Re: Heroscape A Tabletop Equivalent To Video Games?

I especially enjoy the high-definition graphics of the opponents when playing HeroScape.

Re: Heroscape A Tabletop Equivalent To Video Games?

Well, Heroscape certainly does capture the 'ooh, shiny!' element of video games that is a large part of the draw. But I think that the main difference between board games and video games is inherent to the two types of games, and is ironically both a strength and a weakness for both sides.
The great and annoying thing about board games is that they require people. This means that you have to go through the trouble of finding friends in a nearby area with similar recreational interests. Once you find a group, it's a lot more emotionally rewarding than a video game, but in this day and age, where communities are becoming less close-knit due to the increase of numerous technological conveniences, it can be a very rough hoop to jump through.
When you don't feel like going to all that trouble, a video game is always there waiting to pick up the slack and fill your bored empty minutes. it's not exactly as satisfying as real person to person interactive gaming (and no, multiplayer video games are not quite the same thing either), but it does help to keep yourself occupied.
It's up to us, people who grew up in times when video games were less prevalent, to carry the torch to the younger generation and let them know there's ways to have fun besides the ways that are just most immediately convenient. They need to be taught to appreciate both forms of gaming, because both have their ups and downs. If you've got kids, spend time with them, game with them. You won't regret it.
