Scaper of the Week Interview #59

The man in the Viking motif that's well known for his custom works and dice bowl's is this week's Scaper.

He even created yours truly a custom lava set. (Yummy orange cream popsicle!)

Find out the life behind a photographer, web developer, and music lover this week in:

-Scaper of the Week #59 -

Raudulfr Shieldcrusher

Who are you?
Roberto Miguel Armando Esteban Rafael Pagan Rodriguez, but you can call me Bob.

Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?
My avatar is actually a picture of me. At a wedding I was photographing, the DJ had a box of crazy hats and wigs. These were for the guest's amusement. Well, this little boy, maybe 5, had the viking hat on. I wanted to take his photo but he didn't want me to. So I asked him if I wore the hat and he took my photo, could I then take his? He agreed and now I am a Viking!
Since I had this great photo to use as an avatar, I decided my username should be Viking-ish. I Googled a Viking name-generator and this is what it spit out for me. My grandfathers name was Rodulfo, so it seemed a good fit.

Age: 40 (good God, I'm old)

Occupation?
Web Developer(full time), Photographer(part time), Artist(part time)

Allegiance and why?
I end up with a lot of Utgar in my armies, but I really ally myself with Ullar. I've always had a fascination with fantasy themes that involved woodland types. My first custom for Heroscape was a squad of Elven Rangers.

When did you get into HeroScape and why?
I saw a commercial way back when it first came out. I purchased Rise of the Valkyrie as a Christmas gift for my son and we've been playing ever since.

Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?
Simple rules. Long and complex rule sets do not appeal to me. Heroscape has a fairly simple rule set with just enough complexity to keep it interesting.

Favorite Unique Hero and why?
Major Q-10. I like his sculpt and at the cost he fits into lots of army builds. He has great attack options and enough defense to last a while.

Favorite Uncommon Hero and why?
Hydra. With 4 attacks of 4 and 6 defense, he isn't called the "Lawnmower" for nothing!

Favorite Common Hero and why?
Swog Rider. What a great figure for synergy. He helps to makes the orcs a tough army to beat.

Favorite Unique Squad and why?
Krav Maga Agents. With no power creep in Heroscape, since day one, this squad continues to dominate the battlefield. I like how they can fit in with any army and add that all important range factor.

Favorite Common Squad and why?
Aubrien Archers. I love how thematic this squad is. When the 20 sider is on your side, the AA can quickly put a hurtin' on your opponent.

Favorite Special Ability and why?
Chilling Touch. Total game changer and Cyprien can usually get in several chances during the course of a game.

Wyrmling or Elemental Army?
Wyrmlings. I like the synergy they have and flying is always a plus. And I've just not had luck with Elemental armies.

Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?
I would change the Gorillanators special ability Tough to work against special attacks.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
The diversity. There are always lots of interesting opinions and personalities. Heroscapers.com has also helped me to make some new friends that I wouldn't have otherwise. It has also opened the door for other games to land on my kitchen table.

Favorite HeroScape moment:
5-0 at my first tourney. I wish I could do that well now! I've been having a poor showing lately.

Another board game you enjoy and why?
Settlers of Catan. It has about the same level of complexity of Heroscape. I also like the multiplayer aspect. More friends are better! I also made a print-and-play game that is getting a lot of milage at my house, Zombie Plague!

Three true things and one lie about yourself:
1. I have no tattoos.
2. I am a black belt in Goshin Jutsu Kyu JuJo.
3. I was born on an Air Force base in California.
4. I am a former Homecoming King.

Other interests?
I'm a big fan of music. I'll listen to almost anything except country and gangsta rap, buy I prefer Heavy Metal. I'm in a band so I get to feed that interest! \m/ \m/

Five Fun Favorites

Favorite TV Show:
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Favorite Movie Of All Time:
I know it's three but, The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Favorite book:
Ender's Game

Favorite sport:
MMA

Favorite food:
Sushi

Any so-called "celebrities" that you taken pictures of for their special occasion?
Not really. All my clients over the years have been regular folk. And the previous scaper of the week will be next!

How else do you convince small children to take pictures when they're jittery?
Talk to them like normal people. Try to be a little silly. Tone of voice is everything. A big deep voice can be kind of scary, so I try to keep my voice a little higher when talking to kids. In the case of the kid and the Viking hat, just letting him use my camera showed him that he had nothing to be afraid of. When he saw how silly I looked then he wanted to also.

You are very well known for your custom terrain and bowls. Care to share any recent developments?
I'm working on a couple of things. First is a large set of dungeon walls. Second is a mountain set. I have two large mountains that can be used together to create a valley in between, or separate.

What has been the most difficult Heroscape custom you've created?
My dice tower. That thing took forever. The hex shape dice bowls are a close second.

Any Heroscapers member you'd really like to play against?
Grungebob. He seems like a fun cat.

What message do you have for the community?
Don't let Heroscape die. I know new materials help to keep the interest up, but the ease with which you can customize the game can keep it going for a long time.

What Units would you like to see in the next Unit Debate?
Heavy Gruts v. Death Chasers

Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week?
jschild, if you've participated in a debate in the general section, you either love him or hate him!
