- Theme Test - Pass - He feels just like Baby Groot to me.
- Mirror Test - Pass
- Bonding Test - Pass - He's weak enough that bonding with theoretically anyone isn't OP.
- Synergies Test - Pass
- Power Check - Pass - I have no concerns about his power level.
- Fun Test - Definite Pass! - He feels just like a little Baby Groot running around, nipping at peoples’ ankles!
- Fun Competitive Test - Pass
- Drafting Test - Pass - I expect this guy will become a staple of Guardians builds just for the extra activation.
- Usage Test - Pass - All his powers were remarkably useful, even Hitching a Ride - there were times when I was glad to have that even with Ragtag Tag-Along. - Strategy Test - Pass - Attempting to keep him safe via TATK is very strategic, as is trying to work around it to take the little blighter out, and so is having to make sure that anyone you want Groot to strike is already engaged with one of your other figures - a couple of times now (at least once) I’ve used Star-Lord’s Distracting Fire to engage an opponent with one of my other figures just so that Groot could strike him!

Round One
The Mutants claim the initiative and Colossus and Armor advance.
Vision flies forwards, carrying Groot and fires a blast from height at Colossus, who tanks the hit, remaining unharmed.
Colossus charges Vision and strikes him with a deadly blow from low ground, inflicting a wound. Armor takes advantage of the road and advances around the side, engaging Groot and Vision but only being able to strike Vision, due to Groot being Too Adorable To Kill. She strikes Vision from low ground, but he phases through her blow.
Vision moves to higher ground and Physically Disrupts Colossus, inflicting a wound. Groot moves to higher ground and strikes Armor from height, taking her completely by surprise and inflicting two wounds.
Colossus repositions to equal height with Vision and strikes him, inflicting a wound. Armor advances and strikes Vision from low ground, failing to harm him but knocking him back two spaces.
Vision moves back up and fails to Physically Disrupt Colossus. Groot strikes Colossus from height, failing to harm him.
Round Two
The Mutants claim the initiative. Colossus punches Vision for two wounds. Armor punches Vision to no avail.
Vision Physically Disrupts Colossus, inflicting three wounds. Groot strikes Colossus, but his Steel Skin keeps him safe.
Armor and Colossus both strike Vision to no avail.
Vision fails to Physically Disrupt Colossus. Groot strikes Colossus to no avail.
Colossus strikes Vision for a wound, leaving him near death. Armor strikes Vision to no avail.
Vision achieves nothing with Physical Disruption. Groot fails to harm Colossus.
Round Three
The Mutants claim the initiaitve and Colossus punches through Vision’s torso, killing him and eliminating the Guardians’ first turn. Armor charges Groot and punches him, but misses, failing to land a single skull. He really is Too Adorable To Kill!
Colossus flattens Groot with a single blow.
Mutants victorious - Colossus 4 wounds, Armor 2 wounds Overview: Groot is... an interesting sidekick. His stats are really low, and yet, I feel he might be due a small price bump, for a variety of reasons:
He can theoretically bond with anyone, including your entire army in some builds (i.e. GotG builds);
Too Adorable To Kill: if he's used carefully, this power can allow him to last tonnes longer than most Sidekicks - characters like Jubilee and Bucky only survive if your opponent considers other targets more important, and can be easily killed if your opponent decides to eliminate them quickly. Groot can ensure that survival strategy works, in most cases, which, when combined with his ability to work with anyone, should hopefully keep him being relevant for a long time, if you play him well; and;
Hitching A Ride, combined with a Range of 2, makes it quite easy to claim height with him a lot of the time.
He does, of course, have weaknesses though. Once an opponent gets past TATK, they can kill him really easily - he has an even wimpier frame than Jubilee or Bucky - and the nature of Ragtag Tag-Along, combined with his own class of Sidekick, makes most other Sidekick bonding combos non-viable in an army containing him. Even so, I'm thinking he's more likely to end up at 85 or 95 than 75.

Round One
The Conquerors claim the initiative. Red Skull advances and moves Solomon forwards with his Cube.
Captain America advances.
Red Skull advances, moving Solomon forwards with the Cube.
Star-Lord advances and opens fire on Red Skull with Distracting Fire. He fails to harm him, but allows Rocket to move up four spaces, carrying Groot with him.
Red Skull advances to height, moves Star-Lord to low ground next to him and strikes him from height, but the Guardian blocks the blow.
