Do not place Psyche during setup. At the start of the game, choose an active character that is not a Manifestation and does not have Mental Shield or a Tether Marker on its card. Place Psyche's Tether Marker on the chosen character's card. While the Tether Marker is on that card, the chosen character is Psyche's Tether. Give control of Psyche to the player who controls its Tether. That player must place this Psyche in the Astral Plane.

RESTORATIVE BOOST
Psyche has +1 Defense if its Tether has the Telepath keyword or Magical Affinity. If Psyche defeats an enemy Manifestation, remove its Tether Marker from the game.

LINKED CONSCIOUSNESS
Instead of activating its Tether, you may activate Psyche. During this activation and for the rest of the round, it gains its Tether’s abilities and keywords, and its Tether cannot make move or attack actions. If Psyche is defeated, its Tether takes 3 wounds or, if its Tether has multiple figures, 3 of those figures take 1 wound each.

Unit Summary: The Psyches were a distraction for the Fan Four but didn’t hurt their efficiency very much. The temptation to battle back on the Astral Plane was much greater, since the cost was lower, and I liked that. But as a result, it made it harder to pay off bothering with the Astral Plane in the first place, due to the Psychic Projection not being much tougher than the Psyches. Had the Projection taken out its target, this one might’ve gone the other way, but it just wasn’t strong enough and didn’t get much dice luck.

Moondragon gives her Pawns Thing -1 Attack and Martinex +1 Attack. Moondragon tethers the Psychic Projection and the Psyches are tethered to Mister Fantastic and Thing.

Initiative Guardians, thanks to Planar Foresight. Moondragon moves Thing and Human Torch, wanting to delay the Fan Four advance. Martinex has Moondragon go onto the Astral Plane and her Projection attacks Thing’s Psyche, but whiffs. Mister Fantastic’s team advances, while he goes on the Astral Plane, but fails to hit Moondragon’s Projection. Martinex has Moondragon go again and she can’t hit again. Thing advances. Reed’s Psyche hits the Projection for 1 wound. Moondragon’s Projection hits Mister Fantastic’s Psyche for 1 wound. Moondragon’s Projection rolls all skulls but Reed’s Psyche rolls all shields and blocks. Reed’s team advances and he fails to hit Moondragon’s Projection.
Initiative Guardians. Moondragon moves the Fan Four back and apart. Rocket (BFG) and Martinex each hit Human Torch for 1 wound from height disadvantage. Human Torch avoids 2 swipes from Rocket, Flames him on for 2 wounds, then fails to hit with an attack from height. Reed advances. Rocket and Martinex both engage Invisible Woman and but only Martinex can hit her and only for 1 wound. Mister Fantastic advances. He’s too late, though, and Rocket and Martinex both take height on Invisible Woman and finish her off. Torch avoids 2 more swipes from Rocket and Flames On to finish him, then punches Martinex hard from height for 3 wounds. Reed punches Martinex from height as well and finishes him off.
Initiative Guardians. Moondragon pushes the Fan Four back again. She projects and finally gets 1 wound on Mister Fantastic’s Psyche. Thing advances. Mister Fantastic’s Psyche can’t hit the Projection. The Projection can’t hit either. Thing advances. Mister Fantastic’s Psyche hits the Projection for 1 wound. Titanian Technique sends 1 wound back the other way. The Projection gets all skulls but the Psyche gets all shields. Thing and Human Torch advance. Mister Fantastic’s Psyche takes out the Projection and wounds Moondragon.
Initiative Guardians. Moondragon pulls Torch off height. Then she takes height on him and punches him hard, down to 1 Life. Thing double Clobbers Moondragon, taking her out (though taking a Titanian wound in the process). Mister Fantastic advances. Mantis punches out Torch from height. Mister Fantastic and Thing both fail to hit Mantis. Mantis whiffs an attack. Thing and Mister Fantastic take out Mantis.

Unit Summary: The Psychic Projection felt pretty weak in the last game, so I tried it with 4 Life and 4 Attack this game. They definitely felt useful this game, though that was as much about their borrowing Dark Phoenix’s damage dice as about the stat boost. Still, they felt much more viable here and the Projection felt more worth its cost.

