So first off, the returning characters and ideas. I'm kind of torn here. On one hand, after S11 was basically a clean slate, I'm very excited to see so many returning things. But on the other hand, it does feel a bit like we're being thrown member berries. Hey, Spyfall didn't make a ton of sense, but it had the Master in it! I know we keep having to separate the companions from the Doctor to make them work as characters, but look, it's Captain Jack! Remember the Chameleon Arch? Wasn't that a cool thing in like...2007? It's back! It does feel a bit like fan service appeasement at times.

As for last night's big twist...wew lad. So for anyone who hasn't seen it, we're introduced to a new Doctor who was disguised as a normal Earth woman named Ruth. This Doctor has her own TARDIS, and claims to be the definite article. The twist is; she doesn't remember being Thirteen and Thirteen doesn't remember being her, so it's really unclear where this Ruth Doctor fits in the timeline. But some evidence in the episode suggests that she's from before the first destruction of Gallifrey, so before the New Series.

This is where it gets complicated. I'm going to put in another spoiler tag here because I wanna talk about some rumored leaks of what is going to happen later in the series.

So a while back, a user on Gallifrey Base (one of the big DW forums) posted a series of what they alleged to be leaked plot points for S12. Several of those, including Sacha Dhawan playing the Master, have proven to be true. The final and biggest point they posted described a follow up to the "Timeless Child" thread first mentioned in S11. To quote a summary from r/gallifrey;

There are of course other theories going around, but I strongly believe that this theory (that Ruth is a forgotten pre-1st incarnation of the Doctor) is the most accurate based on evidence both from in and out of the show. And...I kind of hate it.

The idea of the Hartnell incarnation not being the first ever Doctor has been played with before. Just ask me to explain the Morbius Doctors or the Cartmel Masterplan and I will. But it's always been something that's kind of on the edges - like slightly more legitimate Fanon. This would be bringing the idea to the forefront and making it an official part of the story.

It just feels really weird. I have always fallen into the camp of not liking the Doctor to be too mythologized. He doesn't need to be the most important person on Gallifrey or in the universe. And it seems like a terrible idea to tack on an "epic" dark past to this character that has always had their past shrouded in a bit of mystery. People are already calling this the Clone Saga of Doctor Who, and I can see why.

There are some holes in the theory. For example, the Ruth Doctor has a Police Box TARDIS, which is something the Doctor only has from the 1st episode of the show forward. So some have theorized that she is an alternate universe Doctor or that she fits into a long-standing theory known as Season 6b. But as much as I like those explanations better (especially the alt universe one), it just seems so much more likely that the "Timeless Child leak is true. And who knows, maybe they'll pull it off. But I'd be lying if I said I was optimistic.

This post deserved a reply. I loved Tenent, liked Smith, tolerated Capaldi but havnt seen any of Whittaker so I don't have much to say.

I agree though that the Doctor should just be a "normal" Gallifreyan who's actions make him special rather than destiny.

By the way didn't that Master kill himself (with no regenerations) in "The Doctor falls"?

Lol, I'm not hurt if nobody replies, I just like to ramble. I am often interested in hearing everyone's opinions around here, cause they tend to deviate pretty majorly from the common consensus on most dedicated DW discussion forums.

For example, a good majority of the "hardcore" fans consider the Capaldi era the second coming of Jesus (Heaven Sent especially is often cited as the best episode of all time) but most normal people I know never really warmed to him.

As for the Master;

2) He's a pre-Missy incarnation. There's some dialogue in the S10 finale that suggests there could be incarnations between the Simms Master and Missy. So Missy could really have been the final Master and died having redeemed herself, and this is just an earlier version.

3) Alternate universe shenanigans. As with the "Ruth" Doctor, there's some speculation that he's an alternate universe Master. I personally don't find it very likely, but I could be totally wrong.

The general vibe I've seen is that a lot of people feel it's too early to bring the character back (The Doctor Falls was only...13 episodes ago, I think?) and that it kinda undermines Missy's emotional ending a bit. But hey, Chibnall is gonna Chib.

That's how I feel about Capaldi. I didn't dislike him just grew bored I guess. I couldn't articulate why though. I can say that i hated the sonic sunglasses (HATED) and didn't quite buy him and Coleman together.

Looked up Heaven Sent. I did like that one but it's not even my fav Capaldi episode yet alone best episode ever.

Fav Capaldi one was the 2 parter (I think) where they are a computer simulation.

I think Capaldi's Doctor, in a lot of ways, was a callback to the Doctors from the Pre-Eccleston era of the show, and Moffat really leaned into making the show a meta-commentary on itself with more deep cut continuity. Great for those "hardcore" fans I mentioned, but doesn't seem like it was as interesting to everybody else. Clara is certainly pretty divisive too.

EDIT: And honestly, I think the roughness of S8 affects a lot of opinions too. While there’s some really good stuff there, it’s also his weakest season (IMO) and wonkiest characterization.

I liked the Sunglasses. Yeah, it's goofy, but it's not like a Sonic Screwdriver was that serious of a concept to begin with. I think it's meant to be a little bit cringey as well, like the fez before it.

Extremis (the computer simulation one) was really good as well. I didn't love the two episodes after it with the Monks though. They were a bit of a let-down after the awesome first part.

I really like Capaldi, but then my favorite before him was Eccleston. I did not care for Smith at all though, so I'm already pretty contrary to popular opinion

My top 4 is probably 8, 12, 11, and 4. 2, 6, 7, and 10 are all basically tied for 5th place though, lol.

Eight has only ever had 2 on-screen appearances (a made-for-tv movie and an online mini episode) but he’s actually had the most stories out of any Doctor through audio, books, and comics.
