these little kids. I got yelled at, and I moved on.

A few months ago at the Saratoga Slugfest, Kharma hit me. I played against Onacara's eight year old, and I was beaten. The match was fairly close, but he had the advantage from the halfway point and on.

Just because they're young doesn't mean you can't loose to them. Onacara usually finishes pretty high in the standings, but a few events ago Clancambell's son Xanth (who normally goes 1-4 or 0-5) beat pretty badly.

Just because you one against them now doesn't mean anything in the future.

You need to prove that you can build good maps with that very weird collection of terrain you have (and don't have, like any GRASS). So far you've done well, but we'll see tomorrow.

Oh, you mean playing? Nah...

No disrespect taken. You picked a nice mix to win, but if you want a challenge, then NotNW are more likely to deliver that.

You seem to be doing a very nice job of picking the right tool (figures) for each battle.