Dark Phoenix projects into the Astral Plane and then pulls in the Psyches of Madame Hydra, Crossbones, and some Hydra Agents. Red Skull chooses Crossbones as his servant.

Initiative Dark Phoenix. She projects and her Projection’s Psionic Wave puts 1 wound on Madame Hydra’s Psyche, and then the following attack takes out Madame Hydra’s Psyche, inflicting 3 wounds on Madame Hydra. Red Skull activates Crossbones, who taps into his Psyche’s Brutality, but he can’t hit Dark Phoenix’s Projection. Red Skull advances. Dark Phoenix misses the Psionic Wave roll on Crossbones’ Psyche, but does hit it for 1 wound with an attack. Madame Hydra advances. The Hydra Agents project, but their Psyche can’t hit Dark Phoenix’s Projection. Psionic Wave hits both Psyches and then the Projection finishes Crossbones’ Psyche. Strucker advances. The Hydra Agents can’t hurt Dark Phoenix’s Projection.
Initiative Hydra. Strucker moves up 4 Agents. Red Skull advances. The Hydra Agents hit Phoenix’s Projection for 1 wound but take 1 wound back from Phoenix Fire. Red Skull double attacks Dark Phoenix from range for 1 wound. The Hydra Agents hit the Projection for 2 wounds and Phoenix Fire misses. Dark Phoenix engages Red Skull, fails her Psionic Wave, but blasts him from height for 2 wounds. Strucker fails to hit Dark Phoenix with his Spore and the Hydra Agents fail to finish Dark Phoenix’s Projection. She projects to end the round and destroys the Psyche, psychically defeating 3 Hydra Agents.
Initiative Dark Phoenix. Archangel flies forward and hits Red Skull (defensive whiff) for 2 wounds from range. Red Skull has Crossbones advance, and then punches Archangel for 2 wounds. Archangel fails to slash Red Skull. Dark Phoenix takes a swipe from Red Skull, misses the Phoenix Fire roll, then uses a Psionic Wave that takes out Crossbones and a Hydra Agent but spares Madame Hydra and another Agent. Dark Phoenix can’t finish Madame Hydra with her attack. Strucker fails another Spore roll, this time on Archangel. The Hydra Troopers shoot at Dark Phoenix three times and hit for 1 wound. Dark Phoenix fails on 4 Psionic Wave tries, but does punch a Hydra Agent out. Strucker hits Archangel with a Spore and Hydra Agents hit Dark Phoenix for 2 wounds, but Phoenix Fire takes out 2 Agents and Madame Hydra.
Initiative Hydra. Red Skull catches Archangel whiffing and takes him out. Agents can’t hit Dark Phoenix. Dark Phoenix fails both Psionic Wave rolls against Red Skull and Strucker, then punches a whiffing Strucker for 4 wounds. Strucker and 1 Agent fail to hit Dark Phoenix, but another puts her up to 7 wounds. Phoenix Fire takes out Strucker. Psionic Wave takes out Red Skull. Her attack takes out a Hydra Agent. Psionic Wave finishes the last Agent.

Unit Summary: Godzilla’s strong mind here turned the Astral Plane to his advantage, but it at least felt viable in an Event Hero match up now, which I like. The X-Men still almost pulled it off, so the wounds put on him in the Astral Plane weren’t a total waste.