Rocket fires a shot at Red Skull from low ground, but fails to harm him. Groot advances and strikes Red Skull from range, to no avail.
Round Two
The Avengers of the Galaxy claim the initiative. Captain America charges Red Skull and attempts to strike him from equal ground, but Penguin pulls strings to keep him from doing so. Groot engages Red Skull and strikes him for a wound, causing him to drop the Cosmic Cube.
Red Skull punches Star-Lord, inflicting a wound. Grundy charges Captain America, hitting him with devastating force, inflicting two wounds and knocking him backwards two spaces.
Star-Lord opens fire on Red Skull with Distracting Fire, allowing Captain America to return to his prior position and allowing himself to back off, carrying Groot with him. Groot moves to equal ground with Red Skull and strikes him from range, failing to harm him.
Red Skull slips away from Captain America, risking and avoiding a leaving engagement attack, to engage and strike Groot from low ground when they’re both engaged with only each other. He strikes the heavily boosted tree for a wound, prompting Solomon to strike Captain America for a wound himself, and causing him to careen backwards into Red Skull, inflicting a wound on each of them.
Morbius flies forwards to engage Grundy, striking him for a wound and knocking him back two spaces. Groot would attempt to strike Red Skull, but Penguin warns him that he has a sniper trained on Rocket, with orders to pull the trigger if he does so - an obvious bluff, but enough to intimidate a child.
Red Skull, desperate, runs for the Cosmic Cube, taking a blow from either Captain America or Groot on the way out - it’s difficult to tell. He picks it up, and uses it to heal himself of a wound and end Captain America’s life, before opening fire on Star-Lord with his Dual Lugers, inflicting a wound.
Round Three
The Guardians claim the initiative. Star-Lord runs forwards and plans to open fire on Red Skull, but Penguin pulls his last string to prevent it.
Red Skull transfers a wound from himself to Groot before charging Star-Lord, punching him for a wound. Grundy charges Morbius, taking a shot from Rocket on the way in - his blow is weak, and fails to harm the living vampire, but knocks him backwards a space.
Morbius charges Solomon and strikes him for a wound, knocking him back two spaces. Baby Groot strikes Red Skull from height, inflicting two wounds and causing him to drop his Cube again.
Red Skull punches Star-Lord, inflicting a wound, and Solomon charges Morbius, inflicting a wound and knocking him backwards, into Star-Lord, knocking Star-Lord out and inflicting a further wound on Morbius.
Rocket rushes forwards and fires his BFG at Grundy, blowing him away. Groot runs towards Rocket.
Thinking Red Skull would be dead by now, Lex flies forwards and blasts Rocket from high ground, inflicting two wounds.
Round Four
The Conquerors claim the initiative. Red Skull, buoyed up by the arrival of his comrade in his arms and sensing an early victory, charges Morbius, but Rocket blows his head off before he is able to act.
Rocket fires his BFG at Orange Lantern - it takes him entirely by surprise as he fails to roll even a single shield and, as such, receives two wounds.
Lex Luthor retaliates, blowing Rocket Raccoon away.
Morbius charges Luthor, striking him for a wound and draining his plasma. Groot also strikes Luthor from range, but to no avail.
Luthor strikes Morbius for a wound.
Morbius strikes Luthor with a deadly blow, but Luthor, fearing death, burns through some of his power supply to deflect it - Morbius receives two wounds, one from the deflection, another from his hunger. Groot tries - and fails - to harm Luthor.
Grundy rises from the grave next to Luthor, and Lex strikes Morbius for a wound.
Round Five
The Guardians claim the initiative, and Morbius flies across to Grundy, striking him from height and inflicting a wound as he knocks him back two spaces. Groot charges Orange Lantern, but fails to harm him.
Grundy charges Morbius and breaks him, leaving Baby Groot all alone on the battlefield and eliminating the Guardians’ next turn.
Luthor finishes Baby Groot off.
Conquerors victorious, Orange Lantern (Lex Luthor) 3 wounds/2 battery markers, Solomon Grundy 3 wounds (resurrected), Penguin unwounded/0 Investment Markers.
