So I probably should have started thinking about armies much, much earlier. I'll definitely sign up though. Any word on whether signups will be extended?

It's a variant - it changes the dynamic a bit (particularly if one of your armies is much better than the other in a certain format). Note that only two of the four rounds use this variant.