Initiative Godzilla. He goes to the Astral Plane and uses King of the Monsters to smack Jean’s Projection for 3 wounds. Professor X activates Emma, who projects. Her Psyche hits Godzilla’s for 2 wounds. Neural Jumpstart fails. Jean projects and Telekinesis fails and the Projection fails to finish Godzilla’s Psyche. Godzilla’s Psyche defeats Marvel Girl’s Projection, wounding Marvel Girl. Emma’s Psyche finishes Godzilla’s Psyche, wounding him. Emma’s Psyche is removed. Cyclops advances. Godzilla can’t do anything but reel in pain. Cyclops retrieves the First Aid Kit.
Initiative X-Men. Cyclops brings the First Aid Kit to Jean and heals her 1 wound. Jean advances and tosses Emma next to her. Godzilla advances. Cyclops advances and Jean tosses Prof X forward. Godzilla advances and uses his Atomic Breath but rolls poorly. Prof X blocks and Cyclops takes 1 wound. Jean blasts Godzilla for 1 wound and Cyclops whiffs an attack. Godzilla stomps through Jean and Cyclops, misses both damage dice, then has his attack ended by Prof X.
Initiative X-Men. Emma can’t hit Godzilla, but Marvel Girl throws a car at him for 5 wounds (defensive whiff). Marvel Girl stops Godzilla from moving and Prof X takes 3 wounds from his attack. Cyclops, boosted by Emma, blasts Godzilla for 2 wounds. Marvel Girl avoids a swipe and tosses a car at Godzilla for another wound. Marvel Girl stops Godzilla from moving and Prof X cancels his attack. Cyclops and Marvel Girl blast Godzilla for 1 wound each (he’s down to 6 Life now). Godzilla stomps through Prof X (defeated), Cyclops, and Emma all for wounds, then uses his Atomic Breath and fails to hit anything (measly roll of 1 skull).
Initiative Godzilla. He stomps through Cyclops and Emma, wounding Emma, then he punches Cyclops down to 1 Life. Emma, in diamond form, catches a whiffing Godzilla for 3 wounds. Godzilla is prevented from moving by Marvel Girl, so he stands his ground and destroys Cyclops. Emma can’t hit Godzilla. Godzilla stomps through Emma for her third wound, then punches out Marvel Girl. Emma throws a mail bin at Godzilla but can’t hit.
Initiative Godzilla. He stomps through Emma for 1 wound, then finishes her with his breath.

Unit Summary: The Astral Plane is definitely a scalpel and not a grenade. Maybe if Manhunter had invested in a companion with stronger abilities on the Astral Plane or the dice had just been really hot for him, this would’ve been viable. But with average dice inviting that many Fan Four members to the plane backfired on him hard, showing that the Plane is fairly self-regulating in power.

The prospect of dragging all four Fan Four members into the Astral Plane and trying to solo them with Manhunter seemed too daunting, so instead he pulled in everyone but Invisible Woman, then took Atom along with him.

Initiative Justice League. Martian Manhunter projects, hits Human Torch’s Psyche for 1 wound, then fails to advance any allies. Mister Fantastic, Human Torch, and Thing all project. Human Torch’s Psyche avoids a swipe and then Flames On Manhunter’s Projection for 2 wounds, and also hits Mister Fantastic’s Psyche for 2 wounds (thanks to a Batman boost). Manhunter’s Projection phases to avoid a punch from Human Torch, who instead attacks Atom’s Psyche but is blocked. Thing’s Psyche Clobber’s Atom’s Psyche, which takes out Atom. Mister Fantastic’s Psyche hits Manhunter’s Projection for a third wound. Manhunter’s Projection takes out Human Torch’s Psyche, wounding Torch. Manhunter has Batman move up. Thing and Mister Fantastic both tangle with Manhunter on the Astral Plane but he phases away both times (once with help from Batman). Invisible Woman advances. Manhunter’s Projection tries and fails to take out Mister Fantastic’s Psyche and pays for it when Thing’s Psyche takes him out instead, wounding Manhunter. Thing’s Psyche is restored. Invisible Woman advances again.
Initiative Fan Four. Thing and Reed advance. Manhunter advances and brings up Batman. Human Torch and Reed advance. Manhunter attacks Human Torch from height but can only get in 1 wound, dashing his hopes of finishing Torch off. Batman advances. Reed goes it alone and hits a whiffing Batman for 3 wounds. Manhunter can’t hit Torch. Batman maneuvers around Reed.
Initiative Fan Four despite Batman using two markers to force a reroll. Thing Clobbers Manhunter for 2 wounds despite Manhunter using a marker to swap in more shields, then Manhunter phases away with a Batman boost. Torch blasts Batman and finishes him. Reed can’t hit Manhunter. Manhunter and the Fan Four have a lot of phasing and defending back and forth until their efficiency finally takes him down.

UNIT SUMMARY: I like the changes with their increased viability within a number of match ups, and the Projection being slightly stronger to have at least a little advantage against Psyches. I think things feel very balanced and fair overall and the Astral Plane is a fun addition without feeling overly powerful.