Overview: Groot's playing exactly the way I wanted him to - he's a minor little annoyance who keeps nipping at your heels and tying you down, but you can't just crush due to him just being Too Adorable to Kill. Even with the paired boosts from Star-Lord and Cap he didn't feel like too much, but he did have a presence throughout the game and inflict some notable damage on Red Skull over time. (Note that 4 wounds on Red Skull is a tad misleading - he didn't all but kill Red Skull, Red Skull received 7 wounds throughout the game due to shoving a couple onto other figures - another reason for Groot inflicting a lot of that damage was because a lot of the time he was considered a lesser threat and not worth the expenditure of an Investment Marker to keep at bay). I'd be happy with Baby Groot at 85 or 95... possibly 95 to be on the safe side. I'll run one more test before passing him to Public.

Round One
The Guardians claim the initiative and Rocket runs forwards, carrying Groot.
Chronos flies forwards, placing two Temporal Markers on height.
Hawkeye runs forwards and looses two arrows at Chronos, inflicting a wound.
Merlyn runs forwards, steps onto a Glyph of Temporal Displacement and moves Chronos to safety behind a tree. He then looses an arrow at Groot - the only opponent he can see - which fails to be effective.
Hawkeye advances to height and looses two arrows at Merlyn, inflicting two wounds with her second shot.
Piledriver advances.
Round Two
The Guardians claim the initiative and Dredd charges forwards, firing two High-Ex rounds at Piledriver - the first inflicts two wounds and causes the Evergreen Tree he’s next to to collapse on him, inflciting a wound, while the second is harmless.
Piledriver charges Hawkeye and beats her to death with two blows.
Dredd shoots down an Evergreen Tree with an Incendiary Round, causing it to collapse on Piledriver, inflicting another wound and leaving him near death, before firing a High-Ex Round at him to no avail.
Merlyn advances a space and steps on another Temporal Displacement Glyph, placing Piledriver back in reserve. He looses an arrow at Judge Dredd, inflicting a wound.
Dredd shoots down another tree, causing it to fall on Merlyn, inflicting another wound. He then fires a High-Ex Round at Merlyn, killing him and blowing up a tree next to him.
Chronos flies forwards.
Round Three
Crime Central claims the initiative and Piledriver charges Dredd, striking him from low ground. He strikes twice, inflicting four wounds with a deadly assault as Dredd struggles to roll defence dice.
Star-Lord advances and opens fire on Piledriver with Distracting Fire, allowing Dredd to back away and claim height as he himself engages Piledriver, though he fails to harm him. Groot comes up behind Star-Lord and reaches out his little twig arms to strike Piledriver from height and range with an attack of 5, but fails to harm him.
Chronos flies up to Judge Dredd and punches him on the jaw to no avail, before escaping to another time period.
Mantis runs forwards and Groot strikes Piledriver again, failing to harm him.
Tomoe Gozan runs forwards.
Dredd advances slightly and fires two High-Ex rounds at Tomoe, inflicting two wounds.
Round Four
Crime Central claims the initiative. Tomoe Gozan moves to a Glyph of Temporal Displacement and moves Dredd to low ground next to her before laying into him, cutting him to ribbons.
Rocket shoots Piledriver dead, eliminating the Criminals’ next turn.
Star-Lord opens fire on Tomoe Gozan with Distracting Fire, but only one shot proves even remotely effective - it fails to harm her, but at least Mantis advances slightly.
Chronos reappears at the site of one of his Temporal Markers, and flies forwards to punch Star-Lord from low ground, leaving another Marker as he does so. He inflicts two wounds before escaping to another time.
Rocket advances and fires his BFG at Tomoe Gozan, but it proves remarkably ineffective.
Round Five
Crime Central claims the initiative and Tomoe uses one of Chronos’s Temporal Markers to place Rocket on low ground next to her before assaulting him with bladed fans, inflicting two wounds.
Star-Lord picks up Groot and charges Tomoe, opening fire on her with Distracted Fire. He fails to harm her, but allows Rocket to escape. Groot moves to equal height with her and strikes her with a devastating blow which takes her entirely by surprise, and so knocks her out.
Grey Gargoyle flies forwards, moves Groot to low ground with a Temporal Displacement and strikes him, knocking him out.
Rocket, enraged by Groot’s treatment, scurries to height and fires his BFG at Grey Gargoyle, inflicting two wounds.
Trapster runs forwards and fires an ineffectual shot at Rocket.
Rocket shoots Trapster from high ground, inflicting a wound.
Round Six
Crime Central claims the initiative and Grey Gargoyle engaged Star-Lord to move to another of Chronos’s Temporal Markers, before using it to move Star-Lord to low ground and strike him. He inflicts a wound on Star-Lord, turning him to stone.
