Scaper of the Week 36 - Doc_Savage

The latest 'Scaper of the Week is none other than Doc_Savage, who, in my opinion, has one of the coolest screen names on the site. Doc is another one of the "old school" members on the site who doesn't post much anymore, but the effect of his efforts on this site aren't hard to find. Jump on over to the customs thread if you don't believe me. Andyes, Doc dabbles in the custom arena as well. Check out the link in his signature for some of his work. It is quite stellar, to say the least. I present to you, Doc_Savage.

Our 36th Scaper of the Week, Master Custom Creator Extraordinaire:

Doc_Savage

Who are you?
Pete Miller

Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?
Doc Savage - a classic pulp era (1930 - 1945) character and the progenitor of Superman and more. I like the Doc Savage stories, so long ago in the time before 'Scape I chose that name for my on-line username.

Age: 49

Occupation?
Film Mechanic. I have been building and finishing movie trailers for a major studio for 10 years. If you have been to the movies, you have seen my work.

Allegiance and why?
American, because we kick ass. Seriously, I like all the factions, although I tend not to mix Utgar with the others. I am a casual player so we try all kinds of goofy combos and don't really go for the power. I have only played in two tournaments.

When did you get into HeroScape and why? I came across the game in Toys R Us a few months after it came out and searched it out on the internet and found Heroscape.net - the original 'Scape site. The multi-verse aspect of it turned me off, but then the customs started showing up - Annerios' Aliens sealed the deal. If you could do that, I was in. The ease of creating customs sold me on the game system.

Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?
See above, although now I just play. I guess I am customed out. Plus I am out of extra bases...

Favorite Hero and why?
I'll stick with official figures and say Krug. He is just fun.

Favorite Unique Squad and why?
Krav Maga Agents because they are good - and I like agents...

Favorite Common Squad and why?
The Shaolin Monks. I love the Stealth Leap and I love the Shaolin Assault. The maps we make have a lot of elevation and these guys move around great

Favorite Special ability and why?
Krug's Wounded Smash is such a fun mechanic that makes both sides think about their attacks that much more closely.

Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?
I would give the Gorrillanators one more defense. I would not allow large figures to fly through any opening, however small. I would add Grungebob's true flying as an official, optional rule. We get hopping, not good enough. I would eliminate the glyphs - I don't like em, rarely use them.

Any custom special power or ability you would like to see incorporated into official heroscape units?
My Towering Presence power - it keeps big figures big. It is possibly my best addition to the game.

Favorite custom and why?
My Sgt. MacGreggor. He is just fun to play and he is the main character in a story of mine.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
The people that I have met through the game. That's what everyone says, but it's true. I used to be an avid part of the customs threads, but I don't have time to participate in that as much anymore. Now I enjoy the news and the blogs.

Favorite HeroScape moment?
Playing AllSkulls at Comic-Con. He is just a great guy and a fun player.

Favorite So-Cal Tournament moment?
Having my son go 4 - 0. (I went 0 -4)

Any other board games you enjoy and why?
I like Wings of War because of the simple, clever design. I like Tannhauser for the amazing back story and universe. I have done customs for that, too, but those are a LOT harder. They require 8 powers per character and significantly more graphic design. I am also enjoying family games like Wasabi!, Zooloretto, and Ticket to Ride.

Three true things and one lie about yourself:
I have edited over 20 feature films.
My brother is Dennis Miller.
I have been to all 50 states.
My daughter appeared on the Colbert Report and the 2009 Teen Choice Awards.

Other interests?
Writing. I was just published in a book of Green Lama stories published by Cornerstone Books. You can buy it here:

http://www.lulu.com/content/paperbac...me-one/7530115

Volleyball. Music. Pulp Heroes. Blade Runner. SF literature. Adam Carolla's podcasts. Bike Riding. Comic Books. At Comic-Con I collect sketches in a sketch book. It is great fun to talk to the artists that I admire and collect a sketch from them. This year I got a Steranko signature, a Larson Savage Dragon, and many others.

Any Heroscapers members you'd really like to play against?
No, they'd all beat me. I am a hack who likes to create, but can't roll dice to save my life. OK, that's not an answer. I would like to play Annerios because if not for him and Aratak I might never have gotten into the game.

What message do you have for the community?
As my High School Astronomy teacher said, "Do good. Avoid evil." Meaning - it is not enough to just avoid doing evil, being bad, misbehaving and such. You should do good things. It is a great philosophy to live by.

Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week?
My good buddy AllSkulls.

Wow, your 3 true things and 1 lie are tough! I suspect that you've probably editted more than 20 feature films, so I'm guessing number 1.

And if Dennis Miller is your brother - that is too cool!

It says over 20 films...

And for my guess, I'm going to say that you haven't been to all 50 states. I have a totally random feeling that you haven't been to Alaska.

I would like to play Heroscape against Dennis Miller. Or with him as a teammate in 2v2.

While you may have a brother named Dennis...it is not THE Dennis Miller. His brothers name is Jimmy.

"All skulls, baby!"

Very cool interview, Doc! And even to this day, for as long as you've been around, every time I see your username I can't help but sing the chorus to the theme song from the 1975 movie... "Doc Savage! Doc Savage!"

"Who knows what evil lurks..." As we get older, we go back more and more to what we grew up with for recreation, including the pulp fun of our parents! In wargaming cons now I often do pulp adventures, and have been Doc Savage, or even more fun, Ham arguing with Monk! We should all get together for Geezers Con! Here's hoping the John Carter movie next year rocks the house! Now if we could only get a copy of the Ron Ely Doc Savage movie distributed on DVD...

The lie is Dennis Miller.

The others are all true.

I'm just glad Doc didn't shoot me with that blaster for nominating him to answer all of these questions.

Cool interview.
