The SheapCreaper shook his head at the clamor outside his door. The glyph of Scop was flashing constantly, making it impossible for him to discern the truth of the tales placed before him.

He sighed. The realization was obvious. In order to make his decision, he needed some rest.

Tomorrow...

The time approacheth on wings of black,
I feel our fate shall soon be tried.
Let us hope talent is not what we lack,
But that our tales throughout the land shall be cried.

The SheapCreaper cometh ever closer with gaze of steel,
Bent upon our works, which quiver with fright.

To survive, this most suspenseful night.

The voices around the table died down as the doors opened. The SheapCreaper, appearing quite tired and uninterested in the meal spread before him, remained standing as he addressed the group.
“Before I reveal the true history of the Dumutef Bridge, as presented by one of those present, I would like to take a moment to recognize the importance of what it is we do. As you have doubtless heard, the bridge is no longer there, making the records we possess the only ones in this world. Its significance in the war will not be forgotten.”
There was a silence. Those around the table bowed their heads.
The SheapCreaper looked up. “Now then, about the histories.”

“The Gladiator returned to me with a tale of many things. He even contacted the great hero Drake Alexander to discuss the bridge.” A murmur of appreciation passed around the table. “This story also attributes the bridge to the great fort builder Nathanial, whose work went into the Idona barbican.”
The SheapCreaper cleared his throat. “Unfortunately, however, the record is sporadic at best, and the translation was quite choppy. Crixus was working with several sources when constructing the story around the bridge, and his account of other events in the bridge’s lifetime is to be commended.” He sighed. “Unfortunately, the evidence is scarce. I also find it hard to accept that there is no record of young Nathanial leaving Trillindale until well after the completion of his training there. There also appears to be a discrepancy in the tale; the bridge it describes spans the Upper Bleakwoode River, not the Dumutef River. Perhaps there was a bridge elsewhere; perhaps the story simply got changed over time. Either way, though the tales of the deeds done around and on the bridge will live on, the tale of Nathanial will not feature in the histories.”

The SheapCreaper turned to the Vaultkeeper and Dysole next and addressed them directly. “I have an… interesting concern about both of your stories. It appears from what I have read that the tales contain ‘Dumutefs.’ I know of no such race, and the area was never inhabited by kyrie. The descriptions provided by Dysole, however, lead me to believe that the tellers of your tales were referring to the fiantooth species.” The SheapCreaper’s eyebrows knit. “They came to be known as Dumutef Guards during the battle that took place there. However, as you well know, the fiantooth species is native to Feylund and arrived only after the war began. The fact that two stories make mention of them hundreds of years before their arrival has me puzzled. Perhaps we shall look into it at another time. Until then, I can only assume that their appearance in the stories is the work of more recent authors.”
“Dysole, your tale was genuinely creepy… so much so that I have trouble believing it. For starters, you have ‘Dumutefs’ creating the bridge from haphazard boulders, deliriously. The bridge was no architectural marvel, surely, but it wasn’t not the work of a fiantooth, even on a good day.” The SheapCreaper drew a piece of parchment from his pocket and stared at it. “To calm your concerns about a haunted forest, I should tell you that the skeleton found among the ruins was an eel, nothing more. It was likely scooped from the river with the mud to make the mortar.”
“Though this is likely a tale that grown-ups would tell their children to keep them in at night, it doesn’t seem to hold that ring of truth needed for the histories.”

“Now to address the Vaultkeeper’s tale.” The SheapCreaper inclined his head toward the chroniclers’ founding member. “Fiantooth embellishments aside, your story provides a consistent, if amusing, account of the campaign undertaken by Taelord’s father around this time. It is interesting to note that the Forgotten Forest was given that name after this campaign by Telir himself.”
The SheapCreaper cocked his head. “The question of gnomes, though, is an interesting one. That such a race could stay hidden for millennia- that they escaped the notice of the Valkyrie during the war- is quite a feat. It is also extraordinary that no one from campaign after campaign has any record of these conflicts. I understand that we are looking for lost history, but this tale rings to me as more of a myth than anything.”
There was silence around the table. The SheapCreaper looked around. “This is what we have found so far. The myths of the bridge are spread thin. However, there may be one in this room who can tell us what really happened. One who was there when the bridge was destroyed.” He stared pointedly at Avarius.
“Remember, we are here to learn the truth. We are here to uncover the past and preserve it so that the world may know it. We have no right to conceal this truth, as unpleasant as it might be to hear.”
And so Avarius told the story…

When he had finished, there was silence in Tome Keep. The chroniclers kept to themselves, thinking hard about Landeer’s final warning. It was the kind of revelation none wish to hear.
Silently, the SheapCreaper rose and walked to where Avarius sat. He reached into his robes and pulled out a glinting piece of emerald and copper. He stared at the glyph of Scop for a short moment. Perhaps it would do Avarius good to rest in Tome’s Keep for a while. The hunt for the truth had drained him; the gravity of what he had found was catching up to him.
He sighed, and he placed the glyph of Scop before Avarius. “We can all feel the truth of Avarius’ tale. In a way, I suppose it is fitting that the one among us who watched it fall found the truth of its rise. The information you have provided to Valhalla will prove invaluable in the days ahead.” He inclined his head toward his silent companion. “I bestow upon you my title and the honor of our order.”
He looked to the rest of the chroniclers. “We have a new Master Chronicler; until the glyph of Scop is bestowed again, we will follow his lead… seek his truth.”

So there you have it! Congrats to TheAverageFan; his willingness to toy around with the prompt in a new way (coupled with his almost-4th-wall-breaking mention of bases) have won him the Hunger Games!

Grats TAF. Heh. Totally forgot that they were called Fianteeth and that they were Feylund natives. Even so, as per my usual Fan Fic things, churning things out in one sitting seems to yield all right results for me but I usually don't win unless I actually build it out over the course of a couple days. Thanks for judging SheapCreaper. Oh and in case anyone was curious as to the other source of my inspiration here you go.