Rocket fires his BFG at Grey Gargoyle, regardless of the fact that it will catch Star-Lord as well (it is his definition of a rescue, after all...). He inflicts one wound on Star-Lord and two wounds on Grey Gargoyle, who is left near death.
Grey Gargoyle flies across to Chronos’s other Marker and pulls Rocket to low ground next to him. He strikes Rocket, but the Raccoon blocks his blow.
Rocket claws wildly and ineffectually at Trapster.
Chronos appears from one Time Marker and, dropping another, punches Star-Lord from height - the Guardian blocks, and Chronos returns to another time.
Mantis charges Trapster and punches him, but he blocks.
Star-Lord returns to flesh and bone.
Round Seven
The Guardians claim the initiative. Star-Lord runs to height and uses a Temporal Marker to move Grey Gargoyle to low ground away from him. He fires an ineffectual shot at Trapster which allows Rocket to move onto a Glyph of Temporal Displacement and place Grey Gargoyle adjacent to Star-Lord. Star-Lord then fires another shot at Grey Gargoyle, killing him and eliminating the Criminals’ first two turns. He fires a third shot at Trapster, but fails to harm him.
Mantis moves to equal ground with Trapster and punches him for a wound.
Mantis strikes Trapster, who blocks.
Chronos finds both of his Temporal Markers blocked, and cannot yet return to this time.
Round Eight
The Guardians claim the initiative and Rocket shoots Trapster dead, eliminating the Criminals’ first turn.
Mantis charges Kinpin and punches him, inflicting two wounds and removing his OM3.
Kingpin runs around Mantis and punches her with a deadly blow, inflicting two wounds.
Mantis runs around Kingpin and punches him, but the blow is easily blocked. She heals a wound.
Round Nine
The Guardians claim the initiative and Mantis punches Kingpin, inflicting a wound and removing his third Order Marker before healing a wound.
Kingpin runs around Mantis and strikes her to no avail.
Rocket shoots Kingpin, inflicting a wound.
Kingpin risks a leaving engagement attack and charges Rocket, failing to harm him.
Rocket blows Kingpin’s face off. Chronos is left to roam the streets of Medieval Colchester, ruminating on just what the bloody hell went wrong?
Guardians of the Galaxy victorious, Star-Lord 4 wounds, Rocket 2 wounds, Mantis unwounded.
Overview: First off, I would like to dedicate this game to
@Tornado
- that was an outstanding performance from Judge Dredd and I greatly enjoyed playing him. Despite that pasting he took from Piledriver, he was able to really do some damage with his Lawgiver.
Groot wasn't as much a part of this game as the last, and I'm okay with that - he’s not meant to be much more than a Sidekick and filler hero, and he fills his role admirably. His two main attractions are being able to bond with anyone, which is remarkably useful, and the difficulty your opponent will have in targeting him due to Too Adorable To Kill - the extra movement afforded by Hitching a Ride is also rather useful. His weaknesses come in the fact that he’s required to go after someone engaged with a friendly figure (which is actually a major one), and the fact that, if your opponent does manage to tag him and hit him, he drops remarkably quickly, even for a Sidekick - only Jason Todd with Reckless Engagement on is that fragile. all in all, I'd say that 85 was probably a fair cost for him - 95 isn't beyond the realms of possibility, and I'm open to going that high after Public Testing, but I'm happy to send him out to the public at 85.
Thoughts On The Tested Unit's Cost, Balance, & Draftibility:
I think I’ve said everything I have to say - I’m really happy with this guy and, assuming no objections, will propose a vote for Public Playtesting tomorrow morning. I AM GROOT!

He seems to be only whacking people for a couple of wounds here and there per game, which, given all of the antics with moving around, sounds about what a 2-digit figure should be doing. I'd be happy sending into public testing at 75 and seeing what happens from there.

I'm wary going that low, since he can theoretically bond with just about anyone and TATK makes him very hard to target - though if Public Platesting bears out a drop to 75, I'd be very happy as it'd result in him and Rocket coming in at a round 250. I'd like to see at least one test from a Hero or CRB member in favour of that drop before making it, though. For now, I Propose Moving Groot to Public Playtesting at 85 Points!

Would I want it to be everything I love...sure...but that's just not realistic so I'm going to focus on finding things that will make me unhappy and work on fixing those.
