Re: Best To Worst Star Wars Movie By Ranking Individual Chap

Phantom Menace was always at the bottom of my list, until The Last Jedi came along. Plenty of flaws in the final trilogy, but still wondering if it would have been better overall if JJ Abrams had been in charge of all 3.

I agree that the prequels advanced the story much more than the final 3.

I'm pretty adamant about Force Awakens being the actual weak link. While it was probably the best standalone film, it set up way too many weird things that they didn't know how to handle. I think Last Jedi did a great job handling a lot of the pointless stuff that TFA threw at it. Skywalker backtracking has no excuse though.

No matter what, having a concrete plan all the way through is what they were lacking. I don't blame any specific director either. Probably would have been more cohesive is one guy directed them all, but the bottom line is that Disney was supervising and signed off on everything. The Star Wars group just failed because they rushed everything. Skywalker just made all of the previous canon completely pointless, and someone signed off on that. Bizarre.

I see Last Jedi as looking at all those loose ends (agreed, too many) and saying, "Nah. I don't want to follow any of those storylines. I'll just make up my own."

TLJ shouldn't have had to follow those loose ends. They were garbage and would have made for a worse film (In my opinion of course). I loved the twists that it had, definitely still had problems, but TLJ was the most unique of the sequels and actually had a plot that moved forward. At the end of the film things were much different for the characters, while the other two films felt stagnate. Every single character in TLJ had an arc, and grew as characters and people. I like that in storytelling. Skywalker literally had no character growth, unless you call Kylo's redemption growth. And that felt really forced.

I get why people don't like some of the choices in TLJ, I just thought as a story it was much better written and directed. But we're talking about the best of the worst trilogy.

We'll have to agree to disagree about TLJ being the best of a bad trilogy. The fact that it deviated from Episode 7 made it more like someone's idea of a Star Wars story as opposed to the center portion of a larger arc. While flawed, TFA set up a story line that was fairly entertaining and would have been better (though likely not great) had it been followed through and built upon by the next 2 movies. Disney felt they would make a ton of money no matter what dreck was foisted upon the fans.

I am cautiously optimistic about the future of the Star Wars Universe. "The Mandalorian" was very good. I'm hopeful they can follow up with an equally strong second season and get a quality Obi-Wan series out.

Yeah I just have the opposite viewpoint: TFA was boring and derivative and didn't set up anything interesting, and TLJ made the most of it and forged ahead.

Mandalorian was great. The finale of Clone Wars was beautiful. Can't wait for Kenobi!!!!!
