Existentially, Thanos aspires to become an avatar of the cosmic process of life and death. Darkseid is merely a mental fascist who wants to shut down all other minds and subsume them into his own via the Anti-Life Equation. Thus, Thanos, a spiritual guy, although into the apparently negative process of death--which is really for us mortals a positive release into a higher plane---is trying to fuse with the Cosmic Process. Darkseid merely wants to rule the here and now, which is only a small part of the dimensions ruled by the Cosmic Process. Thanos is therefore a higher level being than Darkseid, who could not possibly "beat him in a fight" in any kind of meaningful victory, whatever the terms. On the other hand, at some point Darkseid will die, and Thanos, when he is become Death, will come for him.

I'd just like to mention that although I voted for Thanos, I like Darkseid much more as a character to read about than Thanos, at least in what I've read or seen in animations, which tends to be older stuff. We'll see what the Avengers II movie brings about the Big T.

You've started out with cosmically strong heroes in your first match ups, and I think that I'll be able to get more real in detail about mid level character match ups; so so far I've just tried to be entertaining!

And don't forget low level supporting characters. Wong vs Ubu? Willie Lumpkin vs. The Toad? Aunt Harriet (Batman TV show) vs Aunt May?

And especially The Battle of the Butlers: Jarvis vs Alfred! Hey, I think we've got a potential TV series here...

Big surprise, I'm with Thanos. Not only will he be rejected by Death, but in combat, he will aspire to please Death by sending so powerful a life to her such as Darkseid. He has a higher motive. Darkseid has "Omega Effect" while Thanos has "Cosmic Force," Darkseid has genius while Thanos has genius. They are very evenly matched except Darkseid prefers to avoid fighting and manipulate others to fight for him while Thanos is a master of hand-to-hand combat.

I'd say in sheer physical strength and energy manipulation skills they're on par... but the Omega Beams really tear this matchup in two. Thanos could probably resist them but I doubt he could stop them, and he doesn't have the same "one-hit kill" potential in response. Not to mention the fanatical devotion of Apokolips behind him - Thanos may be tantamount to godhood, but Darkseid is a physical god.

The Infinity Gauntlet would definitely turn things around, but Darkseid takes it otherwise.
