Looks good except I wonder why can't cosmos spaces be placed on top of other terrain?

1. So far the only Cosmos spaces we have are on a big, flat space mat and I have no plan of physically producing anything else for this.

2. Space being on top of concrete or lava or water or grass doesn't really make thematic sense to me?

1. If we want to limit it to mats only, let's just say that.
2. If we want people to proxy actual spaces, why not let the cosmos peek through mountains and such?

I'm not understanding, physically, what it would be like for cosmos to peek through mountains, either in real life or on a battlefield.

Do any mountains go up into outer space?

Asteroids can have mountains and they can be quite big (in comics). Not sure why you're limiting cosmic map building.

It's not that, I'm just not following what it is that you're after. Do you have a visual depiction?

OK, imagine a spaceship battlefield, where holes in the ship lead to cosmos spaces. If I'm using castle walls in this map (because I want a big, perhaps multi-level spaceship) it would be a lot easier to build such a breach into space by putting some cosmos spaces on top of those castle walls.

Or imagine a battlefield encompassed only of a single asteroid where holes in the asteroid open straight into the cosmos. Don't we want to be able to do that on any level of the asteroid?

I was with Bats in not seeing the usefulness before, but those examples make sense to me. And in general, if there's no mechanical issues, I don't see the problem with not limiting creativity. Currently, we only have the mat for cosmos spaces, but if someone wanted to paint up some shadow tiles with stars on them and place them on top of grass spaces for some reason, that doesn't bother me in the least.

I was just thinking you would build a map of rock tiles and rock/ice outcrops on top of the space mat for a large asteroid map, but I can see how it would be easier to go the other way if you don't currently own the space mat. Also that Spaceship idea a great one.

Agreed, it sounded nonsensical to me until quozl listed the examples, now I'd be sad if that weren't an option.

The only potential oddity I can see is some Cosmos spaces offering height advantage and some not.

If folks don't see that as problematic, I'm happy to just cut that line.
